El Sol Science and Arts Academy named a California Distinguished School

The El Sol Science and Arts Academy has been named a “California Distinguished School,” according to their Executive Director, Monique Daviss.

The 2010 California School Recognition Program (CSRP) directly focuses on California’s students and their entitlement to an equitable and rigorous education. Under the 2010 CSRP, the California Distinguished Schools Award identifies and honors those schools that have demonstrated educational excellence for all students and progress in narrowing the achievement gap.

In order to be invited to apply for Distinguished School honors, schools must meet a variety of eligibility criteria including designated federal and state accountability measures based on No Child Left Behind (NCLB), Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), and the Academic Performance Index (API) requirements. The Orange County High School of the Arts presents a Ballet Folklorico Conservatory Concert, called Recuerdos de Mexico, on May 1, at 7:30 p.m., at Segerstrom High School, located at 2301 W. MacArthur Boulevard, in Santa Ana.

OC Public Libraries joins in April 17 – May 23, 2010 for the 25th Anniversary of Imagination Celebration. Experience the power and colorful creativity of theatre, dance, music, film, literary and visual arts brought to you by an exciting collaboration of professional arts organizations, cities, schools, libraries, universities and community venues.

All branch libraries will display art by local children, and some branches will have art materials available so you can create art during your library visit. Great Park Wants Kids to Picture the Park
Free Imagination Celebration event gets kids to discover the park through arts, gardening and ecology crafts

IRVINE – The many aspects of the Orange County Great Park will come into focus with “Picture the Park,” an activity-filled event that helps kick of OC’s Imagination Celebration. The free family fun event is designed to entertain ages 5 – 12, but families are encouraged to create functional art together at numerous activity stations.

In the Farm & Food Lab, UC Extension Master Gardeners will encourage junior gardeners through art and planting projects. Team Kids will be on hand to demonstrate the water cycle and provide recycled-art craft activities. Other activities throughout the Park will encourage kids to “Picture the Park” through crafts. La Mission movie playing at the Block of Orange

 Have you heard of a movie called “La Mission?”  It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009, to much acclaim.  The privately financed movie stars Benjamin Bratt  and is written and directed by his brother, Peter Bratt.

The movie explores the lowrider culture in San Francisco, while delving into a story about a young man who comes out of the closet, to the chagrin of his tough father, who is raising him by himself.

“La Mission” opened this week in Los Angeles, and is now playing at the AMC Theater at the Block of Orange, located at 20 City Blvd. (BUY TICKETS) (714) 769-4288.

Calacas teams up with SolArt for Mexicali Relief, after 7.2 earthquake

In Southern Cali, last week’s Easter earthquake was a slow and easy roller. But to our hermanos in Mexicali where the epicenter of the 7.2 tremor was, the devastation took much more of a toll. Locally, SolArt and Calacas culture and clothing store will be collection donations to take down across the border this weekend. If you are in and around the Santa Ana area, you can drop off things like bottled water and toilet paper at Calacas during their operating hours all day Sunday. The store is located at 324 W. 4th Street in Santa Ana. Or you could drop an email those provided to the flyer above and arrange for a drop off with SolArt volunteers who will actually be taking the donated supplies down to Mexicali on Sunday.

Join us in the Fight Against Women’s Cancers. Kim Garcia will be participating and raising funds for the EIF/Revlon Run/Walk for Women’s Cancers. This event is being produced by Vaults Of Fortune and Hosted by Lorena Maae Insurance Agency.

The fundraising event will include Art, Wine & Breads and Information on Earthquake preparedness.  Featured Artist Amber Orosco will be displaying beautiful works of art.

All proceeds will go towards supporting Kim’s goal of $500 to the EIF/Revlon Run/Walk. All donations are tax deductible.

Santa Ana City Manager moves this year’s Fiestas Patrias to Sep. 18

“A downtown celebration honoring Mexico’s bicentennial that was initially set to kick off Sept. 11 and sparked a firestorm of protests has been moved to the following weekend.  The date change came at the request of the festivities’ promoters, Santa Ana City Manager Dave Ream said Thursday,” according to the O.C. Register.

Ream and his administrators were the ones who chose this date in the first place.  Alejandra Garcia Williams, who currently serves as the Consul of Mexico in Santa Ana, asked Ream to change the date.

Kudos to Garcia Williams for defusing the ridiculous racist protest against this event.  Why Ream chose Sept. 11 for this event in the first place is a real mystery.

This year’s Fiestas Patrias is going to be very special as the entire country of Mexico is currently celebrating 200 years of independence (200 años de independencia).  Click here for more information. Continue reading→

Mexicanisimo to host menudo fundraiser for Relampago del Cielo

 Santa Ana’s Relampago del Cielo is having a Menudo Breakfast Fundraiser on Sunday, April 18, from 9 am to 12 pm, at the Mexicanisimo Restaurant, located at 2325 First St., in Santa Ana.  A donation of $5 is requested.

Dancers will be performing, from the regions of Yucatan and Veracruz, at 11 am.  There will also be door prizes, including a Las Vegas getaway valued at $500 and a performance of Relampago del Cielo valued at $250.

Relámpago del Cielo Inc. (RDC) , a 501(c)3 non-profit organization is celebrating it’s 35th Anniversary. Enthralled by the music and movement learned in classes taught by Ms. Rosie Peña at Santa Ana College, a handful of her students resolved to join forces in expanding their newly discovered appreciation of the folklore of Mexico. Bring your family and friends to enjoy a fun filled day of crafts and a scavenger hunt this Saturday, April 3.

At 12 noon, the OC Historical Commission is sponsoring a screening of “Catch Me If You Can”, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, which was filmed at the Old Orange County Courthouse.

The OC Archives will be open for research and staff will be offering behind-the-scenes tours. Next door the Dr. Willella Howe-Waffle House will also be open for tours (please check-out their website for ticketing information). See you on April 3rd!

Architectural Walking Tour and OC Courthouse Downtown Architectural Walking Tour

Join us for an information-filled tour of historic downtown Santa Ana and learn more about our city. These tours coincide with our Open House events (noon to 4:00 pm) and are also a perfect prelude to the “first Saturday” arts openings at the downtown Artist Village on the same evenings.
