Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido’s wife, Laura Saari, is an accomplished freelance writer, and her latest article should be of interest to our readers.  Saari has written an article about Dia de los Muertos, in Orange Coast Magazine.  Here are a few excerpts from her article:

Halloween in Orange County is all about the drama: too much Disney with cleavage, too many Glinda the Good Witches, too much rented imagination. Needing respite—and recovering from a party that found me dancing with three gay guys in burqas—I headed to the Santa Ana Artists Village.

It was about 10 p.m. during the First Saturday Artwalk, but as I turned the corner onto the Second Street Promenade, High Mass rose up to meet me. Hundreds of flickering candles lighted the old brick street outside the Grand Central Art Center. Frankincense choked the air. Everyone seemed to be murmuring. The street was quiet, everyone reverent. An art installation, I thought. Then I saw a few skeletons on a display, and it finally clicked: I’d just stumbled into my first Day of the Dead. Easter Seals Walk with Me

Once again, the Santa Ana Zoo is the location for the annual “Walk With Me” Easter Seals event, benefitting those living with disabilities, and their families.

It’s a 3K/5K walk throughout the Zoo with lots of activities, for the walkers and the honorary Easter Seals ambassadors that will be there.

This is a great event for a worthy cause.

Free ham radio class for Santa Ana CERT members

Here is an announcement from the Santa Ana Fire Department, regarding their CERT (Community Emergency Response Team ) program.  This is a great FREE program that trains residents to help out in big emergencies, such as earthquakes.  This announcement regards a new program to train CERT programs to become Ham Radio operators.

Santa Ana CERT members :

The Ham Radio Service plays an important part in disaster communications . When cellular systems overload , Ham Radio is ON THE AIR .

Calacas Calls for Entry

“El Centro Cultural de Mexico and Calacas are seeking those interested in creating altars for the annual Noche de Altares, a free community event organized by local volunteers,” according to the O.C. Register.

El Centro Cultural de México & Son del Centro Present: Bombazo-Fandango, A night of Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba and Son Jarocho, on Saturday, September 26, 2009, from 6:00pm to Midnight.

The event will take place at the Fiesta Marketplace, located at 300 E 4th Street, Santa Ana, located near the intersection of 3rd Street and Bush Street.

The event includes Bomba Dancing Workshop and Zapateado Workshop, from 6pm-8pm, and Bombazo-Fandango, from 8pm-Midnight.

Santa Ana’s El Centro Cultural De Mexico presents David Lida, author of the book “First Stop in the New World” Mexico city, The capital of the 21st Century,” on Sep. 25, at 7 p.m.

“First Stop in the New World,” is a street-level panorama of Mexico City, the cultural capital of the Spanish-speaking world.

The book discusses the substantive issues facing Mexico City’s residents today by letting these residents tell their own stories of everyday struggles and triumphs. He takes us into resilient working-class neighborhoods, sprawling open-air markets, welcoming cantinas and boisterous lucha libre theaters, capturing the city’s addictive raw energy. The City of Santa Ana is presenting the  Youth Expo 09, Sunday, October 11. The event will take place from 11a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Centennial Park , Admission is FREE!

Santa Ana High School trying to replace war memorial plaques

Santa Ana High School War Memorial Plaques

“It has been almost a year since thieves broke the locks at Santa Ana High School and tore from the walls several plaques that honored the school’s war dead, apparently to sell as scrap,” according to the O.C. Register.

The good news is that  “School officials and alumni have begun raising the thousands of dollars they expect it will cost to replace the plaques. They want to have at least a few re-cast by the end of the year, maybe those that paid tribute to the former students who died in the two world wars.”

Santa Ana High School needs our help to raise the $8K to replace the plaques. Continue reading→

Local MMA training center to hold Casino Night at the Green Parrot

“El Nino Training Center, LLC is sponsoring a Casino Night on Friday, Oct. 9 at the Green Parrot Villa, 2035 N. Main St.,” according to the O.C. Register.

The event features games, an appearance by MMA Star Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez, $1 tacos and no host bar.

$25 gets you 100 chips, and 100 chips earns a raffle ticket. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., card play is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and the raffle is at 9:30 p.m. Continue reading→
