Mental health care for America’s veterans remains one of the great challenges facing Southern California. A new USC study released in February found that nearly 20% of Orange County veterans had made a plan to die by suicide; nearly half of those considering suicide did not receive help; and that 44% of post-9/11 veterans had PTSD. Councilman Benavides returns to KidWorks to serve as a Director

Santa Ana Councilman David Benavides has been named Executive Director of KidWorks, a Santa Ana-based nonprofit that now serves over 800 children, teens and parents through weekly programs and over 4,000 community members annually from three learning centers, according to OC Metro Magazine.

This is not Benavides’ first go-around at KidWorks. According to his official bio, “During his college years, he was introduced to KidWorks, a Santa Ana based non-profit organization which focuses on mentoring and empowering at-risk youth and families in some of the most under-resourced neighborhoods of Orange County. Initially moving to Santa Ana for an 8-week internship with KidWorks, David later became the Director of the non-profit for over six years. During his tenure, David prepared the organization for growth and later continued providing leadership as Board Chairman for over five years.” Continue reading→

Trinity Law School graduate to serve with major human rights organization

(Santa, Ana, CA) – Trinity Law School 2014 graduate, Angie Zetterquist, has been appointed as Legal Fellow for the International Justice Mission (IJM). She will be serving the organization in Southeast Asia for one year.

“This is a life-changing transition for me,” says Zetterquist. “Armed with my Trinity law degree and having passed the California Bar, I will be assisting and learning from the IJM legal staff as they plead the cases of the victims of sex trafficking and prosecute the perpetrators in the local court system.” Continue reading→

Jumpstart at UCI Annual Spring Literacy Event to Bring Books to Life to Encourage Early Childhood Reading Habits

WHAT: More than 450 families from across Orange County are expected to attend Jumpstart’s free annual Spring Literacy event on Saturday, March 7, 10 a.m. at the Heritage Museum in Santa Ana. The exciting event brings books to life with story-themed booths such as the Giving Tree, readings from children’s authors, activities such as a Cat in the Hat sack race, science experiments and more to encourage an interest in reading among preschool age children. Jumpstart will give more than 1,000 free books to children who attend the event. Nurses from Santa Ana Unified School District will be present as well to provide free basic health screenings for children. Continue reading→

FORMER OFFICE MANAGER TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR EMBEZZLING MONEY FROM CATHOLIC SCHOOL FUNDRAISING PROGRAM

SANTA ANA – A former office manager is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow for embezzling money from a Catholic school’s fundraising program. Adela Maria Tapia, 40, Tustin, is charged with two felony counts of grand theft by embezzlement, 13 felony counts of money laundering with sentencing enhancement allegations for aggravated white collar crime over $100,000, and property loss of over $200,000. If convicted, Tapia faces a maximum sentence of 14 years and four months in state prison. The People will request that she be held on over $438,000 bail and must prove that the money comes from a legal and legitimate source before posting bond at her arraignment tomorrow, Feb. 25, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana.

In September 2006, Tapia was hired as the scrip card coordinator at the Holy Family Cathedral School (HFCS) in Orange. The scrip card program is utilized by HFCS to raise funds for the operating costs of the school by selling scrip cards, which act similarly to gift cards, to school families or parishioners at face value. HFCS purchases scrip cards at a discount and their profit is based on the difference between the purchase value and sale value of the scrip cards sold. The scrip card program raises approximately $200,000 for the school each year. Continue reading→

Support Santa Ana’s historic Boy Scouts Troop 28, at a pancake breakfast on Sunday, February 8, 2014, from 8 to 10 am, at the Santa Ana United Methodist Church located at 2121 N. Grand Ave., in Santa Ana, next to Sierra Intermediate School.

Santiago Elementary’s RAK Club Shows Kindness to Needy Animals

Santiago Elementary School’s Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Club, which is comprised of 30 5th grade scholars, can celebrate the success of their most recent project – “A Cause for Paws.”

Each trimester, the RAK Club ambassadors vote on a community service project to promote school-wide that will help all the students, parents and staff at Santiago practice kindness. On October 31, 2014, our City was stricken with grief and tragedy when three beautiful teenage girls, Andrea Gonzalez, Lexandra and Lexi Perez were struck and killed by a speeding motorist.

Our citizens and police personnel came together to help us deal with this tragedy and start the healing process. A monetary assistance fund was set up on behalf of the Santa Ana Police Officers Association Widows & Orphans Fund. The outpouring of support for both families was overwhelming. Continue reading→

Riverview neighbors celebrate their 7th Annual Posadas

Residents in Santa Ana’s Riverview Neighborhood have been making a difference in their community by celebrating the Posadas Navideñas for the past four years. The Posadas Navideñas is a traditional Mexican reenactment of the search for lodging that Mary and Joseph did nine days before the birth of Jesus.

The Gallardo family in Riverview schedules a night for the Posada to be held at their home, starting on the 16th of December and finishing on the 24th of December, which is called Noche Buena.

The founder of this event, Manuel Gallardo, along with his family and neighbors continue to preserve this wonderful and beloved holiday tradition and culture. This is their 7th year doing this wonderful event. Continue reading→

Latino Health Access Tamalada set for December 19

Latino Health Access welcomes the holiday season with its annual Tamalada or tamale party. They serve a healthy version of this Latin American wrapped corn meal that is low calorie and lard free. The tamales will be served with beans, salad and a drink and entertainment will be provided as well.

The Tamalada event is set for December 19, 2014, from 5 to 9 pm, at 450 W. 4th St., Suite 130, in Santa Ana.
