Ward 3 candidate Brett Franklin’s secret weapon

Former Santa Ana Council Member Brett Franklin continues to lead in polling for Ward 3, despite the fact that there are quite a few candidates running for that seat, including Planning Commissioner Eric Alderete, who has amassed a vast warchest – largely from contributors who don’t live in Santa Ana.

How is Franklin doing it? I asked him that the other day and he offered an anecdote.  He ran into a lady at the supermarket the other day.  She was a Latina and she seemed somehow familiar to him.  She approached Franklin and said that she and her family voted for him via absentee ballot.  Apparently she remembered going to the same school as Franklin, in the fifth grade! Mark McLoughlin tries to fool the Republican voters in the RSCCD’s Area 5

Nice try, but no cigar.  Mark McLoughlin, a candidate for Area 5 on the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Education, sent out a mailer today implying that he is a Republican.  But he is not.  He is, like the other two candidates for Area 5, a Democrat.

McLoughlin also has never met a tax increase he didn’t like.  He has supported every single bond measure in our area in the past ten years.  And he currently supports yet another one, Measure Q.  He also supports Prop. 30, another tax increase. Continue reading→

The SAPD investigates a fatal motorcycle accident at MacArthur and Harbor

Santa Ana Police Department Advisory: SAPD Traffic Collision Investigation

On 10/22/12, 1325 hours, officers responded to an injury traffic collision near the intersection of MacArthur and Harbor Blvd. It was reported that a motorcyclist was still lying in the street.

When Officers arrived, it was determined that the motorcyclist was the only party involved. The investigation concluded the motorcyclist was traveling at approximately 30 MPH when he had just changed lanes behind a vehicle that stopped suddenly. The motorcyclist braked and laid down his bike to avoid the vehicle and was then thrown from the bike. Continue reading→

Actions Speak Louder Than Words: Councilmen Benavides & Sarmiento Are Bad for Labor and for Business!

I wrote previously about how Council Members Benavides and Sarmiento didn’t share with the Orange County Labor leaders that they did a ton of contracting out to private companies this year, like street sweeping, parking enforcement, and emergency medical transportation – killing hundreds of union jobs. But they were given the labor endorsement by the failed political labor staff over at the OC Labor Federation, Teferi Gebre and Julio Perez, who didn’t review their anti-labor voting records. Did the SAUSD waste several thousand dollars on useless scanners?

Another scandal has erupted at the Santa Ana Unified School District as evidence has come to light indicating that the SAUSD has spent thousands of dollars on scanners for their warehouse – and the scanners don’t work!

Does Santa Ana need a major park space or a Golf Course?

The City of Santa Ana is in dire need of open park space. Our city does not have nearly enough park space for our residents to enjoy the outdoors. Not too many residents know about a quietly kept secret. The City of Santa Ana owns some of the land that the Riverview Golf Course is currently occupying! The golf course is a large piece land that stretches from 17th Street all the way to the 22 freeway along the riverbed. It is full of plush green grass, a man-made lake, and has pre-existing trails. It sits on a total of 114 acres, with 21 of those acres in the city of Orange. The remaining 93 acres are in Santa Ana, with 32 acres belonging to Santa Ana and 61 acres belonging to the Orange County Flood Control District. Continue reading→

Santa Ana, CA — Fairhaven Memorial Park & Mortuary will host its Dia de los Muertos Service at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 2nd at the North Gardens Pavillion in Fairhaven Memorial Park.

Dia de los Muertos (or Day of the Dead) is a celebration of the lives of those who have passed, honoring the dead with art, music, altars, and plenty of smiles and is held on November 2, when tradition says the souls of departed loved ones return to partake of the offerings (flowers, candles, food and drink) set out for them on ofrendas by families and friends. SANTA ANA, CA – (October 23, 2012) – The
 City of Santa Ana, Parks, Recreation and Community Services Agency proudly announces the opening of a new exercise park in the Madison Park Neighborhood. On October 27, 2012, at 9 a.m. a Ribbon Cutting ceremony will take place at this exciting new park, which is located, adjacent to the very popular Pacific Electric bike trail. This new .41-acre park is located on Maple Street just north of Occidental Street. As you are biking, walking or running south on the Pacific Electric trail, you will find this new oasis of health just south of Edinger Ave. The ceremony will take place at 9 a.m., where light refreshments will be served and a drawing will be held for a new bike.
