A Santa Ana man who allegedly killed a woman with his van has died in custody

Nelson Ward Jr., a 62-year-old Santa Ana resident, won’t be charged with murder after allegedly runninv over a woman in a hotel parking lot in Buena Park, back in 2015, because he died in mid-November while in custody, of natural causes, according to the O.C. Register.

Ward Jr. was charged with murder as well as assault with a deadly weapon or instrument likely to produce great bodily injury, after he allegedly killed 32-year-old Jessica Carvajal at about 1:20 a.m., on Sep. 12, 2015, in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn at 7000 Beach Blvd., in Buena Park. ORANGE COUNTY REPORTS WEST NILE VIRUS RELATED FATALITY

West Nile Virus Activity throughout the County is Increasing

(Santa Ana) – An 80 year-old Buena Park resident died last week with complications of West Nile virus (WNV) infection. Test results received this week confirmed the diagnosis. This is the first human death associated with WNV infection for this year’s season in Orange County.

““West Nile virus activity tends to peak in August and September in Orange County, but we continue to have cases occur throughout the fall,” said Dr. Eric G. Handler, County Health Officer. “Individuals can take precautionary measures to limit exposure to the West Nile virus. MAN TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR MURDERING WOMAN BY INTENTIONALLY DRIVING INTO HER WITH MINIVAN AND INJURING HER BOYFRIEND

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A man is scheduled to be arraigned today for murdering a woman by intentionally driving his minivan into her and also injuring her boyfriend. Nelson Ward, 60, Santa Ana, is charged with one felony count of murder and one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 28 years to life in state prison. Ward is being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned today in Department CJ-1, Central Jail Santa Ana. The time is to be determined.

On Sept. 12, 2015, Ward is accused of meeting 32-year-old Jessica Lynn Brown Carvajal and her boyfriend 51-year-old Robert Shore in Buena Park. The defendant is accused of inviting Carvajal and her boyfriend into his van and spending the day driving around to various locations and drinking alcohol. At some point during the day, the defendant is accused of sleeping in the back of his van and giving John Doe permission to drive while Carvajal was sitting in the passenger seat. Continue reading→

LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPUTY TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR THREATENING AND ASSAULTING WOMAN INCLUDING LIGHTING HER HAIR ON FIRE

FULLERTON – A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) deputy is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow for threatening and assaulting a woman including lighting her hair on fire. Alejandro Flores, 33, Buena Park, is charged with three felony counts of domestic battery with corporal injury, two felony counts of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, one felony count of aggravated assault, one felony count of criminal threats, one felony count of dissuading a witness by force or threat, and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace or violence with sentencing enhancement allegations for great bodily injury inflicted during domestic violence and the personal use of a firearm. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years and eight months in state prison. He is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow, July 7, 2015, at 8:30 a.m. in Department N-3, North Justice Center, Fullerton.

At the time of the crime the defendant was a LASD deputy and was in a romantic relationship with Jane Doe. The defendant lived with the victim and a child relative under two years old in Buena Park. Continue reading→

CONTRACT TRUCK DRIVER CONVICTED OF ILLEGALLY SELLING OAKLEY EYEWEAR INTENDED FOR SOLDIERS IN U.S. MILITARY ON EBAY AFTER REPEATEDLY STEALING SHIPMENTS FROM DHL PROCESSING CENTERS

FULLERTON – A contract truck driver was convicted today of illegally selling Oakley eyewear intended for soldiers in the U.S. Military on eBay after repeatedly stealing shipments from DHL processing centers. Luis Albert Quintanilla, 47, Buena Park, pleaded guilty to 10 felony counts of grand theft with sentencing enhancements for aggravated white collar crime over $100,000 and property loss over $200,000. Quintanilla is expected to be sentenced to three years and four months in state prison, $299,000 restitution, and pay a $580,000 fine at his sentencing May 4, 2015, at 8:30 a.m. in Department N-12, North Justice Center, Fullerton.

At the time of the crimes, Quintanilla worked as an independent contract truck driver for DHL. Between October 2012 and May 2013, Quintanilla stole 10 shipments of Oakley eyewear from DHL processing centers intended for delivery to appropriate United States Postal Service facilities. He auctioned the eyewear on eBay from his home under the name “havetime2sell” by posting photos of the merchandise with the packaging box to emphasize their authenticity. Continue reading→

Arrest made in fatal hit and run accident

Subject: Arrest Made in Fatal Hit & Run

On November 1, 2014 at 9:10 p.m. Daniela Palacios, 44, of Anaheim was struck by a pick-up truck as she rode her bicycle near the intersection of La Palma Avenue and Magnolia Avenue in Anaheim. After the collision, the pick-up fled the scene and the suspect remained at-large. Palacios was transported to a local trauma center and succumbed to her injuries shortly after 1:00 a.m. on November 2, 2014.

Since the fatal hit and run, Anaheim Police Traffic Investigators have been working to locate the suspect vehicle and its driver. With the assistance of Orange County Crime Stoppers, Junior Rigoberto Lopez, 30, of Buena Park was arrested this morning at the Anaheim Police Department. He is suspected to be the driver of the vehicle that struck Palacios and he has been booked at our temporary detention facility for felony hit and run. His bail is $50,000. Continue reading→

Service Animal Training Offers Free Rides for Dogs and Owners

Event helps service animals and handlers learn to navigate public transit

ORANGE – A free service animal training day, hosted by the Orange County Transportation Authority and Knott’s Berry Farm, is back for the second time this year.

The training day is set for Saturday, Oct. 4 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fullerton Park and Ride, 3000 W. Orangethorpe Ave. Participants can begin checking in at 7:30 a.m. to receive their Knott’s Berry Farm wristbands. Participants will enjoy unlimited practice boarding, riding and exiting an OCTA bus with their service animals. The round-trip training bus will depart every 20 minutes and will follow a special bus route for training day attendees. Trainers are encouraged to ride multiple times. Continue reading→

NEWS ADVISORY: Dogs Will Pack OCTA Buses For Day of Training

WHAT: Dogs riding buses. More than 100 service animals and their handlers are expected to attend a unique training event on April 5 that will help them get accustomed to navigating the public bus system.

Handlers will work with their therapy and service animals – including Golden Retrievers, Labradors, poodles and more – continually boarding, riding and exiting an Orange County Transportation Authority bus so they can get familiar with large groups of people, loud noises and unfamiliar sights and sounds. Participants also will get access to the Knott’s Berry Farm theme park, where they will encounter the sounds of whizzing rollercoasters, children running toward their favorite rides and plenty of other activity. HOMELESS MAN CONVICTED OF HOME BURGLARIES STARTING WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT OF SLEEPING 10-YEAR-OLD GIRL

SANTA ANA – A homeless man was convicted today of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl who was asleep in her home and a string of residential burglaries in Buena Park. Joel Solis Aguirre, 24, Fullerton, was found guilty by a jury of one felony count of residential burglary, one felony count each of assault with intent to commit a sexual offense during a residential burglary, lewd act upon a child under 14 years old, attempted kidnapping to commit a sexual offense, attempted kidnapping for child molesting and attempted residential burglary. The sentencing allegations and enhancements for having a non-accomplice present during three residential burglaries and committing a lewd act during the commission of a burglary were found true. On Aug. 21, 2013, the defendant pleaded guilty to two counts of residential burglary in this case. Aguirre faces a maximum sentence of life in state prison and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration at his sentencing Nov. 8, 2013, at 9:00 a.m. in Department C-29, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana.
