Mayor Pulido to meet with city officials to discuss the OC Vector Control District’s spraying plan

SANTA ANA – Mayor Miguel Pulido will be meeting on Monday morning with Santa Ana city officials, including the City Manager, David Cavazos, to discuss the proposed spraying of an insecticide in Santa Ana’s neighborhoods by the Orange County Vector Control District. The intent of the spraying program is to kill mosquitoes so as to reduce the risk of West Nile Virus transmission in Orange County.

Mayor Pulido is concerned about the short public notice about the spraying as the press release announcing the spraying was distributed last Friday and the Vector Control District was planning to start spraying as early as this Monday, September 8, 2014.

The spraying has since been called off temporarily due to unfavorable weather, as disclosed in an updated press release. Continue reading→

Spraying to kill mosquitoes in Santa Ana has been delayed and will not take place this Monday morning, according to Santa Ana’s Trustee on the Orange County Vector Control District, Cecilia Aguinaga. I spoke to her and to the director of the Vector Control District this morning. They explained that they cannot do misting of the insecticide they want to use if there is no wind and the prognosis for Monday calls for very little wind.

I asked them why Santa Ana is being sprayed and not other cities and they explained that our city is apparently a real problem with regard to mosquitoes – but only in a swath of the central part of the city, in four areas outlined in the map above. They also said that eventually the district will spray in other cities as well but that 60% of the problem is here in Santa Ana.

The areas to be sprayed run from Euclid on the West to Tustin Ave. on the East with a cluster of homes ranging from First St. on the North to Warner on the South, in between Harbor and Bristol. The majority of the areas being sprayed are in Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Sal Tinajero’s Ward 6 and Councilman Vince Sarmiento’s Ward 1. Continue reading→

Orange County Vector Control and the City of Santa Ana distributed a press release yesterday about spraying of an insecticide to kill mosquitoes that is taking place only in the City of Santa Ana, starting on Sep. 8 through Sep. 11, 2014. Why was this news sent out so late in the week, on a Friday? And why isn’t Anaheim getting sprayed when they have had 42 West Nile Virus cases while Santa Ana has had 31 such infections reported? And Tustin and Garden Grove have had twice the West Nile Virus fatalities that Santa Ana has had – which is exactly one death. Orange County Sheriff’s Department Operation Aims At Improving Motorcycle Safety

SANTA ANA, California (September 5, 2014) – The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting specialized Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operations on both Saturday, September 6th and Sunday, September 7th in an effort to lower deaths and injuries.

Extra deputies will be on duty patrolling areas frequented by motorcyclists and where motorcycle crashes are more likely to occur. They will be looking for violations made by drivers and riders alike that can lead to motorcycle accidents. Examples are driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, or making illegal turns, which California collision data reveals are the primary causes of motorcycle-involved crashes. Community Alert: ADVANCED WEST NILE VIRUS PREVENTION MEASURES TO BE CONDUCTED IN THE CITY OF SANTA ANA

SANTA ANA, CA (September 5, 2014) – Orange County is currently experiencing the highest level of West Nile virus infection in mosquitoes ever recorded in the county. West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Infection can cause severe illness and permanent disabilities, and in rare cases, can result in death.

Despite collaborative efforts with the Orange County Vector Control District to reduce mosquito-breeding sources, expand education to residents, conduct aerial surveillance for out-of-service swimming pools, and intensifying immature mosquito control, the rate of infection in both mosquitoes and birds remains abnormally high. SANTA ANA, CA – As part of the Cal Humanities War Comes Home: Finding Peace at the Home Front series, the Santa Ana Public Library will have the following free events during the month of September introducing challenges faced by veterans and the realities of war.

Saturday, September 13, 2014, the library will be screening When I Came Home, winner of the NY Loves Film Best Documentary Award at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. When I Came Home follows Herold Noel, an Iraq war veteran who becomes homeless in New York City after returning from combat with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). After the screening there will be presentations by representatives from the Volunteers of America and US Department of Veterans Affairs. The OCDA slaps down the Santa Ana City Council and the City Attorney

The Orange County District Attorney’s office slapped down the Santa Ana City Council and the Santa Ana City Attorney today after the City Council threatened to out a confidential report on their investigation into a real estate deal between Mayor Miguel Pulido and a city contractor, according to the Voice of OC.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Michael Lubinski outlined the DA’s position in a letter sent today to City Attorney Sonia Carvalho. Lubinski claims Carvalho backtracked on her own confidentiality request regarding the city’s report, which was referred to the DA’s office over six months ago.

“I do not understand your change of position,” Lubinski writes. “The disclosure of confidential reports is premature and should not be released until our investigation has concluded to ensure justice.” Continue reading→

(Santa Ana) The 5th Annual OC Film Fiesta opens Thurs., Sept. 18 at 7 pm at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana with a free screening of Volando Bajo, acclaimed Mexican director Beto Gomez’s hilarious homage to musica romantica of the 1980s. MAN CONVICTED OF STABBING TWO MOVIE THEATER PATRONS DURING THE SHOWING OF HORROR FILM

*Defendant was previously sentenced to 22 years in state prison but the sentence was vacated during appeals

FULLERTON – An Anaheim man was convicted today of stabbing two movie theater patrons, whom he did not know, during the showing of a horror movie at a theater in Fullerton. Steven Walter Robinson Jr., 30, was found guilty by a jury today of two felony counts of attempted murder with premeditation and deliberation and sentencing enhancements for the personal use of a deadly weapon and causing great bodily injury.

On Sept. 29, 2009, Robinson was convicted by a jury of the charges listed above and two felony counts of mayhem. On Dec. 11, 2009, Robinson was sentenced to 22 years to life in state prison in this case. On Jan. 14, 2011, the Court of Appeal vacated Robinson’s sentence and overturned his conviction on the attempted murder charges and sentencing enhancements based on an instructional error by the judge during juror deliberations. Robinson faces a maximum sentence of 22 years to life in state prison at his sentencing on Nov. 14, 2014, at 9:00 a.m. in Department N-13, North Justice Center, Fullerton. Continue reading→

Register Now For the 5th Annual AlertOC Regional Test

SANTA ANA, Calif. – (September 3, 2014) – On September 23, 2014 over two million Orange County residents will receive a call to test AlertOC. This is the fifth annual regional test of the system and will include 25 participating cities and the County’s unincorporated areas.

Residents are encouraged to self-register their email addresses, cell phone numbers and other alternate numbers to be a part of the regional test. The key feature of AlertOC is the ability for residents to register more than one contact method at a specific address. Registrations of cell phone and alternate numbers increase the potential of reaching the greatest number of community members as rapidly as possible.
