Naseem Aflakian and Bruce Marsh of Santa Ana’s exclusive Floral Park neighborhood are looking to open an American Bistro called the “Little Sparrow,” that will “serve great bakery items for breakfast, crafted sandwiches for lunch, and candlelight dinners along with cocktails,” according to the Eat In OC Blog.

Workers for a Santa Ana painting company whose president’s San Clemente home was picketed last year, leading to a San Clemente ordinance limiting such demonstrations, have succeeded in dumping their union!
“The past year has seen a series of petitions and legal maneuvering. The home of GPS Painting & Wallcovering President Eliot Schneider was picketed repeatedly; in September, the San Clemente City Council adopted a disputed ordinance requiring that pickets targeting a residence stay at least 200 feet away.” according to the O.C. Solorio is a big fan of white male politicians
Assemblyman Jose Solorio wants to force insurance companies in California to buy services from minority owned businesses. He sent out a press release today announcing that “AB 53, authored by State Assemblyman Jose Solorio (D-Anaheim), has passed the Legislature and awaits the Governor’s signature. The legislation would encourage California’s insurance industry to consider diversity when entering into procurement contracts.”
The release also indicated that “Specifically, AB 53 requires major California insurers to file a report with the Insurance Commissioner regarding their outreach and procurement practices involving businesses owned by women, minorities, and disabled veterans.” Continue reading
In the end the Santa Ana PBID tax may finally die – but it won’t be because our City Council had the guts to get rid of it. Instead it is on its last legs because some Council Members are on vacation, others cannot vote on PBID matters due to conflicts of interest, and Council Member Carlos Bustamante is refusing to attend public sessions of the City Council, according to the O.C. Register.
It is too bad our City Council did not have the guts to get rid of the PBID outright. And it is sad that the Downtown businesses are going to get stuck paying this tax again for another year. But I do hope that this will prove to be the end of the PBID. Continue reading

U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez is scheduled to visit newly-opened small businesses in downtown Santa Ana on Tuesday, August 7 from 2pm to 5pm. The business visits will begin at 2:15pm at the “Road Less Traveled” store located at 125 N. Broadway, Ste. C, in Downtown Santa Ana.

This week, Vital Link OC, an organization that works with Orange County high school students, received a $31,000 donation from employees of Santa-Ana-based Corinthian Colleges. The proceeds were raised through a silent auction at Corinthian’s annual employee picnic last month.

The U.S. Small Business Administration reports that many small businesses think they are too small to compete globally. However, 97 percent of all exporters are small businesses. SANTA ANA, CA (July 5, 2012) – The City of Santa Ana is making its final call to new and current business owners to sign up for the Business Tax Amnesty Program. The deadline for participating in this one time only program is Wednesday, July 31, 2012.
Anyone doing business or registered as a business or corporation in the City of Santa Ana must have a business license. Existing licensed businesses that may have underreported or misreported their gross receipts or other assessment criteria qualify if they act fast in order to avoid paying penalties and interest on current and back year taxes.
