The Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society is hosting a Vintage & Collectible Barn Sale on Saturday, September 6, 2014, from 8:00 am-2:00 pm at the historic Dr. Willella Howe-Waffle House, located at 120 Civic Center Drive West, in Downtown Santa Ana.

They say that they have “cleaned out our attic and carriage barn to bring you some real treasures, as well as that “white elephant” you absolutely must have.” There will be vintage items and collectables, and everything in between, with prices as low as $1. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, CA (August 25, 2014) – The public is invited to attend the City Council Meeting on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 as the Mayor and City Council will recognize the Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society as well as community members who are Pioneers in the City of Santa Ana’s Historical Preservation.

The Santa Ana Historical Society is an all-volunteer, grassroots organization who have been instrumental in the preservation of the Waffle House Museum, the home of Santa Ana’s first female physician, Dr. Willella Howe-Waffle. Time Capsule in Santa Ana

Time Capsule to be sealed in a ceremony on July 12th, 2014 @ 12noon

The Grand Central Art Center is collaborating with the Santa Ana Public Library’s History Room to “bury” a 10-year time capsule on July 12th at 12 pm. The ceremony will take place at Grand Central Art Center, in association with Daniel Tucker’s artists in residence project Future Perfect: Time Capsules in Reagan Country.

Time capsules are like a little treasure chest that we send off for future generations to enjoy. They can help future generations understand questions like: Who lived here? What were they doing? What was important to them?. The time capsule will be buried at the GCAC for 10 years and then replaced with another capsule after it is opened. Continue reading→

The Tri-City (Orange~Santa Ana~Tustin) Memorial Day Observance, co-sponsored by the Orange County Cemetery District, is set for Monday May 26, 2014 at 10:00 am, at 1919 Santa Clara Ave., in Santa Ana.  The event has the theme of “WWI: The War to End All Wars,” marking the 100th Anniversary of World War I.

La Noche de San Patricios

Join El Centro Cultural de Mexico for their 5th Annual San Patricios commemorative and educational event.

They will have Keltic/Irish and Indigenous/Mexican food, folk music from both cultures and a documentary about the San Patricio struggle.

The Saint Patrick’s Battalion (Spanish: Batallón de San Patricio), formed and led by Jon Riley, was a unit of 175 to several hundred immigrants (accounts vary) and expatriates of European descent who fought as part of the Mexican Army against the United States in theMexican–American War of 1846-8. Most of the battalion’s members had deserted or defected from the United States Army.

The Santa Ana Historical Preservation Society invites you explore the proud history of Santa Ana’s firefighters at an Open House at our newest museum addition, the Santa Ana Fire Museum.

Housed in a working fire station, the public can view vintage equipment and memorabilia dating back to the late 1800s, alongside state of the art contemporary fire trucks and equipment. Hands-off the modern items (and don’t be surprised if a call comes in while you are there!) but don’t miss a hands-on experience with the fully restored 1921 Seagrave fire engine and specially designated items along your guided tour. RIP Mayor Bricken

Gordon Bricken

Gordon Bricken, the former Santa Ana mayor who spent more than a decade walking Orange County cemeteries to find graves of former Civil War soldiers, lost his battle with cancer on Monday. He was 76, according to the O.C. Register.

From 1964 to 1974 he served on the Santa Ana Planning Commission where he developed an interest in Santa Ana history. In 1974 Gordon was appointed to the City Council where he served until 1984. He was Mayor from 1981 to 1983 and was instrumental in obtaining the All-American City Award for Santa Ana. Continue reading→

The 2nd Annual Bikes and Bombers event, at the Lyon Air Museum, is set for this Sunday, June 9th 2013, from 10 am to 2 pm.

The event includes exclusive motorcycle parking, complimentary coffee & donuts provided by co-sponsor Triumph/Ducati of Newport Beach, live entertainment featuring The Mark Wood Band, People’s Choice Bike Show sponsored by Danny Gray Hand Crafted motorcycle seats (winner gets to have their photo taken at the controls of the Museum’s B-17 and a gift certificate from Danny Gray), “meet and greet” WWII pilots, food and merchandise vendors.

All motorcycle riders attending this event may enter Lyon Air Museum at the discounted rate of $8.
