Santa Ana’s Little Saigon Business District sign is finally going to be restored

Do you remember the brouhaha that broke out more than a decade ago when a sign was erected on Santa Ana’s west side that welcomed drivers to the “Little Saigon Business District?” The Usual Suspects were upset about the sign – calling it divisive and worse. (Ironically these same people are now upset about the proposed DTSA Wellness District).

Well bad news for the Usual Suspects – the Santa Ana City Council has unanimously approved restoring the monument near First Street and Harbor Boulevard that was wrecked by a vehicle in 2008, according to the O.C. Register. Continue reading→

Lou Correa announces his campaign for Congress

U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez announced today that she is going to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Barbara Boxer. It didn’t take long for O.C. politicians to start lining up to run for Sanchez’ seat in the 46th Congressional District.

Former State Senator Lou Correa, who lost to Andrew Do last year when they both ran for the O.C. Board of Supervisors, announced today that he is running to replace Sanchez in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“In response to the overwhelming encouragement of many of my friends and neighbors, many of whom I grew up with, I have decided to run for Congress,” Correa said. Continue reading→

Men stabbed and bitten when a fight broke out at a party at a Santa Ana home

Apparently a group of men were getting their drunk on in the backyard of a home in the 3200 block of South Olive Street, across the street from Douglas MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School, on Wednesday, when a fight broke out, according to the O.C. Register.

The SAPD showed up at the scene at around 2:45 pm, and as one might expect, three men ended up with stab wounds, including cuts to their hands and arms. But there were also bite marks!

The police got help from an O.C. Sheriff’s Department helicopter and chased down a guy who had run off. He was caught almost a mile from the scene, near the 2900 block of Bradford Place. Continue reading→

(May 13, 2015) – Santa Ana Unified School District’s Segerstrom High School will be the host location of the USA Volleyball doubleheader featuring both the U.S. Women’s and Men’s National Teams this Friday, May 15, 2015. Students and their families are invited to attend back-to-back matches beginning with the U.S. Women at 5:30 p.m., followed by the U.S. Men at 7:30 p.m. An autograph session will follow at the conclusion of the men’s match.

Former SAUSD Trustee Nadia Davis is having another baby with her 74-year-old husband

Former SAUSD School Board Trustee Nadia Davis Lockyer survived a brief addiction to meth and a resignation from the Supervisor’s office she was elected to – and has apparently restored her marriage to former State Treasurer Bill Lockyer. Now she has announced a huge surprise on her Facebook page – she is expecting a baby!

Nadia is 43 years old and her husband is 74 years old. They have an 11-year-old son, Diego.

Future is on Track for OC Streetcar Project

SANTA ANA – Transportation, city and community leaders gathered at the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center on Monday afternoon to mark a number milestones toward the construction of Orange County’s first modern streetcar.

The OC Streetcar project, planned to travel through the cities of Santa Ana and Garden Grove, has advanced significantly in recent weeks. Community: Santa Ana Announces First Bike Huts in Orange County

At the start of Bike to Work Week, the City of Santa Ana announced earlier today that it is the first city in Orange County to install integrated modular bike huts. The Santa Ana Bike Huts offer enclosed, secure bike parking where monthly and annual members can store their bikes for the day or for a short duration. Each unit is accessible via a card reader or key code, and is equipped with vertical tracks to support/lock 12 bicycles. They are solar powered, have security lighting, and video surveillance.

Four bike huts have been installed throughout the City – two in Downtown, one in the Civic Center, and one at the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center (SARTC). The bike huts are part the City’s bicycle master plan and overall effort to improve bicycle infrastructure and increase bicycle use throughout the City. Continue reading→

Land swap results in an FPPC fine but no criminal charges for Mayor Pulido

Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido has agreed to pay $13,000 in fines to the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) stemming from a personal land deal with a city contractor, according to the O.C. Register.

The fines stem from a land swap wherein Pulido traded a parking lot next to his brother’s muffler shop to auto parts provider Rupen Akoubian, who runs a NAPA auto parts store located next to the parking lot in question. Akoubian swapped a home in Westminster for the parking lot so he could expand his business. Continue reading→
