The Great Park Presents “Community Safety Expo”
Event offers fun, free activities and safety tips for the whole family
IRVINE – Orange County’s finest public safety officers will be joined by Smokey Bear, Urban Search and Rescue dogs, and advanced fire and police vehicles at the Great Park on March 26 as part of the Park’s first Community Safety Expo. This free event will have safety demonstrations and activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to show you how to protect yourself, your family and your neighborhood.
“The Community Safety Expo offers the opportunity for Park visitors to learn from experts how to keep themselves and their families safe,” said Beth Krom, Chair of the Orange County Great Park Corporation. “We are proud to partner with the Orange County Fire Authority and the Irvine Police Department to provide this important information in an interactive and fun way.”
Kids are invited to bring their bikes to the Park to participate in a bicycle obstacle course and receive a free bike inspection. Parents can learn how to keep their kids safe from predators on the internet and see a live cooking fire safety demonstration. The event will conclude with demonstrations by the Irvine Police Department K-9 Unit and the Orange County Fire Authority Urban Search and Rescue Dog Team.
Kids can meet police officers and fire fighters, and see real emergency vehicles up close. Visitors will also be able to meet the K9 officers, and gourmet food trucks will be available throughout the event. A full schedule of events is available online at www.ocgp.org. The Orange County Great Park is located off the 5 or 405 freeways at Sand Canyon and Marine Way in Irvine.
About the Great Park
The Orange County Great Park, with its 1,347-acre master plan, is the focal point of the redevelopment of the publicly-owned portion of the 4,700-acre former Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro. The Great Park is currently 27.5 acres and includes an iconic tethered helium balloon that rises 400 feet in the air, providing an aerial view of Park development. A $70 million development plan to expand the Park to more than 200 acres is currently underway. The plan will build out a core section of the Park for the most immediate and wide-ranging public benefit, including the initial components of the sports park, a 114-acre agricultural area, and an art and culture exhibition space. Assemblyman Solorio Honors Advocate for Girls at Woman of the Year Ceremony
Lucy Santana-Ornelas, Executive Director for Girls Inc., receives award on Assembly floor
SACRAMENTO – State Assemblyman Jose Solorio’s (D-Anaheim) choice for the Sixty-Ninth Assembly District’s Woman of the Year is Executive Director for Girls Inc. Orange County, Lucy Santana-Ornelas. She traveled to Sacramento today to receive the honor at a recognition ceremony held on the Assembly floor.
“Lucy has dedicated her heart, soul, time and talent to the girls and young women in our community,” says Solorio. “She exemplifies the mission of her organization, ‘inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold.’”
Born in Santa Ana, Lucy Santana-Ornelas is a graduate of Santa Ana High School, Santa Ana College and obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). Santana-Ornelas frequently tells her story of overcoming the advice of a high school counselor who told her to not bother pursuing college. Thankfully, she didn’t listen. In 2008, she was highlighted as one of 50 distinguished Latino graduates of CSUF at the university’s 50th Anniversary.
Santana-Ornelas’s entire career and adult life have been spent in public service. She has an extensive awareness of Orange County community issues and needs and is passionate about creating opportunities for underserved youth, especially girls age 4-1/2 to 18.
“We are seeing girls experience low self-esteem and body image issues at a younger age than ever before,” Santana-Ornelas says. “Girls Inc. can help break the barriers to success for those girls by providing girl-focused programs, adult role models and exposure to the world beyond their neighborhoods.”
Santana-Ornelas is particularly proud of integrated projects that increase girls’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and math by involving students in solving authentic problems, working with others, and building real solutions. Last year, Girls Inc. served 4,700 girls in Orange County. In an age of shrinking social services, Girls Inc.’s budget is projected to grow from $1.7 million to $ 2.5 million.
“We are so fortunate that our funding has increased during these tough economic times. Our proven success in helping girls achieve their potential and the recognition of the growing need for our services are huge factors in our growth,” says Santana-Ornelas. The agency is scheduled to serve over 54 outreach program locations this year. Girls Inc. is funded mainly by public/private foundation grants, corporate giving and individual donations.
“This honor is the California Assembly’s way of saying thank you for your dedication,” said Solorio. “And thank you for changing the lives of thousands of Orange County’s young women.”

Today is the birthday of one of Mexico’s great presidents. An important statesman and liberal reformer, Benito Juarez was the first and only full-blooded indigenous leader to serve as president of Mexico. Born in 1806 in the village of Guelatao, Oaxaca, he studied for the priesthood before choosing to pursue a career in law. He was elected governor of Oaxaca in 1847 and later served as president of Mexico from 1858 until his death in 1872.
Widely quoted for his saying “Entre los individuos, como entre las naciones, el respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz,” (Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace), Juarez’ legacy includes the separation of church and state, and free and obligatory education.
Benito Juarez’ birthday is a national public holiday in Mexico.
Today Benito Juárez is remembered as being a progressive reformer dedicated to democracy, equal rights for his nation’s indigenous peoples, lessening the great power that the Roman Catholic Church then held over Mexican politics, and the defence of national sovereignty. The period of his leadership is known in Mexican history as La Reforma (the reform), and constituted a liberal political and social revolution with major institutional consequences: the expropriation of church lands, bringing the army under civilian control, liquidation of peasant communal land holdings, the separation of church and state in public affairs, and also led to the almost-complete disenfranchisement of bishops, priests, nuns and lay brothers.
La Reforma represented the triumph of Mexico’s liberal, federalist, anti-clerical, and pro-capitalist forces over the conservative, centralist, corporatist, and theocratic elements that sought to reconstitute a locally-run version of the old colonial system. It replaced a semi-feudal social system with a more market-driven one, but following Juárez’s death, the lack of adequate democratic and institutional stability soon led to a return to centralized autocracy and economic exploitation under the regime of Porfirio Díaz. The Porfiriato (Porfirist era), in turn, collapsed at the beginning of the Mexican Revolution.
