Performing Arts take Center Stage at Santa Ana High School
Santa Ana High School invites you to the production of In The Heights to be held March 27 – 29. The play is set in Washington Heights, a Hispanic neighborhood in Manhattan and very reminiscent of our own community in Santa Ana.

Join El Centro Cultural de Mexico for their 5th Annual San Patricios commemorative and educational event.
They will have Keltic/Irish and Indigenous/Mexican food, folk music from both cultures and a documentary about the San Patricio struggle.
The Saint Patrick’s Battalion (Spanish: Batallón de San Patricio), formed and led by Jon Riley, was a unit of 175 to several hundred immigrants (accounts vary) and expatriates of European descent who fought as part of the Mexican Army against the United States in theMexican–American War of 1846-8. Most of the battalion’s members had deserted or defected from the United States Army.

Author Grace Flores-Hughes will appear in person to talk about and sign her book “A Tale of Survival: Memoir of an Hispanic Woman” at Librería Martínez de Chapman University on Tuesday, February 18 at 7 p.m. In the presentation and in her book, Flores-Hughes tells her own story — of a Mexican-American girl growing up in south Texas during the ‘50s and ‘60s and the challenges she faced on a daily basis just to survive.
The event is free and open to the public, and Flores-Hughes’ book will be on sale at the venue. Librería Martínez de Chapman University is located at 216 N. SANTA ANA, CA (February 4, 2014) – A competitive grant awarded from the state to build a bike trail with landscape and hardscape improvements on the last half-mile of Flower Street in Santa Ana’s southeast section has $80,000 budgeted for a sculpture. This public art will be newly created and placed on the trailhead, which unites Santa Ana’s new bike trail with Costa Mesa’s Bike Lane on Sunflower Avenue. The sculpture will be a memorial to the Japanese-American farming community that was very active for several generations in this section of the City. The total trail project budget, including the sculpture is $1.4M. Continue reading

Sandra Pocha Peña Sarmiento
A civil war has broken out in Santa Ana’s Artists Village and it all started with a comment posted by Sandra “Pocha” Peña Sarmiento (yes she has a lot of names) over at the OC Weekly, under the pen name “Pocharte.” Here is the now infamous comment:
This is truly a sad development. Matt’s gallery was a much loved gathering place and his murals were beautiful expressions of our local artists’ vision. Now all this has gone the way of the gorgeous Caio Trattoria murals created by dozens of Artists Village tenants in the ’90’s & painted over by Chapter One when they moved in. Well it looks like Jack Jakosky, the owner of the Santora building who has made headlines recently for whitewashing a mural and evicting artists, is going to try to salvage his reputation by bringing in a bunch of musicians from Los Angeles.
