Smash and grab robbers hit the Rolex store at South Coast Plaza tonight
The Rolex store at South Coast Plaza was burglarized tonight when at least one suspect smashed a glass case and stole several watches, according to the O.C. Register.
Shoppers reportedly panicked when the incident happened at 8:22 p.m., believing that shots had been fired. However the Costa Mesa Police investigated and determined that no shots were fired. Continue reading
A 96-foot Christmas tree at the South Coast Plaza was destroyed by a fire early today
The 96-foot Christmas tree worth $120,000 was destroyed Monday morning in a fire outside the Westin South Coast Plaza hotel, according to the O.C. Register.
Firefighters got a call at 6:34 a.m. that the tree, a 96-foot white fir from Mt. Shasta, was burning, Costa Mesa fire spokesman Capt. Chris Coates said, according to the L.A. Times. Continue reading
19-year-old man struck and killed while running across the 55 Freeway
A 16-year-old driver in a BMW ran into and injured a 19-year-old Costa Mesa man, Missael Espinoza, who was running across the southbound lanes of the 55 Freeway, near 19th Street, just after 10 pm. on Friday, according to the O.C. Register.
The driver, who has not been identified, also resides in Costa Mesa. He was driving a four-door 1998 BMW 328i, when the accident occurred. Continue reading

Komen Orange County® today unveiled key breast health findings from its 2015 Community Profile Report at its annual Grants Breakfast at Westin South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. A result of extensive research compiled by leading medical professionals over the course of the year, the report outlines the status of breast health and services in Orange County, and serves as a roadmap for future Komen Orange County initiatives. The first event in a two-part KomenUNITY series drew a crowd of nearly 300 community members and also awarded nearly $800,000 to 11 Orange County nonprofit and community-based organizations implementing culturally appropriate, comprehensive breast health programs in their communities.

Advisory: Latest AB109 Post-Release Community Supervision Compliance Sweep Nets 8 Arrests
On Tuesday, November 10th, 2015, the Costa Mesa Police Department partnered with the Orange County Probation Department in a collaborative effort to conduct compliance checks on offenders subject to Post-Release Community Supervision (PRCS) per Assembly Bill 109 (State Prison Realignment). These checks were designed to locate and audit the activity of local criminal offenders residing within Costa Mesa who are under the supervision of the Orange County Probation Department. 18-year-old motorcyclist in critical condition after crashing into two vehicles
An unidentified 18-year-old man crashed into two vehicles on Tuesday night at around 7:30 p.m. while he was speeding on a 2015 KTM Sport motorcycle, in Costa Mesa, just south of Paularino Elementary School, according to the O.C. Register.
The victim was driving westbound in the right-hand lane of Baker Street, approaching Coolidge Ave. Apparently he was driving too fast when he collided into a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe that was being driven by 81-year-old Costa Mesa resident Gertrude Hall. She was in front the of the motorcyclist, in the same lane, when she began to turn right on Coolidge Avenue. The motorcyclist was not expecting the turn by Hall and he ran right into the side of her SUV. Continue reading
L.A. County Sheriff’s deputy arrested for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in Costa Mesa
A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy, Jovanni Argueta, has been arrested for allegedly meeting a girl online when she was 12 and rendezvousing with her over the next year for sexual acts on and off the campus of her Costa Mesa middle school, according to the O.C. Weekly.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department said it assisted the Costa Mesa Police Department with the arrest of 26-year-old Argueta in Whittier on Wednesday, according to ABC News.
Argueta met the Costa Mesa Middle School girl, who is now 13, last year through an online fantasy computer game site. Argueta reportedly performed sexual acts on the girl, and met her numerous times on and off campus, according to the O.C. Register. Continue reading
DUI checkpoint set for Oct. 30 in Costa Mesa

The Costa Mesa Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday, October 30th at an undisclosed location within the city between the hours of 8 p.m. and 3 a.m.
The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely. Continue reading
Elderly Santa Ana man in critical condition after being struck by a van in Costa Mesa
An unidentified 81-year-old Santa Ana man was struck on Friday morning at 6:17 a.m., while crossing the right-hand northbound lane of Fairview Road, 50 yards south of Baker Street, in Costa Mesa, causing two lanes to be closed during the investigation, according to the O.C. Register.
The elderly victim was walking eastbound when Bao Hoai Duong, 52 of Garden Grove, who was driving a 2002 Dodge van northbound on Fairview Road, struck him. Continue reading

Costa Mesa, CA, October 14, 2015 – Vanguard University’s highly acclaimed and award-winning department of theatre arts presents Life Without Parole. The play, written by Warren J. Doody and directed by Susan K. Berkompas, is presented in the Lyceum Theater on the Vanguard University campus, beginning October 23, 2015 and running two weekends through November 1, 2015.
Dr. Elizabeth Dermody Leonard entered the gates of the California Institution for Women at Chino to interview forty-two women who were serving long-term sentences for killing their abusive partners. Ten years later, Warren Doody transformed this original research into the stage play, Life Without Parole, which tells the story of Helen Broker as she faces a Parole Board Hearing for the first time, and takes the audience on a journey through the tragic underworld of domestic violence. TWO MEN SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING THREE YOUNG BOYS
SANTA ANA, Calif. – Two men were sentenced today to life in state prison sexually assaulting three young boys. Jimmy Ernest Hutton, 27, Ooltewah, Tennessee, was found guilty by a jury on April 27, 2015, of five felony counts of lewd acts on a child under 14, one felony count of attempted lewd act upon a child under 14, and sentencing enhancement allegations for committing lewd acts upon multiple victims and substantial sexual conduct with a child. Hutton was sentenced today to 30 years to life in state prison and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration.
Dustin James Elwood, 24, Tustin, was found guilty by a jury on April 27, 2015, of 15 felony counts of lewd acts on a child under 14, one felony count of using a minor for sex acts, one felony count of possession and control of child pornography, and sentencing enhancement allegations for committing lewd acts upon multiple victims and substantial sexual conduct with a child. Elwood was sentenced today to 45 years to life in state prison and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration. Continue reading
