When Newport Beach resident Jack Jakosky bought the Santora building, in October of this year, he told the Voice of OC that “I want to increase the number of art-related tenants,” Jakosky said. “It needs to go back to its roots, frankly, and that’s my objective.”
“I think Jack is genuinely interested in using the Santora to support the arts in Santa Ana,” said Mike McGee, director of the Cal State Fullerton Begovich Gallery and a founder of the Grand Central Art Center. “I think he sees the Santora as an opportunity to use his knowledge about commercial properties and give back to the community at the same time,” according to the O.C. Register.
But tonight I found out that Jakosky has painted over a mural in the Santora basement that was painted by several artists including Matt Southgate and Alicia Rojas. He also painted over the storefront of the Studio del Sotano, which is run by Southgate. Continue reading→
We are almost to the New Year and it is time to take a look back at what happened in Santa Ana in the year 2013.
January, 2013
The year started with a lurch as our City Council seemingly lost their minds and dismissed our City Manager, Paul Walters, who in the previous year had only saved the Council from itself in part by outsourcing the Santa Ana Fire Department to the OC Fire Authority.
There was outrage in the Vietnamese community when the SAPD shot the unarmed Binh Van Nguyen to death. And a shocking video caught the Santa Ana School Police red-handed. Continue reading→

Marc Payan wakes up just about every day well before the sun comes up, and drives to Downtown Santa Ana from his home in Irvine. He heads to a parking structure where he leads Santa Ana residents in free workouts that start at 5 am.
It is a nice story, that the L.A. Times touted in a recent article, where they opined that “in one of the nation’s densest cities, there are no beaches and hardly any parks. And, for many, paying $100 or more per month for a fitness group just isn’t an option”
That is of course complete B.S. Santa Ana has 35 parks, four joint use sites shared with the SAUSD, and 19 recreation facilities, according to the Santa Ana Parks and Recreation Agency – and we are not that far from the beach. And there is in fact a downside to the workouts, dubbed Payan X. They have been waking up residents of Downtown Santa Ana for quite a long time. Continue reading→

Downtown Santa Ana has been invaded over the past few years by eateries that cater to hipsters and yuppies – not to the local populace. These establishments are pricey but we have found that their food safety and hygiene record is not always what you would hope for.
Unfortunately our Board of Supervisors voted a few years ago to not allow letter grade ratings of our local eateries. So we are supposed to go online and look for ourselves, but hardly anyone ever does that.
Here are our latest findings for the year 2013, as reported by the Orange County Health Agency, into what is going on in Downtown Santa Ana’s hip restaurants and bars. Major Violations (in red) pose the highest risk of causing food poisoning (or foodborne illness. Major violations are sometimes resolved during the inspection or a reinspection may be scheduled to verify compliance. Minor Violations (in blue) pose less risk of causing food poisoning (or foodborne illness), and do not warrant immediate verification of compliance.
