A 31-year-old man was shot in the leg while trying to break up a fight outside a Santa Ana bar early Friday, according to the O.C. Register.
The victim was leaving the El Coral Bar at 1:44 a.m., at the 1900 block of South Standard Ave., when his friends got into an argument with others who were outside the bar, according to the SAPD. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A gang member who worked as a federal informant was sentenced today to 21 years in state prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm in public. Fernando Jose Perez, also known as Inmate F, 34, Theo Lacy Jail, was found guilty by a jury on March 9, 2009, of one felony count of possession of a firearm by a felon with sentencing enhancements for crime-bail-crime, criminal street gang activity, and three prior strike convictions for possession of a firearm while on probation and street terrorism in 2000, being an active gang participant having a concealed firearm in a vehicle, gang member carrying a loaded firearm in public, possession of a firearm while on probation and street terrorism in 2001, and receiving and possessing stolen property and street terrorism in 2002, all in Orange County. He faced a maximum of 42 years to life in state prison.
On Aug. 3, 2015, the defense field a “Romero” motion, in which the judge can dismiss past strike allegations set forth in the complaint in order to sentence the defendant to less time in prison, in furtherance of justice. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A man was sentenced today to 55 years to life in state prison for assaulting a 2-year-old child causing his death. Lae Thongphun, 34, Garden Grove, was found guilty by a jury Dec. 14, 2015, of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter and one felony count of assault on a child under 8 years of age with force likely to cause great bodily injury causing death with a sentencing enhancement for a prior strike conviction for a first degree burglary in 2007 in Los Angeles County.
At the time of the crime, Thongphun was in a romantic relationship with a woman and lived with her and her two young children in an apartment in Garden Grove. Continue reading→

ADDITIONAL CHARGES FILED FOR THREE DEFENDANTS CHARGED WITH ESCAPING FROM ORANGE COUNTY JAIL
SANTA ANA, Calif. – Additional charges were filed today for three defendants previously charged with escaping from custody at the Orange County Men’s Central Jail (OCJ). Bac Tien Duong, 43, Hossein Nayeri, 37, Newport Beach, and Jonathan Tieu, 20, Fountain Valley, are each charged with one felony count of the unlawful taking of a vehicle and one felony count of kidnapping to commit robbery. The defendants are scheduled to be arraigned today, March 4, 2016, at 10:45 a.m. in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana.
On Jan. 25, 2016, the defendants were each charged with one felony count of escape from pending felony charges. Duong faces also faces sentencing enhancements for prior prison convictions for second degree burglary in 1995 in San Diego County, reckless evading of a peace officer in 2008, and possession for sale of a controlled substance in 2011. Isidro Medrano Garcia, 42, Bell Gardens, was found guilty by a jury today of three felony counts of lewd acts on a minor. Garcia faces a maximum sentence of fouryears and four months in state prison at his sentencing on April 15, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. in Department N-11, North Justice Center, Fullerton.

It has happened again. A young man, Nathan Joe Alfaro, of Westminster, was murdered in Downtown Santa Ana, this time at a concert venue called Underground DTSA, on Thursday night, according to the O.C. Register.
A 23-year-old man was fatally stabbed when a fight broke out at about 10:30 p.m., inside Underground DTSA, which is located at 220 East Third St., in Santa Ana’s East End Promenade.
The fight broke out as the second of five punk rock bands scheduled to perform Thursday night was playing. “It was just one psycho dude who started a mosh pit,” musician Laena Geronimo said, according to KTLA. Continue reading→
It is hard to believe that a 35-year-old man would be inclined to aim a laser pointer at a police helicopter, but FBI agents arrested a man that age, Mario DeLeon Lopez, today and he was expected to be charged at a U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, with doing exactly that, according to the O.C. Register.
Lopez allegedly aimed his laser pointer at a police helicopter being operated by tactical flight deputies of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, on Nov. 14, 2015. The pilot of the helicopter reported being struck several times with a green laser that was bright enough to illuminate the cockpit.
The source of the laser was tracked to a suspect in the backyard of a Santa Ana residence by both Sheriff’s Deputies and members of the SAPD. Those officers arrested Lopez. He posted bail and was released while the Federal investigation continued. Continue reading→

Advisory: Santa Ana Experiences 29% Decrease in Shootings
In response to an increase in gang-related shootings during the month of January, 2016, the Santa Ana Police Department has deployed additional police officers and detectives to conduct proactive crime enforcement. This directed enforcement was purposefully concentrated in areas of our community most impacted by gang activity. The results thus far include 23 guns seized and 113 gang members arrested by SAPD gang detectives, and a 29% decrease in shootings during the month of February alone. Continue reading→
A groundbreaking ceremony for the Heroes Hall at the OC Fair & Event Center is set for Wednesday, March 16, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Costa Mesa Fair and Event Center, located at 88 Fair Drive, in Costa Mesa.
Approved by the OCFEC Board of Directors in 2014, this new exhibit will be available year-round and will focus on the personal stories of veterans and pay homage to the property’s Army airbase roots. The exhibit is expected to encompass more than 12,000 square feet with indoor/outdoor exhibit space. The former “Memorial Gardens” building will be relocated and repurposed as part of the overall exhibit which will also include memorabilia and tributes to California veterans. Booking Charges: Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer, Felony Evading and Hit and Run Collision
Summary: Thursday, 2-25-16, at approximately 3:07PM, a SAPD motor officer attempted to stop a black Ford Mustang for traffic violations in the area of 5th and Jackson when the driver accelerated and failed to yield.
A pursuit ensued during which the suspect vehicle collided with a civilian’s vehicle and continued to flee. At one point, the suspect stopped and began backing directly at the motor officer, using the suspect vehicle as a weapon. The motor officer was able to avoid the suspect vehicle. Continue reading→
