HIGHER EDUCATION FOR DEPORTED U.S. CITIZENS CLEARS FIRST HURDLE

Sacramento, CA – Today, The Senate Committee on Education approved Senate Bill (SB) 141, authored by State Senator Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana). This measure restores access to California colleges, universities and scholarships for young U.S. citizens, who are forced to live abroad as a result of their parents’ deportation.

“This was an important victory for young aspiring college students. SB 141 would allow U.S. born children forced out of the country, at no fault of their own, to pursue the American Dream and get a quality education,” said Correa. Continue reading→

DRUGGED DRIVING MEASURE EVOLVES INTO WORKING GROUP

Sacramento, CA – State Senator Lou Correa (D – Santa Ana), joined by state-wide law enforcement and victims’ rights groups, announced the establishment of a working group with the Chair of Senate Public Safety Committee, Senator Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley), to amend Senate Bill 289, a measure that would equip law enforcement and district attorneys to arrest and prosecute drivers under the influence of drugs. SENATE DECLARES APRIL 2013 AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH

Sacramento, CA – Senator Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana) made the following comment with the passage of Senate Resolution 13 (Correa, 2013”), which declares April 2013 as Autism Awareness month:

“I am proud that my colleagues in the Senate joined me in support of bringing greater awareness to Autism. As we have learned, Autism Spectrum Disorders are on the rise and new data suggests that Autism now affects 1 in 50 children. Families, especially in underserved communities, feel helpless and distressed by the lack of resources,” said Correa. “We must enact policies that expand needed supports and services and help families understand what programs are available to them,” he added. Sacramento—Senator Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana) joined NFL legend and national chairman of 9-1-1 for Kids, Tim Brown, to honor youth heroes and dispatchers heroes at the State Capitol in recognition of those who gallantly and intrepidly called 9-1-1 to help save a life or report a crime.

“As a parent, I appreciate how important it is to teach our young children on how and when to call 9-1-1 in an emergency. Teaching parents, children and senior citizens about 9-1-1 correctly can and does save lives,” said Correa. Continue reading→

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, State Senator Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana) introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 34 which designates April 23 through April 30, 2013 as “Black April Memorial Week,” in commemoration of the countless American and Vietnamese lives lost during the Vietnam War era.

FORUM FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES AND THEIR RIGHTS IN SCHOOL

(SANTA ANA, CA) – Various community leaders and non-profit organizations are working together to hold a forum for parents of children with disabilities to talk about the rights from birth through the education process. For parents who have children with disabilities, the moment they realize that their child has a disability; parents face a new adversity in learning about all the possible resources to help their son or daughter. Sometimes state program or the education system does not provide thorough information concerning the rights of a child with disabilities and parents have many questions their rights as a parent.
