OCTA Scholarship Program Invests in Education
Employee-funded program awards more than $13,000 to 26 students
ORANGE – The Orange County Transportation Authority recently held its annual scholarship event, awarding $13,000 to students through a fund that is raised entirely from employee donations.
The OCTA Scholarship Fund provided 25 deserving students with awards of $500 to offset their college tuition and help advance their academic careers. Continue reading
Jose Perez won a Chevy Sonic
Saddleback High School student Jose Perez was the lucky winner yesterday of the SAUSD’s perfect attendance car giveaway, which took place at Bruce Hamlin’s Guaranty Chevrolet, located at 711 East 17th Street in Santa Ana. Perez won a 2017 Chevy Sonic.
There were 733 eligible high school students in the contest during which five names were drawn. Then the five students each picked one of five cars that they believed might be the winning vehicle. The student whose key was able to start the car won that vehicle – and that turned out to be Perez. Continue reading

One High School Student with Perfect Attendance Will Win a 2017 Chevy Sonic!
One lucky Santa Ana Unified School District high school student, who has had perfect attendance all year long, will be the winner of a brand new car as part of the Perfect Attendance Car Giveaway promotion courtesy of Bruce Hamlin, Owner of Guaranty Chevrolet, located at 711 East 17th Street in Santa Ana.
Every year, Hamlin hosts a celebration in the Guaranty Chevrolet showroom for nearly 733 eligible high school students. “The main reason we do this is to help the community. The more students that attend classes daily, the more educated the student becomes. Those are the people that become good citizens and therefore help the community. I feel it’s beholden on the businesses in each community to help keep our communities strong and safe.” said Hamlin. Continue reading
I wonder how the SAUSD’s PR staff will spin this one? Apparently 11 students at McFadden Intermediate School were rushed to a local hospital today after they were found to be under the influence of an unknown substance, according to the O.C. Register.
The SAUSD later admitted that the students had taken a prescription drug – Xanax, that one of the students brought to school. Xanax affects chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people with anxiety. Continue reading

SADDLEBACK STUDENT’S ARTWORK TO BE DISPLAYED IN U.S. CAPITOL
Linda Yanez, a photography student at Saddleback High School, has won First Place in the Congressional Photography contest sponsored by Congressman Lou Correa representing the 46th Congressional District. The award ceremony was held May 20, 2017 at the Cal State Fullerton Grand Central exhibition space on Second Street in Santa Ana.
Linda is a 10th grade student who created the work, “Barrio Logan: Remembering the Fallen.” The photograph depicts the commemorative community mural in the Logan neighborhood. Linda and her parents will be honored at the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington D.C. at a ceremony on June 29, 2017 and the work will be hung in a gallery/corridor setting in the Capitol Building along with student artwork from other U.S. Congressional Districts. Santa Ana Unified School District Celebrates 11.5% Gain In Graduation Rates, Surpassing Both State And Orange County Averages
The District is using unique methods – including online learning, evening school and more intervention services – to help students recoup lost credits
(May 10, 2017) – As the school year winds down, and students are working hard to finish their final projects and exams, the Santa Ana Unified School District is celebrating a significant increase of 11.5% in graduation rates over the last seven years.
The District, which serves approximately 53,000 students in grades K-12, has a 91.6% graduation rate, surpassing the state average of 83.2% and the county average of 90.8%. Continue reading

SANTA ANA, CA (May 1, 2017) – More than 300 intermediate students in the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) will compete and demonstrate their oratorical skills during the District’s Speech and Debate National Qualifying Championship tournament to be held this Saturday, May 6, 2017, from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Santa Ana High School, located at 520 West Walnut Street in Santa Ana.
“This is another example of the unique opportunities exclusive to Santa Ana Unified students. Our intermediate students are getting a jumpstart to speech and debate which is normally offered only at the high school level. Saddleback High School joins elite ranks of International Baccalaureate (IB) World Class schools
Rigorous program to help SAUSD close achievement gap with Latino and low-income students
(April 21, 2017) – Saddleback High School has been named an International Baccalaureate (IB) World Class school, a prestigious honor awarded to only select schools across the globe.
Beginning in the 2017-18 school year, Saddleback students will begin taking coursework that will result in the awarding of an IB Diploma upon graduation. With this diploma, students will be immediately recognized as having received a rigorous world-class education that has prepared them for the most competitive higher education institutions in the world. The Godinez High School boys’ varsity soccer team will be presented with the Army National Guard National Ranking Trophy as part of the 12th annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard. Godinez finished No. 3 in the final rankings and is one of 10 boys’ varsity soccer teams that are being honored on this season’s tour. The presentation will be made during a lunch assembly.
This event is set for Friday, April 21, 2017, at 12:15 p.m. at the Cafeteria at Godinez High School, located at 3002 Centennial Rd., in Santa Ana. Participating in the event will be Godinez H.S. Recalling the status quo in education

Teachers, administrators and parents were naturally upset when they took to the lectern at the Santa Ana Unified School District board meeting last Tuesday to address the issuing of pink slips to 287 employees.
Most of those pink slips went to educators, and a number of teachers who received the notices, or knew a teacher who received a notice, spoke of the good work they and their fellow educators are doing, and how harmful the cuts would be to their schools. But, somehow, the only board member who voted against issuing the pink slips also seemed to be receiving most of the blame. Continue reading
