There is a lot to love about Santa Ana despite the ongoing gang war

I get a little tired about the constant bashing of Santa Ana. Yes the ongoing gang war sucks but there is still a lot to love about our city, such as:

$3 movies at the MainPlace Mall

When a new movie comes out my kids and I will quickly label it as either a “must-see” or a “$3 movie.” Most films are in the latter category (and a lot of them end up on our Redbox and Netflix list). While I would love it if there was a first run movie theater in Santa Ana I really like being able to go to the Picture Show at the MainPlace Mall to see movies that have been out for a few weeks, if not months, for only $3 (and only $2 on Tuesdays).

I really dislike South Coast Plaza. Who can afford what the stores there have to offer? But the MainPlace Mall is just the ticket with a decent array of stores and anchors and a great food selection that now includes wood-fired pizza at Blaze Pizza and bbq ribs at the new Lucille’s. There is ample parking and two frozen yogurt places – plus my eye doctor. The previous owners of the MainPlace Mall, Westfield, just sold the shopping center to a group of developers. The OCTA responds to Mayor Pulido regarding the pending bus line changes in Santa Ana

The OCTA’s CEO, Darrell Johnson, responded in writing to Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido regarding the Proposed 2016 Bus Service Plan, on January 8. The OCTA is considering getting rid of the bus lines 51, 145, and 76 that serve the people of Santa Ana.

The problem that the OCTA is contending with is that bus ridership has gone down quite a bit. That may be due in part to the large number of immigrants who have left Santa Ana, heading to other cities and states and even returning to Latin America.

Three more shootings reported last night as Santa Ana’s gang war continues unabated

Friday was another bloody day in Santa Ana as yet another shooting took place. This time a man in his 20’s was shot in the face, at the 3300 block of South Bristol St., according to the O.C. Register.

The victim was found at South Bristol St. and and West MacArthur Blvd. He ended up at a local hospital, in serious condition.

The police were not able to find any witnesses to the shooting but several people heard a gunshot and three males were seen running into a light-colored truck and speeding away going north on Bristol. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, Calif. – The Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) convicted four men in October, November, and December 2015 of agreeing to engage in prostitution or loitering with the intent to commit prostitution. The defendants in these cases approached a woman whom they believed to be a prostitute, or loitered in areas known for prostitution and human trafficking in Orange County. Each of the defendants below agreed to engage in prostitution or loitered with the intent to engage in prostitution with a woman and were subsequently arrested by law enforcement.

MOTHER SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE FOR SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES MURDER OF HER TWO CHILDREN AFTER LOSING CUSTODY BATTLE

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A mother was sentenced today to life in state prison without the possibility of parole for the special circumstances murder of her two children after losing custody of them to her former husband. Marilyn Kay Edge, 44, Scottsdale, Ariz., pleaded guilty Dec. 4, 2015, to two felony counts of murder with special circumstance enhancements for committing multiple murders.

On Sept. 11, 2013, Edge lost custody of her two children, 10-year-old Faith E. and 13-year-old Jaelen E., at a family court hearing in Georgia, where her ex-husband lives, following a court ruling. Edge was ordered to submit her children to the Court on Sept. 15, 2013. Continue reading→

Two more shootings reported in Santa Ana since last night

The SAPD is finally acknowledging the increase in shootings, mostly gang-related, in Santa Ana since New Year’s Day. There have been 16 shootings since Jan. 1, according to the O.C. Register. Fortunately only one shooting has proved fatal.

There were two new shootings in the past day. One took place at around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday as two men were arguing outside a home at the 1300 block of West 3rd, near Lydia Romero-Cruz Elementary School, according to a witness who spoke to the police. Continue reading→

Mui La identified as Santa Ana pedestrian who was killed by a vehicle this week

Mui La, of Santa Ana, a 65-year-old woman, was identified Friday as the pedestrian who was struck and killed while crossing a street two days earlier, according to the O.C. Register.

La was crossing the street in an unmarked crosswalk in the 4000 block of West McFadden Avenue, at around 5:30 p.m., when a driver who was headed eastbound struck her. She ended up at a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. Continue reading→

Estranged husband stabbed his wife after divorce filing then fled to Mexico with their son

An unidentified 23-year-old woman was apparently stabbed by her estranged husband Thursday after they argued following her filing for divorce, according to the O.C. Register.

SAPD police officers responded at around 3 p.m. on Thursday after the woman showed up at a local hospital with wounds in her stomach. Continue reading→

Irvine, CA – The Irvine Police Department (IPD) has arrested a suspect for a June 2015 homicide. The suspect is identified as Jacob Michael Margo, 21, of Santa Ana.

On the morning of June 5, 2015, employees arriving to work at a construction site in the area of Wolf Trail and Orchard Hills located a deceased adult male, later identified as 19-year-old Octavio Jesus Alcala of Santa Ana. The Irvine Police showed up in large numbers to make an arrest in Santa Ana this afternoon

The Irvine Police Department showed up in large numbers this afternoon in a Santa Ana neighborhood at W. McFadden Ave. and Parton St., not far from Flower St.

Another shooting reported today at Broadway and Pine, in Santa Ana

One of our readers has reported a shooting today, just after 1 p.m., at Broadway and Pine in Santa Ana. That area is just east of Santa Ana High School. There are several SAPD units there apparently looking for suspects as seen in the picture below.

Another shooting was reported late last night at McFadden and Standard, just west of Kennedy Elementary School. A truck was reportedly hit by the bullets. The media did not report that shooting or the one today at Broadway and Pine.

The New Year is off to a very bloody start in Santa Ana. So far we have posted five articles in 2016 about gang incidents (two of the articles were about the same incident, where a 19-year-old from Garden Grove died after being shot in the head near Centennial Park). Continue reading→
