Our readers have spoken  and their choice for the 2012 Santa Ana Woman of the Year is the inimitable Alicia Rojas, the President of the United Artists of Santa Ana, an “organization committed to nurturing the growth and preservation of the Arts in Santa Ana by empowering the local arts community through initiatives focusing on economic partnerships, professional development and networking.”  Congratulations Ms. Rojas!

Ms. Rojas was also very actively involved with Santa Ana Occupy in 2012 and she helped stop the sale of the historic Santora Arts Building to Santa Ana Council Member David Benavides’ church, Newsong of Irvine.

Santa Ana, CA (01/2/2013) – Theatre Out, Orange County’s gay and lesbian theatre company is thrilled to open their 2013 season with the Orange County premiere of the smash hit [title of show] beginning January 11, 2013.

[title of show], with music and lyrics by Jeff Bowen and book by Hunter Bell, follows Jeff and Hunter as they try to create an original musical in less than three weeks with the help of their friends Heidi and Susan. It’s a musical about two guys trying to write a musical about two guys trying to write a musical and it unfolds in front of the audience as it is happening. Will they be able to write a new and exciting musical without resorting to the “tricks of the trade”? Touching, heartfelt, kooky and hilarious, [title of show] is a tribute to friendship and a love letter to the American musical. Continue reading→

Mexica New Year

If you celebrated the New Year on January 1, you might be surprised to know that the indigenous people of Mexico celebrate the New Year on a different day, on Feb. 2 to be exact.  El Centro Cultural de Mexico is hosting a Mexica New Year Event on February 2, 2013.  There will be a Spanish language presentation from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm then 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm they will have a presentation in English.  The event will be located at 313 N. Birch Street, in Santa Ana.

  • Olin Tezcatlipoca will speak on the theme is “Revival of Our Heritage By How We Live Our Lives”.
  • Citlalli Citlalmina Anahuac will speak on the women leaders of Cemanahuac.

Advisory: Orange County High School of the Arts on “Lock Out” for police activity in the area. Students and staff safe.

The Santa Ana Unified School District’s police department notified the community, via email that Tte “Lock Out” at Orange County High School of the Artswas lifted at 4:12 pm today.  They also reported that the area is secure.

As a creative end to Mercy House’s “30 Days in 30 Ways” campaign to raise interest in Homeless Awareness Month, a silent auction and interactive art exhibit will take place at the historic Santora Arts Building in collaboration with United Artists of Santa Ana (UASA).  A warm clothing drive and holiday art faire will round out the evening.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit Mercy House’s important services for the homeless in our community as well as support the work of United Artists of Santa Ana.
