SANTA ANA, Calif. – A selection of paintings by Laguna Beach artist Mark Jacobucci will be on display through January 30, 2012 in the Thomas F. Riley Terminal as part of John Wayne Airport’s Community Focus Space Program. The AMX Crew will be rocking the house @ Raices y Cultura, featuring Arthur Capone; Iemsk Kelevra; Armando Negrete; FirstGeneration SantaAna; and the rest of the AMX Crew, on Thursday, January 12th at Mexicanisimo, located at 2323 W. First Street, in Santa Ana.

This will be a night to demonstrate Hip Hop’s cultural aspects.  Featuring live acts AMX Crew, Endz, Edifica, Roverso and S Leeo, Michelo Els, and UTK.  And a special performance by Brake Dance with Battle Holex Crew, art by UTK and Zulu Kings. 8pm-2am, 21+ $5 cover charge. Continue reading→

THEATRE OUT TEAMS WITH ALL PUPPET PLAYERS TO PRESENT TONY AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL “AVENUE Q”

Santa Ana, CA (1/04/2012) – Theatre Out, Orange County’s gay and lesbian theatre company, is pleased to partner with Orange County’s All Puppet Players to present the Tony Award-Winning musical AVENUE Q beginning January 13, 2012. Running through February 25, this imagintive musical combines humans and puppets in a completely adult send-up of childhood favorites such as The Muppets and Sesame Street.

AVENUE Q tells the story of Princeton, an eager recent college graduate, who, down on his luck but still optimistic, looks for a place to live in an apartment complex on Avenue Q. While looking for a job and his purpose in life, Princeton finds friends and love. Other denizens of the avenue include the reclusive, porn-addicted Trekkie Monster; the bright-eyed school teacher, Kate Monster; unusual roommates, Nicky and Rod; Lucy the Slut, fiances Brian and Christmas Eve and Gary Coleman (yes, THAT Gary Coleman). With a music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx and a witty, heartfelt book by Jeff Whitty, AVENUE Q has been an audience favorite since it debuted Off-Broadway in 2003. Continue reading→

We started the tradition of asking our readers to vote for the “Santa Ana Man of the Year” last year, when my friend Naui Huitzilopochtli won easily.  I believe he now lives in Costa Mesa, so he won’t be repeating – but we do have some great choices in the poll below.

Riverview families join in celebrating the Posadas and Los Reyes Magos

Latino residents in Santa Ana’s Riverview Neighborhood have been making a difference in their community by celebrating the Posadas Navideñas for the past four years. The Posadas Navideñas is a traditional Mexican reenactment of the search for lodging that Mary and Joseph did nine days before the birth of Jesus.

The Gallardo family in Riverview schedules a night for the Posada to be held at their home, starting on the 16th of December and finishing on the 24th of December, which we call Noche Buena.  They do this without help from the City of Santa Ana – entirely on their own, unlike the Neighborhood Associations who lean on the City’s Community Development Agency for support. The historic First Baptist Church of Santa Ana is celebrating Christmas all throughout December.  You can join them this Saturday, Dec. 24, for their annual Christmas Eve candlelight program, which includes a service featuring Rev. Andy Quient, and Christmas Carols by candlelight, starting at 6 pm, in the patio and the Fireside Room.

Is the Velvet Lounge engaging in adult entertainment, in violation of their permit?

When Santa Ana’s gay bar, Velvet Lounge, was granted a C.U.P. (Conditional Use Permit) by the City of Santa Ana’s Planning Agency, they got most of what they asked for – except that they were forbidden from engaging in “adult entertainment.”  Well, judging from the pictures on their website, it looks like they might be violating their C.U.P. – regularly.  Take a look for yourself – the pictures below tell the story better than I can: Continue reading→

The annual Park Santiago Christmas hayride is a real treat

There is no better neighbor in my Park Santiago neighborhood than Blake Robinson.  He rescued my dog, Sparky, a few weeks ago when the wind blew down part of my fence and Sparky got out.  But beyond that, Blake is the driving force behind a Christmas holiday tradition that is a real hit with everyone in Park Santiago.

Every December, Blake and his family, friends and neighbors get together on a special night, which this time was on this Saturday night, for a special Christmas Hayride.  The hay bales are in a trailer that is decorated and hauled by Blake’s truck.  Santa shows up every year for the hayride, and everyone brings their favorite dish – which is generally homemade chili or pasta, for a pre-hayride potluck. If you are looking for something to do this Sunday, how about visiting the Bowers Museum – for free?  That’s right, you can visit the Bowers for free on Sunday, December 4, 2011, from 10 am – 4 pm.  The Bowers Museum offers free admission to the museum on the first Sunday of every month, thanks to a grant from the Target Corporation.  This offer is limited to 250 tickets per hour and 1500 tickets per day for specially ticketed exhibits.

SAPD DUI checkpoint to be set up east of the Art Walk tonight

Those who are planning on going to the Downtown Santa Ana Art Walk tonight better be careful as the Santa Ana Police Department is going to be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint tonight,  east of the downtown area, at 7:30PM – it is scheduled to conclude at 1:30AM.

A lot of out of towners like to go to the Art Walk and get plastered.  That might be a bad idea tonight.  Be sure to use a designated driver.  And if you have any immigrant friends who are not licensed to drive, don’t let them get behind the wheel! Continue reading→
