There was a drive by shooting in Santa Ana yesterday, at Birch and Chestnut, that went unreported by local media.
A resident said that she heard about 7 shots fired. Bullet casings and evidence markers were on the ground. Reportedly a few buildings in front were also hit by bullets, according to local photographer and community activist Igmar Rodas’s Facebook page. Continue reading

Mental Illness Linked to Shorter Life Spans in OC
Consistent with previous studies, the Orange County Health Care Agency (HCA) has found that Orange County residents with a severe mental illness tend to die earlier, about 18 years earlier, than the general population. Specifically, the average age at death for residents with a documented mental illness was 58.5 years, compared to 76.2 years among deaths to residents without any mention of a mental illness on their death certificate.
Nearly 8 in 10 residents with a mental illness died prematurely (before age 75) compared to only 36% of all deaths to County residents without any mention of mental illness. While unnatural causes like accidental overdose and suicide were indeed a part of the reason, this increased mortality is largely thought to be due to treatable medical conditions caused by modifiable risk factors such as smoking, obesity, substance abuse, psychotropic medication side effects, and inadequate access to medical care as indicated by the top five leading causes of premature death to mentally ill residents: Continue reading

SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT PROVIDES FREE LUNCHES THROUGH SUMMER MEAL PROGRAM
SANTA ANA, CA — June 19, 2015 – The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) will be participating in a free summer lunch program at 51 school sites and 8 Parks and Recreation Centers across the district from June 22 to August 26.
The federally-funded program operates Monday through Friday for breakfast (except Parks and Recreation Centers) and lunch. The program is open to all youths under the age of 18, no income requirement or registration is necessary, and all participants must eat their lunch at the site. Continue reading
Two thugs attacked a 59-year-old man on Thursday night, at around 10:45 p.m., robbing him of his satchel, at the 3700 block of South Greenville Street, in Santa Ana, according to the O.C. Register.
The man was rushed by two males who were wearing dark clothing, according to the SAPD.
The victim was fortunate to escape from the suspects however he later realized that his satchel was gone. Continue reading

Another day another ridiculous shooting in Santa Ana. This time two men with no gang connections were badly wounded as they were shot while they worked on a car in their driveway at the 1300 block of South Rita Way, in Santa Ana, at around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday evening, according to the O.C. Register.
One victim, identified him as 21-year-old Juan Seneseros, was shot in the back. The other victim, a 26-year-old man was shot in the upper and lower torso and was in serious condition. Continue reading
Violence has been growing in Santa Ana all year long but today we hit a new low as a man attacked another man with a hammer after they had a disagreement on Thursday evening about recyclables, according to the O.C. Register.
SAPD police officers interviewed the victim at an unnamed local hospital at 5:30 pm, where he was being treated for a 1-inch cut on his head and an ankle injury. Continue reading

More than 25% of the students graduating from the Santa Ana Unified School District will receive the Seal of Biliteracy Award
(June 17, 2015) – More than 25% of the students graduating from the Santa Ana Unified School District will receive the Seal of Biliteracy, an award that certifies they have demonstrated fluency in two or more languages. This is particularly valuable in a competitive job market as employers seek applicants who can communicate in more than one language.

A 9-year-old girl named Genesis Ramos, stopped a would-be robber from taking her mom’s wallet on Monday morning, while she and her 13-year-old sister Ingrid were sitting in their car at a 7-Eleven parking lot on Grand Ave. and East Warner, according to the O.C. Register.
A man pulled up next to the girls in the parking lot and then opened an unlocked door and grabbed a wallet that had been left on the seat by their mother, who was inside the store using an ATM so she could buy donuts for the girls before heading to school.
Genesis, a fourth-grader, jumped out of the car and struggled with the man, who all the while kept trying to close his driver’s side car door. The man insisted he didn’t take anything before finally relenting and letting go of the wallet. Continue reading

Attorney Matthew Pappas has filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Santa Ana, on behalf of the Sky High Holistic marijuana collective and others, alleging in part that Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido and other city officials have financial ties to certain medical marijuana dispensaries in the city and have been directing police to shut down their competitors, according to the Voice of OC.
According to the lawsuit, Pulido conspired to derail a grassroots marijuana initiative in the city while soliciting cash from existing pot clubs who the Mayor allegedly promised winning slots in a Feb. 5 city-sponsored marijuana dispensary lottery. The lawsuit claims the payments were used to pay for gathering public support for the city’s favored pot initiative, according to the OC Weekly. Continue reading
