Santa Ana woman arrested and charged with carjackings in Irvine, Tustin and Costa Mesa

The Tustin Police responded to the 3090 block of Edinger Ave., in reference to an attempted carjacking, on March 9, at around 7:09 pm.

The female suspect in that crime was suspected to have committed previous carjackings in Costa Mesa and in Irvine. Detectives from the Tustin Police Department identified the suspect using forensic evidence left at the Tustin crime scene.

On March 12, Santa Ana resident Jocelyn Cano, 21-years-old, was arrested by Tustin Dectives, without incident, at a residence in Santa Ana. Continue reading→

MAN FORMERLY ON SAPD’S MOST WANTED LIST CONVICTED OF MURDERING EMPLOYER IN 2009

SANTA ANA – A man who was on the Santa Ana Police Department’s (SAPD) most wanted list was convicted today of murdering his employer. Gerald Guy Byrne, 54, was convicted of one felony count of second degree murder. The defendant has two prior strike convictions for robbery in 1986 and arson in 1993. The Court will hear a bifurcated trial on the defendant’s prior strike convictions on April 10, 2015, at 9:00 a.m., in Department C-41, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana. Byrne faces a maximum sentence of 55 years to life in state prison if convicted of the prior strike offenses.

At the time of the crime, Byrne was working for 69-year-old Charles Samo. Continue reading→

You know, I have never even met Ryan Chase? And if I did see him in real life, I probably wouldn’t even know the difference unless he introduced himself. Saw him speak at a city council meeting about that stupid train they’re building through 4th st. (BTW, public transportation and the corporate elite forcing us to drive and own cars in order to get by in this stupid So. Cal. Advisory: SAPD Officers Arrest One for Carjacking Looking For Second Suspect And Weapon

Arrested: Yuly Andres Aguayo (22) Santa Ana

On 3/16/15, at 8:53 A.M., officers were dispatched to the Northgate Market located at 1623 W. 17th Street (Ward 3) to investigate a carjacking which had just occurred.

Officers located the victim who told them that he parked his vehicle in the parking lot of the market and noticed the two suspects panhandling. The suspects asked him for money and he told them he was not interested as he entered the store. Continue reading→

Santa Ana man arrested today after he allegedly tried to stab his son

Today is St. Patrick’s Day and a Santa Ana father apparently chose to celebrate it by allegedly “attempting to stab his son before fleeing his home and leading police on a short pursuit before being subdued and taken into custody,” according to the O.C. Register.

The purported stabber is a man in his 50’s and the incident happened at the 400 block of East Central Avenue. Continue reading→

Did you know that St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in Mexico too? But not for the same reasons. They celebrate it because of the “San Patricios.” The Saint Patrick’s Battalion (Spanish: Batallón de San Patricio) was a unit of 175 to several hundred immigrants (accounts vary) and expatriates of European descent who fought as part of the Mexican Army against the United States in the Mexican-American War of 1846 to 1848.

Most of the battalion’s members had deserted or defected from the U.S. Army. Made up primarily of ethnic Irish and German Catholic immigrants, the battalion included Canadians, English, French, Italians, Poles, Scots, Spaniards, Swiss, and native Mexicans, most of whom were Roman Catholics. NEPHEW TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR SHOOTING-MURDER OF UNCLE AFTER ARGUMENT AT BIRTHDAY PARTY

*Co-defendant girlfriend is charged as an accessory after the fact in this case

WESTMINSTER – A nephew is scheduled to be arraigned today for the shooting murder of his uncle. Daniel Lee Duvall, 37, Westminster, is charged with one felony count of murder with sentencing enhancements for personal discharge of a firearm causing death, three sentencing enhancements for crime-bail-crime, prior felony convictions for residential burglary in 1996, possession of a firearm by a felon in 2002, possession of a firearm by a felon in 2008, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell in 2010. Co-defendant Tina Pauline Arbogast, 48, Westminster, is charged with one felony count of accessory after the fact.

If convicted, Daniel Duvall faces a maximum sentence of 85 years to life in state prison. Arbogast faces a maximum sentence of three years in state prison. Both defendants are scheduled to be arraigned today, March 13, 2015, in Department W-12, West Justice Center, Westminster. The time is to be determined. Continue reading→

Toddler who wandered off and was hit and killed by a car, identified

Advisory: UPDATE: Vehicle vs. Pedestrian (1 year old Toddler) Identified

The deceased toddler has been identified as Jesus Alvarez ( 1 year old), Costa Mesa

On 3/14/15 at 2154 hours, officers responded to a report of a small child who had been struck by a vehicle in the area of 800 S. Newhope Street. Officers located the male toddler lying in the roadway at the intersection of Newhope and Flight Streets.

