The Santa Ana 2012 Fiestas Patrias parade ran for about an hour and a half today, starting at 4 pm. I got there a few minutes late and missed Mayor Miguel Pulido, who was apparently riding in a Wells Fargo stagecoach, but I caught everyone else.
Above you wil find a slideshow of the politicians and the floats, and everything else. The parade featured men on horseback, someone in a bear costume, native dancers, and even a couple of ninjas.

Solorio is a big fan of white male politicians
Assemblyman Jose Solorio wants to force insurance companies in California to buy services from minority owned businesses. He sent out a press release today announcing that “AB 53, authored by State Assemblyman Jose Solorio (D-Anaheim), has passed the Legislature and awaits the Governor’s signature. The legislation would encourage California’s insurance industry to consider diversity when entering into procurement contracts.”
The release also indicated that “Specifically, AB 53 requires major California insurers to file a report with the Insurance Commissioner regarding their outreach and procurement practices involving businesses owned by women, minorities, and disabled veterans.” Continue reading

The hard hats aren’t with Tom Daly now!
The OC and CA Labor Federations held a meeting this week to meet the candidates for office here in Orange County. As one might expect, Tom Daly, the Democratic nominee for the 69th Assembly District failed to show up but he asked for their endorsement anyway. It turned out to be an epic fail for Daly.
Daly was completely rejected – and he should be. This two-faced hack says one thing to the Labor Federation then he goes over to the OC Taxpayers Association and says something else altogether. There is evidence, for example, that Daly has supported privatizing government jobs. Well, the CA Labor Federation figured it out and gave him the boot. Assemblyman Jose Solorio chose not to run against Supervisor Janet Nguyen in November, but he announced this afternoon, via email, that he is running for Area One of the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Education.
Solorio’s wife is a public school teacher, I believe at Santa Ana’s Valley High School. This would seem to be a good fit for him but it is a part-time job. He has not yet announced what his other employment plans will be.
One hangup for Solorio is that he voted in the past year to de-fund the County of Orange to the tune of about fifty million per year. He was promised by Assembly Speaker John Perez that the State Legislature would find a way to return that money to the County of Orange. That never happened and the County ended up in a lawsuit with the State of California. If the State prevails the money will have to come out of the County’s education budget. Continue reading
Santa Ana Planning Commissioner Eric Alderete has announced that he will campaign for Ward 3 on the Santa Ana City Council, which is currently held by Council Member Carlos Bustamante, who was arrested last week on a plethora of sex crime and public theft charges. Ward 3 opens up in November, although Bustamante could still run for reelection.

Democratic 72nd Assembly District candidate Joe Dovinh, who came in third in the Open Primary on June 5, has announced that he will be running for the 34th State Senate District in 2014, in an email message he sent to supporters today. The 34th S.D. is currently held by Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana).
Dovinh lives in Garden Grove, which appears to be entirely in the 34th. Other cities in the 34th include Santa Ana, Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Westminster, Midway City, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, and part of Anaheim. According to the final voter registration data for the 34th, 19.4% of the voters have Asian surnames and 24% of the voters in the district have Latino surnames. Continue reading
