Details are now coming out about “Prominent Democratic campaign treasurer Kindee Durkee” who was finally arrested by the FBI this weekend — more than four years after the Chronicle reported complaints that she was involved in a fake “Californians for Obama” campaign that ripped off unsuspecting donors, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The Chronicle also noted that Durkee was listed as treasurer for a “California for Obama” campaign that sold itself as raising money for the campaign of then-Senator Barack Obama. It scooped up thousands in checks from Californians through promotions ranging from celebrity-studded cruises to campaign office “grand openings,” the Chronicle reported in July 2007. Kinde Durkee of Burbank-based Durkee and Associates, a prominent Democratic campaign treasurer who works for federal, state and O.C. lawmakers including U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Rep. Loretta Sanchez and state legislators Lou Correa and Jose Solorio, has been arrested by the FBI on suspicion of mail fraud, according to The Orange County Register.
State Sen. Lou Correa of Santa Ana told the Register the FBI notified him late Friday that he was one of many victims. Correa said he believes he has lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds. Durkee had been his campaign treasurer since 1995, according to the Huffington Post.
Correa quickly posted a response on Facebook: Continue reading→

Assemblyman Jose Solorio is at it again. This time he has proposed a bill, AB 947, that would “cost the California workers’ compensation system an additional $200 to $210 million a year, a legislative fiscal analysis said,” according to the Sacramento Business Journal.
Currently, a California worker can receive payment for a temporary disability caused at work for 104 weeks within a five-year period. Solorio’s AB 947 would allow temporary disability benefits for up to 240 weeks – nearly five years, according to the O.C. Register. Continue reading→
Assemblyman Jose Solorio’s bio says he grew up “working in the cotton fields.” Like Solorio I grew up doing manual labor, with my father, who owned a small janitorial service. Now Solorio is trying to pass a new law, A.B. 350, that will in fact affect janitorial laborers.
Dubbed the “Displaced Property Service Employee Opportunity Act,” AB 350 forces companies that provide building security, maintenance, window cleaning or food services to retain the employees of the previous service contractor for 90 days and then offer those employees continued employment unless their performance is unsatisfactory, according to CalWatchdog.
What this proposed law boils down to is that companies that provide certain services, and replace other contractors will have to hire their employees. I remember my dad won a lot of jobs by replacing ineffective janitorial service providers. Dad would have had a cow if he had to hire employees who did a bad job for their previous employer! Assemblyman Jose Solorio’s Communication Director, Carol Chamberlain, contacted me today with news that Solorio had in fact responded to mounting criticism of his proposed bill, AB 350, in a letter sent to the Sacramento Bee. I am reprinting that letter below.
AB 350 Provides Fairness for Low Wage Workers
By: State Assemblyman Jose Solorio, Anaheim
The Bee editorial, Union Bill would tie hands of employers, misses the mark, includes factual errors and is biased. Anyone knowledgeable of AB 350 and who read this opinion would recognize the voice of the highly financed, anti-union alliance feeding inaccuracies to a welcoming Bee editorial board and other newspaper boards throughout the state. The chisme has it that Orange County Clerk-Recorder Tom Daly is going to run for the 69th Assembly District, a seat currently held by Assemblyman Jose Solorio, who if memory serves correct employs Daly’s wife.
Daly is the former Mayor of Anaheim. I am told that “business interests” want him to run as they don’t like OC Labor Political Director Julio Perez, who like Daly hails from Anaheim.
Where does that leave Santa Ana Councilwoman Michele Martinez? She announced she was running this week. Continue reading→
Santa Ana Councilwoman Michele Martinez made an interesting announcement this morning on her Facebook page, “Good Morning! I wanted to share some great news with all of you. In the next week or so I will officially declare my candidacy for the 69 Assembly District. Michele Martinez.”
I have been tracking this story for weeks. For awhile it looked like Councilman Vince Sarmiento was going to run but his wife put the kibosh on that. Then it looked like Councilman Sal Tinajero was going to run – but now it is Martinez who is going to run for Assemblyman Jose Solorio’s 69th Assembly District, when he terms out in 2012. Santa Ana will continue to dominate the 69th Assembly District, in the latest redistricting proposal that is now headed for public comment. The new district map includes all of Santa Ana, for the most part, and just a piece of Anaheim.
The Democrats ought to be able to hang on to this seat easily – and odds are that a Santa Ana Council Member will be following the incumbent, Jose Solorio, to Sacramento. Continue reading→
The final proposed redistricting of the 34th State Senate District is now headed for the public comment phase, but I doubt it is going to change much. The new district has changed in shocking fashion. No longer does it stretch all the way up to Fullerton. Instead it has grown westward and now includes a chunk of the coast, including Seal Beach and part of Huntington Beach.
The new district has a slight Democratic voter edge, according to the O.C. Register. And it appears to include all of Little Saigon, including other communities with large Vietnamese communities in Fountain Valley and southwest Santa Ana. Continue reading→

I am hearing that there is a chance that Santa Ana Council Member Vince Sarmiento may not run for the 69th Assembly District after all. Apparently it is going to be up to his wife – and as he has a successful law practice and young children she may in the end not go for it.
The incumbent legislator, Jose Solorio, is terming out – in 2012. His open seat will be a rare opportunity to elect someone decent. Continue reading→

Sarmiento is going to be running for Solorio’s 69th Assembly District seat in 2012. Right now it looks like OC Labor political Director Julio Perez, a complete unknown, will be getting hammered by Sarmiento in the Democratic primary.
