(Santa Ana) – The Orange County Health Care Agency has confirmed four cases of measles in Orange County in the last seven weeks, which is consistent with an increase seen throughout California. WESTMINSTER – A self-appointed pastor who hosted regular “church” meetings and Bible studies in his Westminster home was sentenced today to 15 years to life in state prison for sexually assaulting two young male relatives beginning when the victims were 12 years old. James Ray Guerrero, 54, Westminster, was found guilty by a jury Nov. 27, 2013, of eight felony counts of lewd acts upon a child under 14, one felony count of distributing pornography to a minor, and sentencing enhancement allegations for substantial sexual conduct with a child and lewd acts on more than one child. SANTA ANA – A jury determined today that a man was legally sane when he murdered his grandmother and set her house on fire while his 8-year-old brother and 3-year-old niece were inside the home. Joseph Elija Ettima, 30, was found guilty by the same jury Feb. 4, 2014, of one felony count of second degree murder, one felony count of arson of an inhabited dwelling, two felony counts of child abuse, and a sentencing enhancement for arson with an accelerant. Ettima faces a maximum sentence of 27 years and eight months to life in state prison at his sentencing March 7, 2014, at 9:00 a.m. in Department C-41, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana. MAN TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR STABBING-MURDER
WESTMINSTER – A man is scheduled to be arraigned today for the stabbing-murder of another man in Garden Grove. Ubaldo Gutierrez Jr., 25, Tustin, was charged today with one felony count of murder with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon. He is being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned today in Department W-2, West Justice Center, Westminster. The time is to be determined. Continue reading

Toro Burger, a new burger joint that just opened in Santa Ana, is selling ramen burgers–those noodle hamburger hybrids that went viral last year and had everyone calling it the next cronut, according to the OC Weekly.
The Ramen Burger features a bun made of gourmet ramen noodles, with Angus beef, shaved green onions, baby mixed greens, and BBQ pork belly, for $9.
Other burgers available at Toro Burger include the Banh Mi Burger, with Angus beef paired with a steamed pork roll, pickled carrots, daikon radish, fresh cilantro, jalapeño, and a dousing of fish sauce, also for nine bucks; and a Kim Chi Burger, with Korean BBQ sauce and kimchi. Continue reading
SAPD officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 600 Block North Rosita on Tuesday night at around 8 pm, according to a press release they issued. A male victim was located in the drive way of a residence deceased from a possible gun shot wound.
The victim was identified by SAPD homicide detectives on Wednesday, Feb. 19, as Michael Paul Stanton, a 31-year-old Santa Ana resident. Continue reading
“Santa Ana has the second-highest child obesity rate in California among cities over 100,000.” Does that sound familiar? The bad news is that was reported way back in 2006, by Jennifer Delson when she was writing for the L.A. Times.
Has anything changed since 2006? “The cities with the highest levels of overweight youth are Anaheim (43.5%), Santa Ana (46.5%) and Stanton (51.8%)—cities which also have the highest rates of poverty, according to publichealthadvocacy.org.” That is a new report, sad to say.
Yet when a mother of four tried to run a scrimmage for her NJB youth basketball team recently at John Adams park, in Santa Ana, a park ranger shut them down informed them that next time they needed to make a reservation. Continue reading
The liberal political organization Moveon.org is targeting Orange County’s only Democratic Congresswoman, Loretta Sanchez, with a protest at her office in Garden Grove on Thursday, February 20, 2014.
What are these liberals upset about? Apparently Sanchez is not supporting revisions to the Voting Rights Act. Continue reading
The victory of day laborers in Costa Mesa will be honored at El Centro Cultural de Mexico on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 5 to 9 pm. They are located at 313 N. Birch Street in Downtown Santa Ana.
The City of Costa Mesa passed a law prohibiting the solicitation of work (10-354) in Dec. of 2005. Day laborers continued to resist the ordinance by congregating at Corners of Resistance, and people from the Tonantzin Collective monitored police behavior at the corners. This policy was combined with an agreement to have immigration officers in the Costa Mesa Police Station. In Sept. of 2009, 12 day laborers were picked up by undercover Costa Mesa police disguised as employers. All 12 were arrested and booked for the “crime” of looking for work. All 12 of them were later turned over to ICE custody and deported since they were undocumented. Continue reading
The very best elementary school in the Santa Ana Unified School District, according to the O.C. Register’s latest rankings, is John Muir Fundamental Elementary, which was ranked #25 in the county. The only other SAUSD elementary school to rank over #50 was Jim Thorpe Fundamental Elementary, which was ranke84d #32. The other fundamental school in town, Greenville Elementary, was ranked #72.
The rest of the SAUSD Schools, with the exception of Carl Harvey Elementary at #84, are ranked below the top 100, with 13 of them ranked below the top 300 and six ranked in the 200’s.
This is terrible news as the failure to educate kids in our elementary schools bodes ill for their advancement to middle schools and high schools. Continue reading

Author Grace Flores-Hughes will appear in person to talk about and sign her book “A Tale of Survival: Memoir of an Hispanic Woman” at Librería Martínez de Chapman University on Tuesday, February 18 at 7 p.m. In the presentation and in her book, Flores-Hughes tells her own story — of a Mexican-American girl growing up in south Texas during the ‘50s and ‘60s and the challenges she faced on a daily basis just to survive.

Orange County Coroner’s Office officials on Friday identified Juan Chavero, 21, as the man who was found fatally injured a day earlier by officers responding to a traffic accident in a business center at 160 S. Harbor Blvd., according to the OC Register.
The man was hit around 5:15 p.m. in an industrial center at 160 S. Harbor Boulevard, according to Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna. Chavero was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CBS. Continue reading
