Air quality will be very unhealthy today due to fireworks particulates

PARTICULATE ADVISORY – Fireworks

Valid: Wednesday, July 4 through Thursday, July 5, 2018

Air quality is likely to reach unhealthful levels in areas throughout the South Coast Air Basin and in the Coachella Valley at times through July 5. Emissions from fireworks are expected to contribute to elevated levels of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), which can reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups air quality category, or higher, during and after the evening fireworks displays related to Independence Day celebrations. The firework emissions are expected to begin in the evening of Wednesday, July 4th with particulate levels expected to remain elevated through the morning of Thursday, July 5th.

The smoke and combustion products from fireworks add to the fine particles already present in the Basin that are primarily caused by motor vehicles, as well as fugitive dust and industrial emissions. Ozone concentrations are also expected to reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups category or higher, in the afternoons and evenings through the holiday into the upcoming weekend in many inland areas.

A explosion at the Exxon-Mobil refinery in Torrance has caused smoke and ash in surrounding areas. At this time the impacts are local.

In any area impacted by smoke: Everyone should avoid any vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion; people with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children should remain indoors. Keep windows and doors closed or seek alternate shelter. Run your air conditioner if you have one. Keep the fresh air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent bringing additional smoke inside. SOUTH COAST AIR DISTRICT – [November 5, 2013] – The Cities of Cathedral City, Palm Springs and Santa Ana are installing new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, with the help of Clean Transportation Funding from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC). Congressman Loretta Sanchez is inviting us to attend an educational briefing and discussion on “A Status Update on Southern California Air Quality and Related Issues” that she is hosting with the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the South Coast Air Quality Management District.

This event will be held on Friday, February 18 from 10:00a.m. to 11:30a.m. at the Rancho Santiago Community College District Boardroom. A light breakfast will be served.

The briefing will feature a presentation by the South Coast Air Quality Management District on topics such as small business assistance and incentives; goods movement and air quality; health impacts on residents; and policy initiatives and solutions.
