County Announces Enforcement of Public Hours, Closure of One Area Along Santa Ana River Trail
Santa Ana, CA (Oct. 30, 2017) — On Friday, November 3, 2017, the County of Orange will begin active enforcement of public hours along the recreational Santa Ana River Trail (SART) that runs adjacent to the Santa Ana River flood control channel. In addition, beginning November 10, the County will permanently close to public use the west side of the flood control channel between 17th Street and Adams Avenue in the City of Fountain Valley.
OC Parks and the Orange County Flood Control District have had permanently posted signage declaring the public access hours along the entirety of the trail, though the hours have been inconsistently enforced. The public access hours will remain the same as currently posted, November 1-February 28 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and March 1-October 31 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Starting November 3, 2017, individuals who access the SART outside of the posted hours will be in violation of state trespass laws and subject to citation. On Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 12:51 p.m., our officers responded to the intersection of 1st and Center Streets in regards to a vehicle versus bicyclist collision with the bicyclist reported to still be in the roadway. OCFA responded and treated the bicyclist at the scene before transporting him to a local trauma center with major injuries. He was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Continue reading

On Friday, October 27, 2017, at approximately 9:50 PM, the Santa Ana Police Department received a call of a fight in the area of Cubbon Street and Baker Street. At approximately 9:55 PM, another call came in of a subject down in the area of 1100 West Brook Street.
SAPD officers and Orange County Fire Authority responded. They discovered an unidentified 17-year old male down on the sidewalk suffering apparent stab wounds to his upper torso. Paramedics pronounced the victim deceased at 10:08 PM. Continue reading

DISTRICT ATTORNEY ANNOUNCES SELECTION OF NEW CHIEF AND ASSISTANT CHIEF OF BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION
SANTA ANA, Calif. – Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas announced today the selection of Paul M. Walters as the Chief of the Bureau of Investigation (Bureau) and Ron Seman as Assistant Chief for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) following a competitive recruitment process. The Bureau is the 32-unit law enforcement division of the OCDA, operating as an investigative agency. The Bureau consists of 130 sworn law enforcement investigators and 90 investigative assistants and technical support members, who provide trial support and investigate original jurisdiction cases.
“The OCDA is excited for this new direction of leadership in the Bureau. Chief Walters brings a unique skillset of knowing how to run a large police department combined with the skills needed to work as an executive in the County,” stated District Attorney Tony Rackauckas. “Assistant Chief Ron Seman led the office during a difficult and transitional time and proved himself to be an effective leader. We are excited to continue our great work in fighting gang crimes, human exploitation and trafficking, DNA and much more. An Orange County Superior Court judge agreed Friday to delay the re-sentencing of a convicted child molester, Kevin Jonas Rojano-Nieto, but warned the man that he will get 25 years to life in prison when he returns to court in January, according to the O.C. Register.
It looks like Judge M. Marc Kelly learned from his mistake back in 2015 when he took 15 years off of Rojano-Nieto’s mandatory minimum sentence. Continue reading
David Lee Macmillian, a 54-year-old homeless man, died Thursday evening, Oct. 26, hours after trying to ride his bicycle through opposing vehicle traffic and colliding with a Corvette, according to the O.C. Register.
Macmillian was apparently riding his bike north on the southbound side of Main St., on the sidewalk on Thursday night, at 6:46 p.m. Then he left the sidewalk and tried to cut through traffic, as he was riding his bike northeast near West Columbine Ave. That is when a yellow 2005 Corvette that was heading north on Main collided into him, according to the SAPD. Update on Sheriff’s Department enhanced homeless outreach
SANTA ANA, Ca. (Oct. 26, 2017) – After seven weeks of an enhanced enforcement presence along the Santa Ana Riverbed and in County flood control channels, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, along with partner law enforcement agencies from Anaheim, Orange, Santa Ana and Fountain Valley, has made 180 arrests and, in concert with other agencies and organizations, offered services and resources to hundreds.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department on Sept. 6 increased efforts along the riverbed, and on Sept. 16 launched an enhanced deployment to target the criminal element proliferating in homeless encampments, while continuing to offer services and resources for those living along the riverbed. Renato Gonzalez, a 35-year old transient, was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of attacking a Jack-in-the-Box customer, ransacking a 7-11 and then assaulting a police officer, according to the O.C. Register.
Gonzalez is now facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon, battery on a peace officer and violently resisting arrest, according to the Costa Mesa police. Continue reading

Advisory: SAPD Investigating Fatal Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Collision
Deceased: Johanna Vargas (27) Santa Ana
On 10/24/2017, at approximately 11:22 pm, officers responded to the scene of a vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic collision in the 3600 block of West First Street (near Santa Anita Park). Officers located a 27-year old female pedestrian, Johanna Vargas, suffering from major head trauma as result of the collision. The Orange County Fire Authority responded to the scene and transported the victim to UCI medical center to be treated. The victim succumbs to her injuries at the hospital. Continue reading

Advisory: Excessive Heat Warning in Effect through Wednesday 10/25 at 8:00PM
The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning, which will be in effect through Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at 8:00PM.
Temperatures in most inland Orange County and surrounding mountain communities are expected to reach high temperatures, between 101° and 108°, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke for those who are more sensitive to heat. Slightly lower temperatures are expected on Wednesday.
Prolonged exposure to excessive temperatures may cause serious conditions like heat exhaustion or heat stroke and can even be fatal. Symptoms of heat exhaustion may include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache, nausea or vomiting and dizziness. Warning signs of heat stroke may include an extremely high body temperature, unconsciousness, confusion, hot and dry skin (no sweating), a rapid, strong pulse, and a throbbing headache. If symptoms of heat stroke occur, immediately call for medical assistance. Move the impacted person to a shady area and begin cooling their body with water. Continue reading
