Fullerton P.D. victim Kelly Thomas will be remembered with an altar at the Art Walk on Saturday
Santa Ana’s Art Walk is going to go in a few new directions this Saturday, August 6. I am told that an altar to Kelly Thomas, the homeless man killed by the Fullerton Police Department, will be set up at the Santora Building. And, for the first time ever, there will be an effort to expand the Art Walk to the East End Promenade, which will be celebrating its grand opening on Saturday. The East End Promenade is on Spurgeon St. between 3rd & 4th Streets.
By the way, can anyone tell me why the media is not giving credit to the Friends for Fullerton’s Future blog for breaking the Kelly Thomas story? The OC Weekly and the Voice of OC have chimed in with accolades for what the editor of the FFF blog, Tony Bushala, did to keep this story alive – but the mainstream media has ignored him, for the most part, and at least one purportedly liberal blog not only ignored Tony they also gave credit to the wrong Fullerton Council Member. Tony’s ally on the Fullerton Council, Bruce Whitaker, was the first one to go after the Fullerton P.D. In fact Tony and his allies are now starting a recall to get rid of the retired cops on the Fullerton City Council, and maybe their lame Mayor, Dick Jones, too. Continue reading
Due to circumstances beyond our control the Focus event tonight with Doc Martin & Dj Heather has been moved to a new venue 3 blocks away from the Yost.
The Yost Theater won’t be open tonight after all, as the owners are still scrambling to comply with City of Santa Ana ordinances involving public safety, such as fire sprinklers and fire walls, according to the O.C. Register.
The show that was originally scheduled at the Yost, featuring Doc Martin and DJ Heather, will be moved elsewhere, according to this email I received tonight from the show’s promoter: Continue reading

IRVINE – The Orange County Great Park’s 2011 Flights and Sounds Summer Festival launches its fourth annual dance party and concert season this weekend. The fun begins August 5 with a theme, celebrating the City of Irvine’s 40th Anniversary featuring DJ HAPA, who will kick off the summer Friday night dance parties. On August 6 Grammy Award winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis will open the Saturday concert series with a mix of jazz, blues and funk. The City of Santa Ana spent hundreds of thousands starting up the Artists Village. Then they made tattoo shops, hookah bars and massage parlors illegal in the Downtown area. Now they have forced a gay bar that is opening up soon, called the Velvet Lounge, to go without male go-go dancers, according to the O.C. Register.
I don’t get it. If you are going to have an Artists Village shouldn’t you leave the prudishness at the door?
The argument I get from City Council loyalists is that Santa Ana is a family city, which is true to a certain extent but most families don’t venture into the Downtown area after dark. So why not let our hair down? Continue reading

The Santa Ana City Council’s Public Safety Committee is meeting on Tuesday, July 26, and the meeting promises to be an interesting one. The topics on the agenda, which is below, include discussion about a proposed C.U.P. (Conditional Use Permit) for the gay bar called the “Velvet Lounge,” which is supposed to open soon, and a Bail Bond Solicitation update (we wrote about that awhile ago – bail bondsmen are illegally soliciting for bails outside our jail, and most of these guys don’t even have businesses in town).
