Sonia Carvalho Begins Duties in Unique Hybrid City Attorney Role to Save City Money

SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Santa Ana City Council has named Sonia Rubio Carvalho as the city’s first-ever female Hispanic city attorney, hiring her to fill a unique hybrid position aimed at saving the city thousands of dollars in the long-term.

Carvalho will be a contract employee but perform all the duties of an in-house city attorney, which will save the city from paying her health and retirement benefits.

“I am honored to take on this unique role with Santa Ana, and I applaud them for thinking outside of the box and exploring a cost-savings business model,” she said. Continue reading→

New Public Defender Appointed by the Board of Supervisors

(Santa Ana, CA) — The Orange County Board of Supervisors has appointed Frank Ospino to serve as the County’s Public Defender. His appointment to the positionwas effective January 27, 2012.Ospino has served the County as Interim Public Defender since August of 2011. Mike Harrah can start building his One Broadway Plaza Tower now!

“The 4th District Court of Appeal last week reversed an Orange County Superior Court ruling that had put a stop to the construction of One Broadway Plaza, a 37-story office tower in Santa Ana that voters approved in 2005,” according to the Voice of OC.

The  Appellate Court decided that the voters voted for a zoning ordinance, not for a development agreement.  What this means is that developer Mike Harrah can finally start building his One Broadway Plaza tower.   That means over two thousand union construction jobs are on the way. Another anti-employer bill from Solorio, as state unemployment hits 12%

Assemblyman Jose Solorio is at it again.  This time he has proposed a bill, AB 947, that would “cost the California workers’ compensation system an additional $200 to $210 million a year, a legislative fiscal analysis said,” according to the Sacramento Business Journal.

Currently, a California worker can receive payment for a temporary disability caused at work for 104 weeks within a five-year period. Solorio’s AB 947 would allow temporary disability benefits for up to 240 weeks – nearly five years, according to the O.C. Register. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA – A man was sentenced today for sexually assaulting a woman in his Santa Ana home under the pretense of
performing acupressure therapy. Thuan Van Nguyen, 56, Santa Ana, was found guilty by a jury July 13, 2011, of one
misdemeanor count of sexual battery by fraud and two misdemeanor counts of sexual battery. He was sentenced to 180
