Gang member involved in deadly hit and run accident turns himself in

A documented gang member, Jorge Ocampo, 21, was being held Saturday in connection with a deadly hit-and-run car crash in Santa Ana. He turned himself in to authorities late Friday evening, according to KTLA.

Ocampo was booked on suspicion of two counts of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and being an unlicensed driver, according to the SAPD.  He was allegedly behind the wheel of a speeding black Audi that ran a stop sign and broadsided a blue Nissan making a left turn at the intersection of Cabrillo Park Drive and Fruit Street around 10:43 a.m. Friday, according to the Los Angeles Times. There were 30 crimes reported in Santa Ana on Thursday, August 22, 2013, by our friends at CrimeMapping.  The crimes included five Vehicle Thefts and four Thefts from Vehicles.  Beware – there appears to be a trend in town of criminals driving up by your car while you pump gas, and then sneaking open your passenger door and stealing your purse or briefcase, or computer bag.  This is happening a lot so lock your car when you are pumping your gas!

Updated: Gang banger on probation caused hit and run crash that killed 2 men

UPDATE: Police have identified the suspect wanted for a deadly hit-and-run crash as a documented gang member on probation, according to CBS News.  The driver was identified as 21-year-old Jorge Ocampo, a documented gang member who was on probation, according to ABC News.

Police are searching for a driver and his passenger after a hit-and-run crash that killed two other motorists Friday at a Santa Ana intersection, according to NBC News.

The crash happened just after 11 a.m. Friday at Cabrillo Park Drive and Fruit Street, across from the Matchpoint Tennis Academy at Cabrillo Park. Two men who were inside a black Audi sedan remain at large in the neighborhood, according to CBS News. Continue reading→

Summer / Labor Day Holiday “Avoid the 38” DUI Campaign – Monday Update

SANTA ANA, California – (August 19, 2013) – The Summer/Labor Day National Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from routine traffic enforcement and special “Avoid the 38” Task Force DUI deployments.

During the enforcement period of Friday, August 16, 2013 at 12:01 a.m. through Sunday August 18, 2013 at 11:59 a.m., officers representing 38 county law enforcement agencies have arrested 149 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  No DUI fatalities were reported.   In 2012, 153 DUI arrests occurred during the same three (3) day time period. Poll: Is it time to put video cameras on Santa Ana police officers?

When the City of Rialto put video cameras on their police officers formal complaints against the officers plunged 88% during the year and officer “use of force” incidents dropped by 59%, according to the New York Daily News.

Officers have the option of mounting the cameras – provided by Taser International – on a headset, and new technology will enable them to wear the equipment on a cap or sunglasses. And officers in the future will be able to write reports taken directly from the camera footage, which will include sound, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Continue reading→

Council Members MIA from yesterday’s Santa Ana Peace March

More than 100 people from about 25 churches and community organizations marched on Saturday morning in a quest for peace in Santa Ana’s neighborhoods, according to the O.C. Register.

What was missing from this Santa Ana Peace March?  Apparently none of the Santa Ana Council Members showed up.  Click here and see for yourself – the Register did not capture any Council Members in their photo coverage of this event.  And Pastor Ariel Meza, who coordinated this event, also did not mention the Council Members on his Facebook page, nor do they appear in the pictures that he took. MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER FACES TRIAL FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING 8TH GRADE STUDENT ON CAMPUS AND COMMITTING LEWD ACTS AGAINST TWO OTHER STUDENTS

SANTA ANA – A middle school math teacher faces trial Monday for sexually assaulting an 8th grade female student while alone with her on campus and committing lewd acts against two other female students. Richard John Rack, 51, San Clemente, is charged with six felony counts of lewd acts on a child age 14 or 15, one felony count of lewd or lascivious acts with a minor under 14, and one felony count of oral copulation of a minor under 16. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 12 years and eight months in state prison and mandatory lifetime sex offender registration. Opening statements are expected to begin Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, in Department C-27, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana. The time is to be determined. Continue reading→
