Why aren’t there more women elected in Santa Ana?

It is hard to believe that the Santa Ana Unified School District’s Board of Education, which consists of five Trustees,  includes only one woman – longtime Trustee Audrey Noji.  Or that the Santa Ana City Council only has two women – Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez and Council Member Michele Martinez.  After November that number will be down to one, as Alvarez is termed out.  There are five men on the Santa Ana City Council.

What is up with that?  Figure that over half of our electorate must be made up of women.  Are they voting?  Are they voting for men?  Are there not enough women running for office in Santa Ana? Continue reading→

Politicians, ninjas and a bear show up at the 2012 Fiestas Patrias parade

The Santa Ana 2012 Fiestas Patrias parade ran for about an hour and a half today, starting at 4 pm.  I got there a few minutes late and missed Mayor Miguel Pulido, who was apparently riding in a Wells Fargo stagecoach, but I caught everyone else.

Above you wil find a slideshow of the politicians and the floats, and everything else.  The parade featured men on horseback, someone in a bear costume, native dancers, and even a couple of ninjas.

Robert Hammond, promoting the GOP

Orange County’s Democrats are generally clueless, but this past June they were particularly out of sorts.  They inexplicably gave Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen a free pass, allowing her to focus on electing her fellow Republican, and gay-basher, Robert Hammond as he won a seat on the O.C. Department of Education’s Board of Trustees.

And the Democrats managed to fumble away Orange County’s most Latino seat, allowing it to go to Orange County Clerk-Recorder Tom Daly, who has since been charged with sexual harassment in the workplace.  If they had gotten behind Santa Ana Council Member Michele Martinez she might have prevailed in June.  Instead organized labor put up their guy, Julio Perez, splitting the Latino vote and allowing Daly to prevail. Loretta Sanchez to host Job Hunters Boot Camp in Anaheim on 8/8

U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez is hosting a half-day workshop for job seekers at the Anaheim Downtown Community Center this Wednesday, August 8, 2012, from 8:30am to 1:00pm.

The “Job Hunters Boot Camp” will feature workshops on interviewing skills and resume writing, along with a “one-on-one resume critique” component to help attendees fine-tune their resumes. The event will also include resource tables from community agencies that may assist job seekers with various services. Sanchez hosting a free workshop on doing business abroad on Thursday

U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez is hosting a free small business workshop “Expanding your Markets: Doing Business Abroad” on Thursday, July 26, 2012, from 8:00am to 11:00am, at the Rancho Santiago Community College District, located at 2323 N. Broadway St., in Santa Ana.

The U.S. Small Business Administration reports that many small businesses think they are too small to compete globally. However, 97 percent of all exporters are small businesses. Council candidate Onofre now embracing her Republican identity

Carlos Bustamante is the last Republican left on the Santa Ana City Council.  And his political career appears to be done, as he is facing numerous felony charges of sex crimes and public theft.  The dwindling Republicans in Santa Ana may however have a new champion – Karina Onofre, the young candidate who is running for the Ward currently represented by Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez.

That Onofre is a Republican may have escaped the attention of Dan Chmielewski, the editor of the Liberal OC, who introduced Onofre to his readers in a post a few months ago that described her as “a 29-year-old moderate who is liberal on some issues, Libertarian on others and fiscally conservative.”   Continue reading→

SANTA ANA TEENSPACE TO HOST CONGRESSWOMAN LORETTA SANCHEZ AND SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE FREDERICK P. AGUIRRE

SANTA ANA, CA (July 10, 2012) – On Saturday, July 14, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. the Santa Ana Public Library will host Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez and Judge Frederick P. Aguirre during its weekly Teen Civics program. The program will consist of both the Congresswoman and Judge speaking to our public on the topic of ‘Making a Difference: Law, Politics, and Civil Engagement.’ The program will commence promptly at 3pm with Judge Aguirre speaking to the public and hosting a short question and answer session. Judge Aguirre has served as Superior Court Judge for the County of Orange since 2002. Following Judge Aguirre’s talk, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez will speak to the youth and the public about being proactive in your community. She will speak from 3:30 – 4:00 p.m. Sanchez has been a Congresswoman for California’s 47th Congressional District since 1997. Will Orange County Democrats run away from Obama in November?

Will Orange County’s Democratic candidates run away from the increasingly unpopular President Barack Obama in November? He is likely to win the State of California, but I can’t see him doing well in Orange County. Obama won U.S. Representative John Campbell’s district in 2008. That is highly unlikely to happen this November. In fact the only Congressional District that Obama might pick up is the one held by his fellow Democrat, Loretta Sanchez.

On the other hand, I expect Republican nominee Mitt Romney to come to Orange County perhaps more than once. He should be a boon to the local Republican candidates, with the exception of Jerry Hayden, who is running against Sanchez in the 47th Congressional District. That district’s Latino voters won’t likely be very impressed by Romney, who has been very harsh on immigrants during his campaign this year. Continue reading→

The Sanchez sisters don’t have much to worry about in November

U.S. Representative Linda Sanchez doesn’t have much to worry about in November, over in the 38th Congressional District.  She easily outpaced her two Republican opponents, Jorge Robles and Ben Campos, in this week’s Open Primary Election.  Campos is currently leading Robles by 532 votes, according to the California Secretary of State, for the right to face off against Sanchez in the fall.

Can Campos beat Sanchez?  Well, she has over 28,000 votes right now – and Campos and Robles together have under 23,000 votes.  Those are long odds for Campos.

Meanwhile, in Orange County, the other Congressional Sanchez, Loretta, has over 24,000 votes, in the 46th Congressional District, and she did not campaign at all – no signs, no mailers, and no robo calls. Continue reading→

California’s elected officials and political candidates are trying to figure out how to campaign in the new Open Primary Election that is set for June 5. Here in Orange County, one of our longtime U.S. Representatives, Loretta Sanchez, apparently decided to skip the primary election altogether.

You won’t find any Sanchez signs and I have seen no mailers and have not received any phone calls from her campaign. But her opponents are all running hard. Continue reading→