The child had been struck by a white Toyota Camry traveling north on Newhope in the #1 lane. The driver remained at the scene and was cooperative throughout the investigation. Intoxication did not appear to be a factor in the collision. There is no indication that speed was a factor in this collision. The driver indicated he did not see the toddler on the roadway prior to the collision. Continue reading→

Do the people of Santa Ana want a Drinking District or a Wellness District?

Downtown Santa Ana merchants and community groups, including Building Healthy Communities, will be at this Tuesday’s Santa Ana City Council meeting, to propose that the city establish a Downtown Wellness District strategy to foster retail and services that are authentic to our city’s Latino character, according to the O.C. Register.

The idea is to serve the people of Santa Ana and further diversify the visitors coming to DTSA by rebranding the area as Calle Cuatro Marketplace.”

We have been saying for some time that the hipster gentrification of DTSA has not served the majority of our residents and has in fact been part of an ongoing effort to push Latinos out of DTSA and cater to people who don’t live here. Continue reading→

A toddler wandered off last night and was struck and killed by a car

This might the most horrific story we have ever reported. A little boy, only 2 years of age, somehow wandered off and left the safety of his home, at the 800 block of South Newhope Street, at about 10 p.m. on Saturday night. Sadly this story has a most unhappy ending.

The little boy was struck by a Toyota Camry, according to the O.C. Register.

The toddler was taken to a local hospital, where his parents joined him at his bedside, but he did not survive. Continue reading→

Property Owners and Managers are Needed to House OC Veterans

There are at least 446 veterans who are homeless on any given night in Orange County according to the 2013 Orange County “Point in Time Homeless Count”. In addition, to this number, there are more than 2,000 veterans with incomes below 50% of the County’s median income applied on the Orange County Housing Authority waiting list for housing assistance during a two-week period in February 2012. This demonstrates the immediate needs of local veterans for basic shelter and for long term decent, safe and affordable housing. The 2013 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress stated that many homeless veterans need supportive services and case management to successfully transition from homelessness to permanent housing. In addition, these veterans typically do not have the financial resources to pay rent. They may also face barriers such as poor credit, prior evictions or lack of funds for a security deposit or other move-in expenses. Continue reading→

The SAPD captured two gangbangers who shot a young woman in Ward 3

A 19-year-old Santa Ana woman was shot in the leg this Thursday night, at around 8 pm, while she was hanging out with two friends in her driveway, at the 1700 block of North Spurgeon Street, according to the O.C. Register.

An 18-year-old and 17-year-old drove up to the woman and her friends and fired five shots. The woman was hit once in her leg.

Fortunately an SAPD police officer was nearby, heard the shots and took chase as he saw a car taking off from the vicinity. The police officer pulled over Joshua Fermin, 18 of Santa Ana and a 17-year-old male friend of his at the Main Street onramp to the southbound I-5. Continue reading→

MAN TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING AND COMMITTING LEWD ACTS ON 2-YEAR-OLD GIRL

WESTMINSTER – A man is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow for sexually assaulting a 2-year-old girl and committing lewd acts upon her. Joseph Michael Hishmeh, 21, Garden Grove, is charged with one felony count of sexual penetration with a child 10 years or younger, five felony counts of lewd acts upon a child under 14, and a sentencing enhancement allegation for committing substantial sexual conduct with a child. If convicted, Hishmeh faces a maximum sentence of 31 years to life in state prison. He is being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow, Friday, March 13, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. in Department W-12, West Justice Center, Westminster.

Between April 30, 2014, and Sept. 1, 2014, Hishmeh is accused of committing lewd acts upon 2-year-old Jane Doe in his home by touching her breasts, vagina, and legs under her clothes with sexual intent. On one occasion, he is accused of digitally penetrating Jane Doe’s vagina. The evidence was discovered during an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, CA – The Bowers Museum is currently upgrading many of the historic galleries in its Mary Muth Wing, which will reopen with an exciting series of exhibitions in 2015, starting in April with the highly-anticipated Adams, Curtis and Weston: Photographers of the American West exhibit. In order to take advantage of the progress of the renovation, the Bowers will mount a special Treasures of Veracruz exhibit opening Saturday, March 14, which will showcase eight Pre-Columbian artifacts from the museum’s permanent collection.
