Rumor has it that longtime SAUSD School Board Member Audrey Yamagata-Noji is finally going to retire this year. That means her seat will open up this November. The other incumbent who is up for re-election is John Palacio.

Cecilia Aguinaga has already started campaigning. I heard today that Valerie Amezcua, who like Aguinaga has run unsuccessfully before for the SAUSD School Board, will also be in the race. And local businessman Mike Dalati appears to also be running in what is quickly turning into a crowded race. Continue reading→

Confirmed Measles Activity in Orange County Underscores the Importance of Childhood Vaccination

(Santa Ana) – The Orange County Health Care Agency has confirmed three cases of measles in Orange County in the last six weeks. These cases are unrelated and thus far have not resulted in transmission to other Orange County residents. In the last five years, Orange County has only seen zero to one case of the measles per year. The Orange County Health Care Agency reminds people that the way to protect yourself and your family against the measles is to get the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. Continue reading→

Community Alert: City of Santa Ana Scheduled to Host a Community Graffiti Clean-up/Education Day

SANTA ANA, CA (February 6, 2014) – In promoting the City’s graffiti abatement efforts, Santa Ana Public Works in collaboration with residents, community volunteers/ organizations, and city contracted graffiti removal crews will host a Community Graffiti Clean-up and Education Day. Graffiti Protective Coatings will provide materials and supplies for the graffiti abatement. Coffee and donuts will also be given along with T-shirts for the first 100 volunteers who pre-register. The graffiti clean-up day will begin at Carl Thornton Park’s, Kiwanis Barrier Free Park Amphitheatre and will proceed throughout the park and various surrounding neighborhoods. Continue reading→

Why was the trial of Kim Pham’s alleged murderers moved to Westminster?

I am trying to figure out why the trial of Vanesa Tapia Zavala, 25, and Candace Marie Brito, 27, who have both been charged with the brutal murder of 23-year old Chapman grad and writer Kim Pham, was moved from the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana, to Newport Beach and then, late Monday, it was assigned to West Court, in Westminster, according to the O.C. Register.

As I understand it prospective jurors will be drawn from a Countywide pool, but moving the trial into, essentially, Little Saigon, and out of Downtown Santa Ana, sure looks like a big favor to Santa Ana’s City Council – and to the gentrifiers/hipsters in DTSA. The trial is going to be a media circus and holding it in Santa Ana would have been a daily reminder of how dangerous DTSA can be, for some. Continue reading→

The Orange County Young Executives Future Leader’s Scholarship is now accepting applications. This scholarship is open to high school seniors who aspire to obtain higher education and make a difference within their community. The scholarship is generally aimed toward high-achieving students who also demonstrate continued involvement within the surrounding community.

The award value is a minimum of $3,000, which may increase depending on ticket sales for OCYE events, and will be given to a select student at our March 14th charity gala, benefitting THINK Together – an after school program. Continue reading→

MAN CONVICTED OF KILLING PEDESTRIAN IN HIT-AND-RUN CRASH

SANTA ANA – A man was convicted today of killing a pedestrian by crashing into the victim with his car and then fleeing the scene. Victor Manuel Arredondo Anaya, 28, Santa Ana, was found guilty by a jury today of one felony count of hit and run causing death and one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence. He faces a maximum sentence of four years in state prison at his sentencing March 28, 2014, at 8:30 a.m. in Department C-38, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana. Continue reading→

Community Alert: Selection Process for Public Art Sculpture to Honor the History of Local Japanese-American Farming Community Launched

SANTA ANA, CA (February 4, 2014) – A competitive grant awarded from the state to build a bike trail with landscape and hardscape improvements on the last half-mile of Flower Street in Santa Ana’s southeast section has $80,000 budgeted for a sculpture. This public art will be newly created and placed on the trailhead, which unites Santa Ana’s new bike trail with Costa Mesa’s Bike Lane on Sunflower Avenue. The sculpture will be a memorial to the Japanese-American farming community that was very active for several generations in this section of the City.
