When word got out that Irvine’s Newsong Church was in escrow to buy the landmark Santora building in Downtown Santa Ana, the artists community in our Downtown Artists Village area erupted.
A group of artists concerned about the sale of downtown Santa Ana’s Santora building to Newsong Church said that City Councilman David Benavides’ attendance at the church’s services should preclude him from serving on an ad hoc committee examining the sale, according to the Voice of OC.
The Voice of OC also reported that “Some artists suspect that Benavides, who is a real estate agent, has a financial interest in the sale. They question whether Benavides is representing the artists’, the city’s or the church’s interests on the committee. He appeared in a video about the building and the city made for the Newsong congregation.” Continue reading
The artists at Downtown Santa Ana’s Santora Building have no idea what they missed out on when they rejected the proposed purchase of that building by the Newsong Church. I found out today that they missed out on more than they could have imagined.
A few weeks ago I approached Pastor Andy Quient, my minister at Santa Ana’s First Baptist Church – a historic congregation that first met in 1872. I knew that Newsong’s minister, Dave Gibbons, had expressed a desire to minister in Santa Ana. I had a feeling that he still felt the same way. I visited the former Crystal Cathedral today (it is now knows as Christ Cathedral), where throngs of mostly young Koreans and other believers came together to listen to the ministry of Instructor Man Hee Lee, a self-avowed expert on the Book of Revelation.
There had been some consternation in the week leading up to the event as a number of evangelical Christians complained that Lee is the head of a cult. One woman at today’s service even ran up to the front of the church and started yelling. She was quickly removed although Lee asked that she be allowed to speak – in the lobby. Continue reading

For the first time since the Church of Scientology opened its doors on June 2, 2012, this past weekend, it held its first community event – a Fashion Show in honor of The Way to Happiness. 178 people participated in and attended the first event.

Click here to download that list – and find out where you can buy safe and sane fireworks in Santa Ana. The fireworks booths will be open from July 1-4.
Take a look at the list and you can easily identify the non-profit organizations that run each of these booths. Now you can go buy fireworks from a specific non-profit that you want to support. The fireworks sales mean a lot to these organizations and often provide a substantial amount of their annual funding. You will also note that the list is organized by the different fireworks manufacturers, in case you like a specific brand of fireworks.

Santa Ana’s oldest Protestant Church, the historic First Baptist Church, is once again hosting an Independence Day Celebration this Sunday, July 1, at 11 am.
There will be a church service at 11 am, followed by the annual 4th of July Picnic. Bring your friends, family and don’t forget the neighbor’s kids!

Orange County Welcomes Church of Scientology to Historic Home
Santa Ana, California • June 2, 2012
On Saturday, June 2, city and state dignitaries joined thousands of Scientologists in downtown Santa Ana to dedicate the new Church of Scientology of Orange County.
The Church’s new home, located at 505 North Sycamore Street, most recently served as the Santa Ana Performing Arts and Event Center. The 48,000 square foot building was originally constructed in 1931 as the Santa Ana Masonic Lodge. It remains one of Orange County’s finest examples of Art Deco architecture and is listed on the city, state and national registers of historic places. The Church of Scientology faithfully restored and preserved the structure, including its iconic facade anchored by a six-story central tower. The Church further returned the building’s ornate interiors to their former glory, from the alabaster chandeliers and hand-painted ceilings to the carved mahogany staircases. The landmark third-floor ballroom once again stands as a gathering place for the community, serving as the grand Chapel and auditorium venue for parishioners and people of all faiths in Orange County. St. Barbara’s Catholic Church, in Santa Ana, has been caught promoting the political campaign of Ken Nguyen, a Santa Ana Parks and Recreation Commissioner, who is running for the Orange County Board of Education, in Area One, which includes the City of Santa Ana.
Repeated phone calls have been made to the church officials and to the Orange County Catholic Dioscese, but to date the signs are still all over the church’s property. This is illegal and puts the church at risk of losing their tax exempt status, according to the IRS:
