I received a tip this week that forces allied with Orange Clerk-Recorder Tom Daly are looking for pictures of one of his Democratic opponents for the 69th Assembly District, Julio Perez, a labor consultant.
What sort of pictures? They want pictures of Perez riding a car in the Santa Ana parade. Not just any car – it was a car that was entered in the parade by the Institute for Mexicans Living Abroad, of which Perez is an elected board member (OC Weekly). Continue reading

OCTA and Caltrans announce a Public Scoping Meeting for the Proposed Improvements to I-5 from SR-55 to SR-57
OCTA invites the public to attend on Nov. 2, 2011 from 6 to 8p.m.
The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is proposing to relieve traffic congestion, eliminate bottlenecks, and improve traffic operations on Interstate 5 from State Route-55 to State Route-57 in the city of Santa Ana in Orange County.
The project alternatives being studied will include, but not be limited to, adding one HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lane in each direction, ramp realignments, retaining walls and sound walls, the closure of the Main Street HOV on/off ramps, restriping, construction and/or relocation of concrete barriers, drainage modification and replanting. All improvements are anticipated to occur within the existing State right-of-way. Continue reading

Santa Ana has lost its El Torito, which was located at the MainPlace Mall. “The 5,600-square-foot restaurant, which debuted just before the economic downturn, could not sustain good financial results at the location, said Rick Van Warner, spokesman for El Torito’s parent company Real Mex Restaurants,” according to the O.C. Register’s Fast Food Maven column.
What a shame! I loved their $1 Taco Nights – and their freshly made guacamole, which their servers would prepare table side. Continue reading

I had lunch with a state legislator last week and he dropped a bombshell – apparently there are forces in the Democratic Party that are asking State Senator Lou Correa to consider taking back his old seat on the O.C. Board of Supervisors – and giving incumbent Supervisor Janet Nguyen the boot.
The last time I met with Correa, earlier this year, he said he was looking at the possibility of running for State Attorney General, but only if the incumbent were to run for U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein’s seat. Feinstein got cleaned out by Kinde Durkee so perhaps she might consider finally retiring. However if she runs again, where will that leave Correa? Continue reading
Irv Chase’s promoter, Archer Altstaetter, told NBC yesterday that the Chase family is “upgrading and investing in their buildings, without any malice toward anyone.” ”It’s no different than the Irvine Company or any other retailer in a mall saying hey, if your stores are not clean, you’re out,” said Altstaetter.

What started as an underutilized, rundown building is now an inviting space that will host a variety of community, education and workforce programs thanks to the work of more than 100 ARAMARK volunteers. They gathered together on Oct. 27, from 10 am to 3 pm, at The Salvation Army Santa Ana Community Center, located at 1710 W Edinger Ave, in Santa Ana.
In a single day, the volunteers completely transformed the Salvation Army Santa Ana Community Center, which serves more than 1,250 people monthly. The refreshed space now boasts a fresh coat of paint, a community garden and outdoor recreation space. But perhaps most importantly, volunteers created functional and attractive workforce readiness rooms that will provide members of the community, which has the second highest unemployment rate in Orange County, with the space and tools to train for and find jobs. IRVINE – The Great Picture: The World’s Largest Photograph & The Legacy Project is a multimedia exhibition that tells the compelling story of how six artist/photographers and their friends came together to build what the Guinness Book of World Records acknowledges as the “world’s largest pinhole camera” (also known as a Camera Obscura) at the Orange County Great Park. This exhibition documents how the Legacy Project artists activated their gigantic camera to create the world’s largest photograph.
