A new national study has revealed that the Santa Ana area is lagging in jobs growth, compared to many other cities.
We have explored this issue before. A previous study found that Santa Ana is one of the most expensive cities to do business in, here in Orange County. And we have the highest water rates in Orange County, as well as the highest property taxes, due to an abundance of municipal bonds.
If our city leaders want to help create more jobs, they need to lower the cost of doing business in this city, and make it easier for new businesses to open up.
Someimes our own residents are the ones who kill jobs. A Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant tried to open up here last year, only to face a lawsuit filed by a number of Santa Ana’s “Usual Suspects.” The restaurant owners went elsewhere and now the food court that lost this franchise is struggling to survive. I visited Santa Ana’s Cinco de Mayo Fiesta on Saturday, May 1, and took the pictures embedded above. The event was held on Santa Ana’s historic Calle Cuatro, or 4th Street.
The event was typically commercialized. I did not see much in the way of historical exhibits, with the exception of a tent with exhibits about the Mexican State of Michoacan.
And as we reported earlier, the biggest story was Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido forcing his opponent’s supporters to take down their “Al Amezcua for Mayor” banners off the booth they paid for. Read about that by clicking here.
“The City of Santa Ana has received an application for the Park View at Town and Country Manor project, proposing to construct additional structures and facilities within the existing Town and Country Manor campus. The proposed project would add 174 independent living units to the existing campus. Also constructed would be a new expanded entry lobby, a covered pool area and fitness center proposed within an aquatic and wellness center, modifications to the existing parking lots, and creation of a main entrance driveway, connecting the two existing entrances on Memory Lane and Lawson Way and having one lane in each direction,” according to the City of Santa Ana’s Planning and Building website.
The Santa Ana Planning commission was presented with an environmental impact report for this proposed EIGHT story building for assisted living to be built next to the current Town and Country space. You can read the entire report online at this link. The site is not far from the CityPlace center.

An Afternoon with Marvin Olasky
An opportunity to interact with the Editor in Chief of World Magazine. Marvin Olasky is spending a day at Trinity Law School and reserved 3pm-5pm on Friday, April 23rd to address the Trinity Law School community and answer their questions on a wide variety of topics.
Dr. Olasky is most known as the Editor in Chief of WORLD magazine and currently serves as Provost of The King’s College in New York City. He also chaired an advisory committee on religion and public policy for George W. Bush when he was Governor of Texas. He is the author of more than 20 books. His books include The Religions Next Door, Compassionate Conservatism, The American Leadership Tradition, Tragedy of American Compassion, and The Prodigal Press: The Anti-Christian Bias of American News Media. He has published more than 800 articles on journalism, history, the fight against poverty, religion, sports and other matters. His most recent book coming out in March, Unmerited Mercy.

Forgiveness is Good Business in Santa Ana

Forgiveness, it seems, makes good business sense.
Since enacting a business license tax amnesty program at the beginning of February, the City of Santa Ana has collected more that $500,000 from 1,300 unlicensed businesses that did not report or underreported business tax.
“We sent out letters to about 15,000 businesses that may not have known that they need a license to do business in the city,” said Christine Duarte, Treasury Manager for Santa Ana. “This is all about coming clean with the city.”
She estimated there are about 25,000 businesses operating in Santa Ana.
Anyone transacting and conducting business in Santa Ana is required to obtain a business license. Collected fees go into the city’s general fund and are used to support public safety services such as police and fire. Continue reading

Santa Ana dentist Dr. Art Lomeli was one of several downtown Santa Ana merchants who met with Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido and Santa Ana City Manager Dave Ream to plan this year’s Cinco de Mayo festivities, according to the Miniondas newspaper.
This had to be an awkward experience for Lomeli, who is actively campaigning to oust Pulido and replace him with local attorney Alfredo Amezcua. Another merchant who was at the meeting, Sam Romero, is also part of Amezcua’s “SACrED” organization.
This year’s Santa Ana Cinco de Mayo festivities will start on Saturday, May 1, and continue on May 2.
