Santa Ana, California. – The Santa Ana Public Library is hosting a collaborative art project titled “Engaging Our Legacy, A Moment of Reflection” created by artists Jaydee Dizon, Sonora Ortiz, Alex Green, E. If you still care about the Santa Ana Art Walk, it is set for tonight

Well, tonight is the First Saturday of the Month, which means you can head down to Downtown Santa Ana for the monthly Art Walk, which features arts, crafts and live entertainment centrally located at: Artists Village – Second Street Promenade (2nd & Broadway) & the Santiago Arts Colony (Santa Ana Blvd. & Poinsettia).

But do Santa Ana’s residents still care about the Art Walk?  It is mostly attended by folks who don’t live here.  They come here to gawk at the art and hang out with the artists, although few of these folks actually buy any art.  They get drunk at the Memphis, Chapter One, Crosby and the Copper Door.  They chow down at some of those same venues, plus a few others.  They might even head to the Yost for music by performers I never heard of.

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46) is excited to announce the start of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition. This nationwide high school art competition recognizes the artistic talents of each Congressional district. Since 1982 more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

2013 Congressional Art Competition Theme:

The theme for this year’s competition is, “The Rhythm Of Our Lives.”

THEATRE OUT TO OPEN NEW VENUE WITH THE BROADWAY CLASSIC “Falsettos”

Santa Ana, CA (03/13/2013) – Theatre Out, Orange County’s gay and lesbian theatre company is thrilled to open their new venue with classic Broadway musical FALSETTOS beginning April 13, 2013.

FALSETTOS, with music and lyrics by William Finn and book by James Lapine, is a musical examination of family dynamics and love in the age of Ronald Reagan and ignorance. Marvin has left his wife and child for his lover, Whizzer. Marvin’s wife, Trina, has started dating his psychiatrist and struggles daily with the idea of her ex-husband and his lover being part of her extended family. As their son, Jason, begins to prepare for his Bar Mitzvah, the strength of the family is tested at each turn and they soon realize that love defines a family. FALSETTOS premiered on Broadway in 1992 combining Finn’s two one-act musicals MARCH OF THE FALSETTOS and FALSETTOLAND into the first full-length musical to tackle the AIDS crisis head-on. FALSETTOS was hailed as “exhilarating and heartbreaking…” by The New York Times and still touches audiences with its surprisingly modern sensibility. Continue reading→

The OC Fair is looking for artists to design a migrant farm worker memorial

Migrant Agricultural Worker Memorial Call for Artists 

The 32nd District Agricultural Association OC Fair & Event Center Board of Directors has elected to erect a memorial to commemorate the contributions of migrant agricultural workers to the growth and prosperity of Orange County. The project is open to California-based artists working in any media appropriate to the site and climate of coastal southern California.

Artists are encouraged to consider any area within the Centennial Farm. An additional proposed site for this project is located in the plaza and foyer area of the new entrance to the Pacific Amphitheater, an onsite performance space seating approximately 8,200. Estimated completion date for this new construction is spring, 2014. The Swallows’ Day Parade Is Coming

The 55th annual Swallows’ Day Parade and Mercado will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., in downtown San Juan Capistrano. The Swallows’ Day Parade is part of the Fiesta de las Golondrinas—the Festival of the Swallows. The festival is built around the swallows’ legendary return to Mission San Juan Capistrano every St. Joseph’s Day, March 19. The Swallows’ Day Parade is the largest non-motorized parade in the nation, and great fun for the whole family! First produced at the Lark/Hip-Hop Theater Festival in 2005, this urban hip-hop comedy is a sweet, loose-limbed shout out to Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Santa Ana, CA- Senator Lou is accepting entries from artists residing in the 34th Senate District who artwork interested in having their original art displayed at the upcoming California Contemporary Art Collection for the 2013-2014 Art Exhibit at the State Capitol. In 1997, the California State Senate’s Contemporary Art Collection program was initiated to recognize and celebrate contemporary art created by the wide variety of artists throughout the state.
