12th Annual Cesar E. Chavez State Holiday Celebration

Comprehensive California High School Drop Out Audit Findings Now Available

Audit, Conducted at Request of Latino Legislative Caucus, Shows Nearly 95,000 Students of the Class of 2010 Dropped Out.  Approximately 50,000 of Those Students Were Latinos.

SACRAMENTO – At the request of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, the California State Auditor conducted extensive research into the new reporting of high school graduation and dropout data by the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS). The report, High School Graduation and Dropout Data: California’s New Database May Enable the State to Better Serve Its High School Students Who Are at Risk of Dropping Out, was released yesterday. Republican Robert Hammond, a resident of Santa Ana, has withdrawn from the race for the 69th Assembly District, according to the OC Political blog.  There are now four Democrats vying in the open primary, but only two of them have a shot at winning in June. 

Santa Ana Couincil Member Michele Martinez has 13% of the vote, according to a poll conducted by the other leading Democratic candidate, Tom Daly, who currently is the O.C. Clerk-Recorder.  Daly has a quarter of the vote, according to his poll. Continue reading→

Food trucks aren’t making kids fat

One of my Democratic colleagues has introduced Assembly Bill 1678, which seeks to ban “mobile food vending” within 1,500 feet of elementary and secondary schools, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on school days. Without food trucks offering their fattening foods, the theory goes, kids will eat their carrots, obesity will vanish, and students will loiter less and spend more time in the library.

If only it were that simple. Statistically, children who watch the most hours of television, or log on to computers, have the highest incidence of obesity. Are we going to legislate time spent per day on technology? Studies also show that only about one-third of elementary-age children have daily physical education, and less than one-fifth of U.S. schools offer extracurricular sports. Are we going to increase physical education time when our students need every minute of cognitive instruction our financially challenged school districts can muster? And we all know that parents who eat diets high in saturated fats also have children who do the same. Are we going to start knocking on doors to check what’s for dinner? Continue reading→

A new phone poll of voters in the 69th Assembly District, conducted by Democratic candidate Tom Daly’s campaign, shows that newcomers Julio Perez  and Francisco Barragan need to drop out now, or they are going to jeopardize the election of a Latino to represent this heavily Latino district, which is currently represented by Jose Solorio.

I expected a good turnout at Santa Ana Council Member Michele Martinez’ fundraising event tonight, which was hosted at the home of Council Member Vince Sarmiento and his wife Eva.  And sure enough, the place was packed – but that was not the entire story.

For one thing, a lot of Republicans were there tonight, including past CRP Vice Chair Mario Rodriguez, who was a high-ranking official in Governor Schwarzenegger’s administration; Break Mayor Ron Garcia, who works with Martinez in NALEO (the National Association of Latino Elected Officials); MWD Trustee Brett Barbre; developer and consultant Steve Sheldon; and Santa Ana Council Member Carlos Bustamante. Santa Ana Council Member Vince Sarmiento, who is widely respected by both Democrats and Republicans, sent out a letter via email yesterday encouraging his supporters to back his colleague, Santa Ana Council Member Michele Martinez, for the 69th Assembly District.  Sarmiento and his wife are hosting a fundraiser for her on Thursday, Feb. 23.  Here is Sarmiento’s eloquent letter:

Solorio gives Daly $2K, but Martinez leads in fundraising in the 69th A.D.

The campaign finance reports are in, and the top fundraiser, of the four Democrats running for the 69th Assembly District, is Santa Ana Council Member Michele Martinez.  You can read her report here.

Ultra-liberal union shill Julio Perez came in at 117K and 70K cash at-hand.  If you subtract the $23K which he reported in the last reporting period, which was from Jan to June 2011, the he only raised $90K.  Click here to read his campaign finance report.

O.C. Clerk-Recorder Tom Daly only raised $54K.  It looks like his past supporters are realizing he isn’t running much of a campaign – and he still has no campaign website!  Click here to read his campaign finance report.  Note that Assemblyman Jose Solorio has sold out the people of Santa Ana by donating $2K to Daly!  (But in fairness he also donated $2K to Martinez – we may not agree on Daly but at least we agree that Perez is an awful fit for the district). Committed to raising taxes – union hack Julio Perez, Assembly Speaker John Perez and labor boss Teferi Gebre

Moderation isn’t working anymore for Orange County’s labor leaders, according to the Voice of OC.  When has this far-left bunch ever been moderate?  It is true however that this year they have seemingly lost their minds – lining up behind union consultant Julio Perez for the 69th Assembly District, behind the crazed rantings of labor boss Teferi Gebre, who describes his political views, on Facebook, as “very liberal.”  LOL!  Gebre lives in Carlsbad – a city with an $85K median income.  How 1% of him!

Backing Perez is such a bad idea that both Assemblyman Jose Solorio and State Senator Lou Correa, as well as DPOC Chairman Frank Barbaro, have had to remind local Democrats that the 69th is a moderate district.  Of course when the Democrats hold their meetings at a union hall, you can’t expect much in the way of moderation.  And so Perez is now bragging that he won a strong majority of support from Democratic Party Delegates during a Pre-Primary Endorsement Conference held this weekend.  Of course he did!  Would you expect much else from these liberal nuts?
