1st and 2nd District Bikeways Collaborative

The 1st and 2nd District Bikeways Collaborative is a coordinated planning effort led by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) involving many agencies including the County of Orange, Caltrans, and the cities of Buena Park, Cypress, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Newport Beach, Santa Ana, Stanton, and Westminster. One of the primary objectives of this effort is to build consensus on regional bikeway corridors and to help position local jurisdictions for funding opportunities.

The results of this effort will be documented in the Districts 1 & 2 Bikeways Strategy, which will identify a set of regional bikeway corridors that connect major activity areas such as employment centers, transit stations, colleges, and universities. The Bikeways Strategy will also provide an implementation toolbox of bikeway treatments and enhancements, as well as information on bikeways funding resources. Continue reading→

County Supervisors whack Latino Health Access’ funding

“Orange County officials have decided not to renew an exclusive contract with Latino Health Access (LHA) to provide promotores services throughout the county, opting instead to divvy up the approximately $500,000 contract among several community organizations,” according to the Voice of OC.

America Bracho, President and CEO of LHA, says that the county’s decision is political payback.  That is of course complete B.S.  But in reality this is just desserts for Ms. Bracho, who originally hails from Venezuela, where she claims she was a rural doctor, though my sources say she does not have a medical degree.  She has however since earned a Master’s Degree in Public Health. A forum for Santa Ana mayoral candidates is set for 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 at Latino Health Access, 450 W. Fourth St., according to the O.C. Register.

The forum, sponsored by Voice of OC, the non-profit health agency and other groups, will focus on youth issues.

The event date will be Saturday the 19th of May, 2012 from 9am- 2pm. Over the past 6 years this event has become a celebration for local Community members, Organizations and leaders to establish the importance of being active, having fun, while endorsing the “I Work Out!” initiative, “Get Fit– Get Healthy!” This initiative has been introduced by netz 4 Life along with their “Leave No Rim Netless” Campaign and “Reaching Out- One Neighborhood at a Time” to inspire at-risk youth to become active leaders within their own community and continue to dream and believe that they too can make a difference. Latino Health Access planning a Wellness Corridor in Downtown Santa Ana

Latino Health Access (LHA), one of Santa Ana’s most successful non-profits, mission is to assist in improving the quality of life and health of the most marginalized members of the community. Since 1993, LHA has provided quality preventive services and educational programs that enable such individuals to take responsibility and fully participate in decisions affecting their health. LHA has been highly effective in reducing health disparities among Orange County’s severely under-served, underinsured Latino community. Now, LHA is embarking in a new endeavor, promoting the creation of a Wellness Corridor in Central Santa Ana.

The Wellness Corridor is a project that Council Member Michele Martinez fully support as it addresses the health issues of Central Santa Ana’s residents by encouraging active lifestyles, healthy eating options, engages residents and businesses—adding resources for all while building community. The Wellness Corridor will promote active healthier living by using non-traditional open spaces to create urban fitness walking and biking routes with supporting amenities and exercise stations which will be located at the organization’s park currently under development and scheduled for completion summer of 2012. The OC Supervisors go nuts over a Spanish word

The letter below was delivered to the  County Board of Supervisors by Jamie Ross, Deputy Clerk to the Board by Rob Richardson, Assistant Chief Executive Officer – prior to this morning’s Board meeting, on behalf of Zeke Hernandez, the President of the Santa Ana LULAC Council #147, regarding apparently racist comments made by most of the O.C. Supervisors at a recent board meeting.

The OC Weekly, by the way, fingered Supervisor Janet Nguyen as well:

Okay, so Janet Nguyen is REALLY stupid–I mean, stupider than what we already knew. Unlike the other supervisors, she knows exactly what Latino Health Access is about–she received an award from them a couple of years ago, according to sources who requested anonymity. In addition, Nguyen was present at a LHA community fair highlighted in Bill Moyers’ Journal back in 2009 where LHA head America Bracho specifically said her organization, while obviously concerned about Latinos in SanTana, helps ALL. Nguyen can’t excuse playing the dumb innocent in this story, although it’s hardly hard for her to do so.

Chairman Campbell and County Supervisors ,

On behalf of our general membership, I strongly urge the Board of Supervisors to call upon fellow Supervisors John Moorlach and Shawn Nelson to apologize for their comments that were meant to belittle the great work Latino Health Access has accomplished over the past 18 years in Orange County .

