Fairhaven Memorial Park to Host Third Annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration 

Hundreds gather at free event on Sunday, Nov. 2 to remember friends and family members

Orange County residents will gather at Fairhaven Memorial Park & Mortuary for its annual Dia de los Muertos celebration, a family-friendly event to honor the lives of those who have passed. A vibrant memorial service, featuring a traditional offertory, music and art, will be held to pray for and remember the lives of friends and family members. Attendees are encouraged to bring a photo of their loved ones to place at the colorful altars. Complimentary pan de muerto and chocolate will be provided by El Indio Tortilleria, Inc.

Believed to be one of the few days a year when loved ones who have passed return to visit, Dia de los Muertos – also known as Day of the Dead – is celebrated annually on Nov. 2. Traditionally, loved ones create altars that include food, flowers, photos and articles that belonged to, or had special meaning, to the deceased. Continue reading→

Noche de Altares

Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) is a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, according to Wikipedia.

The Day of the Dead will be celebrated in Santa Ana with the annual Noche de Altares (Night of Altars) hosted by El Centro Cultural de Mexico, at 4th and Birch Streets, in Downtown Santa Ana, on November 1st, from 1- 10 pm. Continue reading→

This harmonious display consists of 28 trees selected from private collections who are devotees to the living, natural art form of bonsai. OCCTAC to hold a charity fundraiser silent auction tonight to support their new food bank

OCCTA Silent Auction

The Orange County Children’s Therapeutic ARTS Center will hold a fundraising event in support of their new Community Food Bank on Thursday, Sept. 11 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This event includes live art demonstrations, entertainment, raffles, refreshments, and a wide variety of auction items. Many important members of the local community are also expected to attend.

The ARTS center helps young people, especially those of limited financial means or in foster situations, by offering a program that combines academics, the arts, and creative therapies. The objective is to inspire and empower youths to realize their full potential despite their current situation. Continue reading→

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the Bowers Museum

Orange County Institution Offers Programs, Exhibits Showcasing Hispanic Heritage 

The Bowers Museum of Cultural Art in Santa Ana offers several wonderful exhibits and events to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Orange County.  In addition to fascinating permanent exhibits showcasing Hispanic cultures throughout the Americas, the Bowers will also host the opening screenings for the 5th OC Film Fiesta on Sept. 18 and 19.

Founded in 1936, the Bowers Museum evokes the inviting serenity of a Californio hacienda, with its arched corridors and red tiled roof.  Inside its halls, the Bowers contains permanent exhibits of Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican artifacts, California’s Missions and Ranchos era and Southern California’s Native peoples. O.C. woman co-produces new film, ‘Frontera’ 

Tina Aldatz didn’t anticipate co-producing a movie about illegal immigration and its ramifications on a small border town.

But the successful entrepreneur and Laguna Hills resident couldn’t resist once she read the script to “Frontera,” which hits theaters Friday in Beverly Hills, New York and Scottsdale, Ariz. SANTA ANA, CA (September 9, 2014) – Thousands are expected to converge on the City of Santa Ana for the 36th Annual Fiestas Santa Ana Weekend Event & Parade on Fourth Street. The festivities begin on Friday, September 12 at 5:00pm with carnival rides provided by Christian Amusements. The street fair will be held on Saturday and Sunday starting at noon with great food, information booths and cultural products for sale.

Santa Ana Library screens When Can I Come Home

Community: SANTA ANA PUBLIC LIBRARY CONTINUES SEPTEMBER PROGRAMMING WITH FREE SCREENING OF “WHEN CAN I COME HOME”

SANTA ANA, CA – As part of the Cal Humanities War Comes Home: Finding Peace at the Home Front series, the Santa Ana Public Library will have the following free events during the month of September introducing challenges faced by veterans and the realities of war.

  • Saturday, September 13, 2014, the library will be screening When I Came Home, winner of the NY Loves Film Best Documentary Award at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. When I Came Home follows Herold Noel, an Iraq war veteran who becomes homeless in New York City after returning from combat with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). After the screening there will be presentations by representatives from the Volunteers of America and US Department of Veterans Affairs. The screening will be held from 1:30 pm – 5 pm in the Santa Ana Public Library Meeting Room A. Light refreshments will be served. Continue reading→
