SAPD officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 600 Block North Rosita on Tuesday night at around 8 pm, according to a press release they issued. A male victim was located in the drive way of a residence deceased from a possible gun shot wound.
The victim was identified by SAPD homicide detectives on Wednesday, Feb. 19, as Michael Paul Stanton, a 31-year-old Santa Ana resident. Continue reading
A Santa Ana gas station clerk was beaten during a robbery two weeks ago, and police are seeking a second suspect. One suspect was arrested at the scene. Police are hoping surveillance pictures will lead to the capture of the second suspect and a getaway driver, according to KABC.
Marcos Soriano was working at the station’s AM/PM when two men came in about 5:20 a.m. and wanted to buy beer. It is illegal to sell alcohol between 2 and 6 a.m., so Soriano refused. Surveillance footage shows the clerk leading the men outside of the store, and the two suspects try to get back in. Moments later, the pair attacked Soriano, who was struck on the head and kicked in the ribs, according to NBC. Continue reading

Advisory: Homicide Detectives investigate shooting death
On 2-15-14, at approximately 2055 hours, a victim suffering from gunshot wounds was transported by a friend to a local hospital in the City of Santa Ana. The victim was pronounced deceased a short time later. The victim was 25-years-old and a Santa Ana resident. His name is not being released until family members have been notified. It is unknown where the shooting occurred. EIGHT MEN CONVICTED OF LOITERING OR AGREEING TO ENGAGE IN PROSTITUTION
SANTA ANA – The Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) convicted eight men of loitering and/or agreeing to engage in prostitution in January 2014. The defendants in these cases approached a woman, whom they believed to be a prostitute, in areas known for prostitution and human trafficking in Orange County. They agreed to engage in commercial sex or loitered with intent to commit prostitution to engage in prostitution with a woman or an undercover officer and were subsequently arrested by law enforcement.
Garden Grove Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Department, and Santa Ana Police Department investigated these cases. Deputy District Attorney Michael Bardeen of the HEAT Unit prosecuted these cases. Continue reading
The Memphis at the Santora partied one last time last night, as they are closing down. But the night ended ominously as a suspect pulled a knife on David Hastie, a partner at the Memphis, which is located in Downtown Santa Ana (DTSA).
David wrote about this on his Facebook page – see the comments in the pictures below. Apparently David manned up and took the knife away from the suspect. David called the SAPD and he is pressing charges against the miscreant. And good news – David wasn’t hurt although I am sure his nerves were frazzled. Continue reading

IRVINE, CA (February 13, 2014) Wednesday night, the Irvine Police Department received information that two 15-year-old girls were approached while walking home from school earlier in the day near West Yale Loop and Warner Avenue. The girls separated at approximately 3:20 p.m. as the first victim walked into her residential area. The suspect pulled up to the curb in a dark sedan and motioned for her to approach the car through his closed passenger window. The girl did not approach and continued into her home. Continue reading

PAROLE DENIED FOR INMATE CONVICTED OF KILLING 67-YEAR-OLD WOMAN IN 2000 DRIVE-BY SHOOTING
SANTA ANA – The Board of Parole Hearings, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, denied parole for a man convicted of killing a 67-year-old woman in a drive-by shooting in 2000. Carlos Eduardo Sanchez, 30, is currently being held at Calipatria State Prison, Calipatria. Sanchez was sentenced Sept. 20, 2002, to 15 years to life in state prison after he was found guilty of one felony count of second degree murder. The case was originally prosecuted by Senior Deputy District Attorney Sonia Balleste.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Rebecca Olivieri was present to oppose Sanchez’s parole. The inmate will be eligible for his next parole hearing in 2019. Continue reading

SANTA ANA – A man was convicted today of the double-murder of a Stanton sales associate and his longtime secretary. Hilbert Pineil Thomas, 42, Garden Grove, was found guilty by a jury of two felony counts of special circumstances murder for multiple murders, murder during the commission of robbery, and murder during the commission of burglary. BOARD MEMBER CHARGED WITH STEALING $750,000 IN LARGEST CHARTER SCHOOL THEFT IN CALIFORNIA HISTORY
SANTA ANA – A former board member for a charter school district has been charged with stealing $750,000 in the largest charter school theft in California history. Jeremy Landau, 43, Sherman Oaks, is charged with 13 felony counts of money laundering, two felony counts of misappropriation of public funds, and one felony count of conflict of interest in a sale and purchase, with sentencing enhancements and allegations for causing over $100,000 in loss, property loss over $200,000, and fraudulent transactions over $150,000. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 14 years and eight months in state prison. Landau is being held on $750,000 bail and must prove the money is from a legal and legitimate source before posting bond. He is expected to be arraigned Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana. Continue reading
A judge has ruled that two women will stand trial on murder charges in connection with the death of a 23-year-old woman left unconscious and fatally injured after a fight outside a Santa Ana nightclub, according to the O.C. Register.
A judge ruled there was enough evidence to try Vanesa Zavala and Candace Brito. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the death last month of Annie Hung Kim Pham, according to the S.F. Chronicle. Continue reading

SANTA ANA – Orange County District Attorney (OCDA) Tony Rackauckas is opposing the parole of a man convicted of murdering a 67-year-old Santa Ana woman in a drive-by shooting in 2000. Sanchez was sentenced Sept. 20, 2002, to 15 years to life in state prison after he was found guilty of one felony count of second degree murder. Candace Brito, 27, and Vanesa Zavala, 25, appeared at a preliminary hearing as Pham’s family member wore buttons with the victim’s likeness. Both women had pleaded not guilty to murder, according to KTLA. A judge will decide if there is enough evidence to send two women to trial on charges they stomped and kicked a 23-year-old woman to death in a fight outside a popular California nightclub.
Patricia Navarro, a veteran Santa Ana homicide detective, said a witness reported seeing Vanesa Tapia Zavala, 25, join in a fight that started with a verbal altercation. Zavala and Candace Marie Brito, 27, both office workers from Santa Ana, have pleaded not guilty to murder charges, according to the OC Register. Continue reading

SANTA ANA – A former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy was sentenced today for repeatedly assaulting a woman, with whom he had a relationship, after she discovered on Christmas Day that he was sexually involved with another woman. Mark Eric Hibner, 44, Anaheim, was found guilty by a jury, Oct. 22, 2013, of two felony counts of domestic battery with corporal injury and three felony counts of criminal threats. The People requested a state prison sentence, but Hibner was sentenced today to one year in jail and five years formal probation.
At the time of the crimes, Hibner was a 22-year deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He was involved in a romantic relationship with Jane Doe #1 for several years. Continue reading