That Supervisor John Moorlach stopped a very normal process because he did not like the use of the word promotora in the language of the mental health outreach agreement. Clearly Supervisor Moorlach this time has stooped so low as to suggest the county to “hold up” critical services to persons who are in need of these mental health services by suggesting a non-English word should be removed for an English word.

Of course this was uncalled for – but then for Supervisor Shawn Nelson to be so up-front with his statement that he would lean towards what many would say is a blatant attempt to get the message across, that is, change your name or you wouldn’t get my vote. Santa Ana LULAC is now asking, “How many Latinos and Latinas did Shawn Nelson ask to support and vote for him as Orange County Supervisor? The answer is plenty, because he had two Latinas as opponents in pursuit of the same elected position.

While we recognize that it can be difficult to serve as a public servant, we urge You Chairman Campbell to assist our community to quickly mend things in the best way possible. Santa Ana LULAC recognizes your great leadership as Chairman and that you will be taking steps to have the full Board recognize that this incident should have been avoided.

The motto and rallying cry of Latino Health Access is, “We will have a healthier community, even if we have to sell tamales.” This phrase is derived from a common Mexican proverb. It means that in the face of adversity, people can call upon their talents to overcome obstacles and accomplish something extraordinary.

We adopted the saying when a patient from our diabetes class became partially blind. Although unable to afford the $5,000 eye surgery to save his vision, he refused to give up. He would have that surgery, even if he had to sell tamales. He was the inspiration for the first Tamalada.

On December 10, 2010 we invite you to join us for a delicious tamale dinner the proceeds of which will support our Diabetes Self-Management Program. This is an activity for the entire family. You will have the opportinity to make your very own tamales, take a commemorative photo and then enjoy live entertainment.

Santa Ana receives $7.9 million for new parks, from a state fund

California’s voters created a fund, in 2006, to support water-quality improvements, conservation, pollution-control efforts and parks, according to the O.C. Register.

Yesterday the first grant recipients were announced – and Santa Ana struck gold.

The city of Santa Ana won $4.4 million to replace the grass fields at Willard Intermediate School with tougher synthetic turf and a rubberized track. The project also includes a playground, outdoor exercise equipment and restrooms.

Latino Health Access received more than $3.5 million for a second park project in Santa Ana. It plans to build a community center, playground, open space and half basketball court on an empty lot near downtown, located at 602 E. 4th St.

Kudos to Santa Ana Parks and Recreation Director Gerardo Mouet and to Assemblyman Jose Solorio, State Senator Lou Correa, and Mayor Miguel Pulido and our City Council for making this happen!

Senator Correa Works Collaboratively to Secure Prop. 84 Funding for Willard intermediate, Latino Health Access

(SANTA ANA, CA) – Willard Intermediate School and Latino Health Access of Santa Ana received a combined $9 million dollars through California’s Proposition 84 funding allocation process. Willard Elementary School will be using the funds to transform the area by addressing playground and athletic field reconstruction, while Latino Health Access will build a new urban park in central Santa Ana.

“I am thrilled that Willard Intermediate and Latino Health Access have been awarded these Prop. 84 funds. These Prop. 84 grants will serve to enhance the quality of life in Central Orange County, by adding park space and by promoting the joint use of Willard intermediary, by the school district and the City of Santa Ana.” said Senator Correa.

“This kind of success only happens when everyone works together. Our success today will serve as a good model for the creation of more park space and more accessible open space. The effort to secure such funds started years ago. Since then, our efforts have not ceased to assure that such grants became a reality,” Said Senator Correa.

Proposition 84 is a $5.38 billion infrastructure bond to be invested in projects such as water quality, forest and wildlife conservation, and sustainable communities. Over 400 applications were submitted requesting funding, and only 60 were approved, two of which are in Santa Ana.

Willard Intermediate School is one of Santa Ana’s priority schools in a highly populated area, with an enrollment of nearly 1,000 students. Latino Health Access is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting the health needs of Latinos in Orange County. This bond money will help both organizations better assist the people and communities they serve.

Senator Lou Correa represents the 34th District, which includes the cities of Anaheim, Buena Park, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Stanton and Westminster.
