Orange County’s Democratic State Assembly Representatives, Tom Daly and Sharon Quirk-Silva, did not vote for the “Trust Act,” which made its way once more through the California Assembly this week by a final vote of 44-22, according to Gabriel San Roman over at the OC Weekly.
San Roman reported that “The legislation was vetoed late last year when it reached the desk of Democratic Governor Jerry Brown. Supporters say the bill authored by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano will limit deportations fueled by the fingerprint-sharing federal Secure Communities program while restoring confidence between law enforcement and largely immigrant, Latino communities. Santa Ana Police Detectives requested media and public assistance in identifying suspects involved in series of commercial burglaries.
Detectives received a tip regarding the wheareabouts of a suspect involved in the church burglary at 5315 W. McFadden, which occurred on 5-1-13. This morning, detectives conducted a surveillance of the suspect’s vehicle, which resulted in the subsequent arrest of Daniel Cortes, age 29. Continue reading

OC Crime Victims’ Memorial Design Competition: Registration Deadline May 31, 2013
The County of Orange, the Board of Supervisors, and OC Parks are jointly sponsoring a competition for the design of a new Crime Victims’ Memorial to be placed at William R. Mason Regional Park.
The purpose of the competition is to create a memorial that will pay tribute to victims of crime, promote hope, healing, and remembrance for those touched by crime, give voice to those who cannot speak for themselves, and create a space for individual contributions to the site. For example, providing a place where individuals can inscribe names or display plaques in remembrance of crime victims from the community. Continue reading
Santa Ana bike trail activist Bruce Bauer, of the Neighbors for Santiago Creek Bike Trail, emailed an update today regarding the missing link on the Santiago Creek bike trail. The good news is that we are making progress, but hurdles remain:
We wanted to update you on the status of the Missing Link. We are pleased to inform you that the Missing Link is now on the City’s proposed Circulation Element. However, it is only ONE of TWO proposals to close the gap in the are of the Missing Link. Instead of the ¼ mile trail in Santiago Creek, or the Missing Link, the alternative route is an on-street route which would proceed south on the east side of Main St to Santa Clara, then west on Santa Clara to Flower and north on Flower to Memory Lane. Santa Ana College Holds 97th Annual Commencement
(Santa Ana)— Santa Ana College (SAC) will hold its 97th annual commencement exercise on Friday, May 24, at 6:30 p.m. at Eddie West Field – Santa Ana Stadium, 602 N. Flower St., Santa Ana, CA. There are 1,837 students who are eligible to graduate.
Five years ago, José Adrian Gaspar could not have imagined that he would ever wear a cap and gown to accept a degree he had earned through determination and many late nights. In 2008, he was in trouble with the law and had lost a friend through gun violence and enrolling in college was not even on his radar. But flash forward five years, and not only is he graduating from college, but he is earning two degrees and is the valedictorian of the SAC Class of 2013! Continue reading
