The Calliotree: A Santa Ana Civic Art Project
The Calliotree is a public art installation being created at the tree that marks Santa Ana’s birthplace.
The City of Santa Ana was founded in 1869 with a man in a tree. Our founder, William H. Spurgeon, climbed a Sycamore tree to survey the land, and fell in love with it.
A sycamore tree marking the city’s birthplace still stands, but in a sorrowful state. It lives in a parking lot, knitted into chain link fence, and is slowly dying from root crowding and an irreversible fungal infestation.
In talking with our community, we wanted to honor our origin story by re-integrating the tree as an interactive public landmark that speaks to our past, and our future. The tree is located in the heart of our vibrant downtown, home to one of our Arts District and Orange County’s best Artwalks.
“Calliotree” is inspired by the Calliope, a uniquely American instrument invented at the same time Santa Ana was founded. A calliope works via a network of steam-powered pipes (think circus music) played by a keyboard organ. The Calliotree combines a sycamore tree, digital arts, music, human touch, and a downtown sidewalk. The sycamore tree will be covered in a nervous system of smart lights that synchronize with music, creating a 20-foot tall light and sound show.
The Calliotree will be activated for community input on the First Saturdays of the month and will launch on May 6, 2017. To kick off the project, local artist Leah Shapi will be hosting a Treeversation where locals and visitors can write their inspirations, ideas and hopes for the Calliotree project on colorful scarves that will be strung up at the site.
The activation occurs in conjunction with Downtown Santa Ana’s First Saturday Artwalk and Boca de Oro Art and Literature Festival.

El Calliotree: Un Proyecto de Arte Cívico en la Ciudad de Santa Ana
El Calliotree es una instalación de arte público que se está construyendo en el árbol que marca el lugar de nacimiento de Santa Ana.
La ciudad de Santa Ana fue fundada en 1869 con un hombre en un árbol. Nuestro fundador, William H. Spurgeon, subió a un árbol sicómoro para visualizar el terreno y se enamoró de él.
Un árbol sicómoro que marca el lugar de nacimiento de la ciudad todavía sigue en pie, pero en un estado doloroso. Se encuentra en un estacionamiento con un cerco de alambre tejido y está muriendo lentamente por el amontonamiento de raíces y una infestación de hongos irreversible.
Al hablar con nuestra comunidad, queríamos honrar nuestra historia de origen reintegrando el árbol como un hito público e interactivo que habla de nuestro pasado y nuestro futuro. El árbol está ubicado en el corazón de nuestro vibrante centro de la ciudad, hogar de uno de nuestros mejores paseos de arte del distrito artístico y del condado de Orange.
”Calliotree” se inspira en el calíope, un instrumento exclusivamente estadounidense inventado al mismo tiempo en el que la ciudad de Santa Ana fue fundada. Un calíope funciona con una red de tubos de vapor (piensa en la música de circo) tocada por un órgano de teclado.
El Calliotree combina un árbol sicómoro, artes digitales, música, toque humano y una acera del centro de la ciudad. El árbol sicómoro se cubrirá con un sistema nervioso de luces inteligentes que se sincronizan con la música, creando un espectáculo de luz y sonido de seis metros de altura.
El Calliotree será activado para la participación de la comunidad los primeros sábados del mes y será lanzado el 6 de mayo de 2017. Para poner en marcha el proyecto, la artista local Leah Shapi, será la anfitriona de una conversación dirigida a la comunidad, donde los lugareños y visitantes podrán escribir sus inspiraciones, ideas y esperanzas para el proyecto Calliotree en pañuelos de colores que se atarán en el sitio.
Este gratuito y divertido estreno del proyecto ocurrirá conjuntamente con el Primer sábado del paseo del arte en el centro de Santa Ana y el Festival de arte y literatura: Boca de Oro.
