Academy continue to reign as the nation’s culinary arts champions after clinching first-place for the third time in a row at the National Cooking up Change® competition that was held Monday, June 9, 2014, in Washington, D.C. Their journey began this spring when they competed against other high school students enrolled in culinary arts programs in Orange County and won first place. A man in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a train Monday evening, according to the OC Register, which also reported that “witnesses told investigators that the signals warning pedestrians and motorists about the incoming train had activated, and the man appeared to move underneath the arm meant to block the sidewalk.”
The fatal collision halted train traffic through the area, according to Metrolink’s official twitter feed. Buses were sent to the area in order to assist commuters.

WESTMINSTER – A man was sentenced Friday to 25 years and eight months in state prison for placing a female relative in a bathtub filled with water that was over 120 degrees Fahrenheit and severely burning and disfiguring the victim. Alfred Alexander Hollimon, 24, Westminster, was found guilty by a jury March 21, 2014, of two felony counts of child abuse, one felony count of mayhem, and a sentencing enhancement for causing great bodily injury to a child under 5, with a prior strike conviction in 2008 for attempted robbery in Nevada. This fall’s Santa Ana School Board race is shaping up to be perhaps the most interesting local election in awhile.
Candidates for the SAUSD School Board who already announced that they are running in November include Shuntele Andrews, a retired Valley High School teacher; Cecilia Aguinaga, a community activist who serves on the OC Vector Control Board; Eric Alderete, an attorney and Planning Commissioner; and Valerie Amezcua, a Supervising Probation Officer at the Central Youth and Family Resource Center in the City of Santa Ana.
Two SAUSD School Board Trustees are up for reelection – John Palacio and Audrey Yamagata-Noji. Both have been in office far too long. I hear Yamagata-Noji may be retiring from the School Board. I have not heard that about Palacio. I suspect he will run again. He almost has to. He says he is a political consultant but who would hire him? He needs the pay and benefits he gets from the SAUSD. Rafael’s Pizza
Every Friday night is Pizza Night at my house and over the years we have tried just about every pizza joint in Santa Ana, but hands down our favorite is Rafael’s Pizza, located at 128 W. MacArthur Blvd., near Main St., in Santa Ana.
The owner of Rafael’s, Rafael Dibernardo, has owned the pizza shop for 25 years as of this month. Overall it has been open for 38 years. It was previously called “Rubino’s Pizza.” Rafael’s pizza is simply amazing.

It appears that the vultures are already circling in the 34th State Senate District where Democrat Jose Solorio got blown out in this month’s Open Primary by Republican Janet Nguyen. It wasn’t close but Solorio will now advance to the November runoff – and no one at this point thinks he has a chance to win. The politicians have taken note of the blood in the water and at least one of them, Garden Grove Councilman Chris Phan, a Republican, is telling everyone that he is all in. The special election to replace Nguyen after she packs her bags for Sacramento will be held in February of next year and it will be a winner take all election – no runoff! Continue reading

Santa Ana Councilman Roman Reyna, looking to unseat ten-term Mayor Miguel Pulido in the November election, will kick off his mayoral campaign Saturday pledging to stamp out “backroom deals” and increase City Hall transparency, according to the Voice of OC.
Reyna’s fundraiser features most, but not all, of his Council colleagues and will be held at Original Mike’s, at 100 South Main St., in Santa Ana, at 11 am today, Saturday, June 7. Be careful. Original Mike’s received three health violations in April, including “Lack of/Unsanitary/Condition Walls/Floors/Ceilings.” And they received six health violations in March, including “Evidence of Vermin Activity/Presence of Animals/Insects.” Yum!

Update: The mother and child were located at a movie theater in the city of Victorville. Both have been taken into custody/care of CAP-Homicide Detectives and returned to Santa Ana. Suspect/mother was booked into SAPD Jail for Child Abduction. The child has been return to her father.
