ORANGE COUNTY REPORTS WEST NILE VIRUS RELATED FATALITY

West Nile Virus Activity throughout the County is Increasing

(Santa Ana) – An 80 year-old Buena Park resident died last week with complications of West Nile virus (WNV) infection. Test results received this week confirmed the diagnosis. This is the first human death associated with WNV infection for this year’s season in Orange County.

““West Nile virus activity tends to peak in August and September in Orange County, but we continue to have cases occur throughout the fall,” said Dr. Eric G. Handler, County Health Officer. “Individuals can take precautionary measures to limit exposure to the West Nile virus. It is important for people to remember that the end of summer does not mean the end of West Nile virus season.” Continue reading→

Largest-Ever AlertOC Test Call to Reach 2.5 Million Residents Thursday

SANTA ANA, Calif. (September 22, 2015) – As part of National Preparedness Month, nearly 2.5 million Orange County residents will receive a phone call and e-mail on Sept. 24 to test the County’s mass notification system. This is the sixth annual, and largest-ever, regional test of AlertOC, involving 25 participating cities and the County’s unincorporated areas.

This year, Southern California is faced with dual ever-increasing, weather-related threats. The state’s historic drought elevated the wildfire danger to unchartered levels, and the El Niño storms are anticipated to be massive. Both wildfires and flooding occur rapidly, forcing evacuations and road closures to neighborhoods. AlertOC, the County’s mass notification system, is a critical link for residents to immediately learn of any required actions, such as evacuating their homes during an imminent fire. Community Alert: Santa Ana Police Department Receives $1.25M COPS Grant

City of Santa Ana Police Department receives second consecutive COPS grant award.

For the second year in a row, the Santa Ana Police Department was awarded $1,250,000 in grant funding for the addition of 10 police officers by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). This brings the total amount awarded to $2.5 million for the addition of 20 police officers over the past two years.

“Receiving consecutive COPS grant awards is a significant success for our community. This truly is a testament to our collaborative and supportive advocacy efforts,” stated Mayor Pro Tem Vincent Sarmiento. Continue reading→

Teen shot in the back near Garfield Elementary School

A male teen who appeared to be 17 or 18 years old was shot in the lower back today at about 7:45 p.m. at the 700 block of North Lacy Street, according to the O.C. Register.

The victim was walking nearby on Civic Center Drive when multiple shots were fired from a passing vehicle. The SAPD suspects the shooting was possibly a gang-related attack. Continue reading→

Bank Robbery Suspect Arrested

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (September 21, 2015) – On Monday, September 21, 2015, Orange County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Chandler Graham, 52, Los Angeles, in connection with an armed robbery at the Eagle Community Credit Union located at 23021 Lake Center Drive, in Lake Forest. Graham was arrested near the intersection of Red Hill Avenue and El Camino Real in the City of Tustin, following a short vehicle pursuit.

At approximately 10:46 a.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Eagle Community Credit Union for a report of a robbery in progress. Responding deputies were provided a description of Graham and indicated he left in a tan or gold sedan. Approximately six minutes later, a deputy observed the vehicle matching the description travelling northbound Interstate 5, approaching Sand Canyon Road. The vehicle exited Tustin Ranch Road and a short vehicle pursuit ensued before the vehicle yielded near Red Hill Avenue and El Camino Real in the City of Tustin. Graham, the driver and lone occupant in the vehicle, was taken into custody without incident or injury. Continue reading→

Teenage girl from Santa Ana and 2 men shot in the legs while sitting in an Anaheim garage

Two men and a teenage girl were shot in their legs Sunday night at around 10:30 pm., while they were inside a home’s garage in the 1600 block of South Ivanhoe Street, in Anaheim, near James Madison Elementary School, according to the O.C. Register.

The attack appeared to be unprovoked, according to Anaheim Police.

The victims told police that a person walked up to the garage, which had a partially opened door, and began firing a gun at the trio. Continue reading→

Santa Ana residents appear to be receiving unwarranted sweeping-related parking tickets

No posted notice about street sweeping…

The Santa Ana Police Department and city officials are violating California Vehicle Codes on street sweeping parking citations in instances where there are no posted warnings about the street sweeping parking violations, according to local activist Igmar Rodas.

Rodas says that these violations are being issued by Central Parking, the City’s Contracted parking enforcement company that follows the Street Sweepers. They also issue citations for people that forget to pay the city’s parking meters.

Rodas already has two parking tickets which violate a California Vehicle Code and he also received a ticket when his vehicle was not parked at the address the citation was issued at. Continue reading→

The CSUF Grand Central Art Center is hosting a video screening of Future Perfect: Time Capsules in Reagan Country (40 min, 2015), a film by Daniel Tucker, on Sep. 24, 2015, at 7 pm.

Developed during a 2014 residency at the CSUF Grand Central Art Center, this new video chronicles the story of 3 time capsules related to Ronald Reagan in southern California. Ten years after his death and 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and Ronald Reagan’s departure from the office of the President of the United States, this work grows out of an interest in the continued echoes of a speech delivered by Reagan following the end of his Governorship in California on August 19th, 1976 at the Republican National Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. In this speech Reagan talks of the difficulty he found in writing a letter for a time capsule to be sealed in Los Angeles and opened one hundred years in the future. Departing from this moment “Future Perfect” explores Reagan’s future-oriented science fiction imagination and rhetoric through visits to Reagan-inspired monuments and time capsules throughout California. Drive by shooting a block from Santa Ana High School injures an 18-year-old male

An 18-year-old Latino was shot on Saturday night, at around 8:38 pm, in the 300 block of South Birch St., in Santa Ana, according to the O.C. Register. The SAPD described the incident as a possible drive-by shooting.

SAPD police officers found the victim in an alley and he was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center, where he was in stable condition. Continue reading→

Pedestrian struck and killed in hit and run accident today at 17th and Fairview

A pedestrian, Agustin Perez-Sosa, a 25-year-old resident of Santa Ana, was struck and killed by a silver Chevy Malibu today at around 1:25 p.m., near Seventeenth and Fairview Ave., in Santa Ana, according to the O.C. Register.

Perez-Sosa was was flung 50 feet in the air, according to ABC News. The driver of the Malibu fled the scene.

The victim was a tree trimmer who was picking up cones along the side of the street, according to ABC News. He was in his second year of employment at West Coast Arborists, which is reportedly contracted by the City of Santa Ana. He is survived by his wive and a 10-year-old daughter. Continue reading→

Gang member shot a few blocks from Segerstrom High School

A man who admitted to being a gang member was shot at around 5:30 p.m. yesterday at the 3500 block of South Fairview Street, in Santa Ana, in what the SAPD believes was a gang-related attack, according to the O.C. Register.

When the police arrived at the scene the shooting victim was gone however a few hours later the Fountain Valley Regional Medical Center contacted the police to report that they were treating a man with a gunshot wound to his right thigh. Continue reading→
