SANTA ANA, CA (July 20,2012) – During the month of July, the Santa Ana Public Library will be showing three movies. On Monday, July 23, 2012, the documentary, “Los Que Se Quedan” (Those Who Remain) will be shown. This film, by Juan Carlos Rulfo and Carlos Hagerman, documents the families of those who have crossed the border to the United States in search of better opportunities. It explores the memories and identities of those who remain behind and continue to wait for their absent family members. The Voice of OC will sue to compel release of Drakodaidis letter

Norberto Santana, the Editor in Chief at the Voice of OC, said today on KPCC’s Airtalk that the Voice of OC is going to sue the County of Orange to compel the release of the letter written by “Alisa Drakodaidis, which reportedly contains allegations of improper actions by several county supervisors and District Attorney Tony Rackauckas.”

Orange County officials are now arguing that the public should not see the details of the Drakodaidis letter because “the letter contains personnel information, the disclosure of which would constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy,” according to the Voice of OC. Continue reading→

OC GOP Central Committee Member Thomas Gordon has pulled papers to run for Area Three of the Rancho Santiago Community College District. He is thus far the only candidate for that office.

Floral Park neighbors battle over RSCCD’s Area 5

Rancho Santiago Community College District Trustees Mark McLoughlin and Dave Chapel both live in Santa Ana’s upscale Floral Park neighborhood and now, thanks to redistricting, they have to run against each other, in November, for the new Area 5. One of them will lose and face the end of his political career.

Chapel complained about the redistricting in an email that the OC Weekly got a hold of. But he could not stop progress. The neat thing about the redistricting is that the Rancho elections are now area-specific. Continue reading→

SAUSD Trustee Roman Reyna has confirmed on this Facebook page that he is running for the Santa Ana City Council, again, this November. Reyna will be a candidate for Ward 5, which is currently held by Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez. She is termed out however a lawsuit filed by Santa Ana Parks and Rec Commissioner Max Madrid is seeking to compel the Santa Ana City Clerk to issue nomination papers to Alvarez, on the grounds that Measure D, which extended Council terms, reset the term limit clock for Alvarez. If Madrid’s lawsuit prevails Reyna will have to face off against Alvarez – again. She already beat him once, back in 2004. In that race Alvarez got over 26,500 votes while Reyna got only 10,720 votes, according to Smart Voter. Continue reading→

UPDATE: District Attorney Tony Rackauckas Monday quashed the release of a politically explosive letter sent to the Orange County Board of Supervisors by an attorney representing Deputy CEO Alisa Drakodaidis, who abruptly went on a medical leave in the wake of sex crimes charges against former county Public Works executive Carlos Bustamante, according to the Voice of OC.

“Indications are that Orange County Deputy CEO Alisa Drakodaidis is the latest high-level official heading out the door in the wake of the Carlos Bustamante sex crimes scandal,” according to the Voice of OC. Continue reading→

Tonight’s Santa Ana City Council meeting, which was held at the SAPD’s Community Room, was, as predicted, a real zoo. Media vans and news crews were everywhere and residents and out of town bloggers packed the proceedings.

As we stated in an earlier post, Council Member Carlos Bustamante, who is facing serious felony sex crime and public theft charges, was not likely to show up, and he didn’t. This is his second unexcused absence. After sixty days of not showing up to work, at City Hall, the City Council can dump him and appoint someone to fill out his term. Continue reading→

Solorio to run for the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s B.O.E.

Assemblyman Jose Solorio chose not to run against Supervisor Janet Nguyen in November, but he announced this afternoon, via email, that he is running for Area One of the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Education.

Solorio’s wife is a public school teacher, I believe at Santa Ana’s Valley High School. This would seem to be a good fit for him but it is a part-time job. He has not yet announced what his other employment plans will be.

One hangup for Solorio is that he voted in the past year to de-fund the County of Orange to the tune of about fifty million per year. He was promised by Assembly Speaker John Perez that the State Legislature would find a way to return that money to the County of Orange. That never happened and the County ended up in a lawsuit with the State of California. If the State prevails the money will have to come out of the County’s education budget. Continue reading→

PacTrust Bank’s grand opening in Tustin set for July 19

PacTrust Bank is celebrating a grand opening in Tustin on July 19. Local resident Laura Araluce, Tustin’s branch manager and the bank’s CEO Gregory Mitchell will be available to discuss the local impact of community banking. There will also be various city officials and commerce dignitaries attending the event.

PacTrust Bank recently merged with Beach Business Bank. The Tustin branch is opening on the heels of two other branch openings in Century City and Santa Monica as part of PacTrust’s expansion efforts. More people are turning to community banking in lieu of big banks’ hidden fees and poor customer service, which makes this a great time for PacTrust, a local bank that commits to and is involved in the community, to open a branch in Tustin – not far from Santa Ana.
