SANTA ANA, CA – January 5, 2015 – Share Our Selves (SOS), a respected community health center and social services organization with a forty-five year history of serving the needs of the community, is pleased to announce the opening of the SOS Health Center at Samueli Academy in Santa Ana on Monday, January 4, 2016. Share Our Selves provides comprehensive care throughout Orange County, with centers conveniently located in Costa Mesa, Santa Ana, Lake Forest, and Newport Beach. Samueli Academy is an educational program of Orangewood Foundation that provides a transformational learning environment to educationally underserved communities. Samueli Academy offers consistency, stability, support, and a community in which to belong, thrive, and grow into successful, independent adults.
The beautiful new health center, located on the Samueli Academy campus at 1901 N. Fairview Street in Santa Ana, is staffed with bilingual providers, and is open to the students and families of Samueli Academy. Services offered include primary medical care for adults and children, sports physicals, and a direct link to the services available at the other SOS health centers, including pediatric and adult dental care, food and financial assistance, eligibility enrollment for insurance, and much more. The conversations she overhears in the lounge are surprising and sometimes shocking: teachers’ suspicions that the assistant principal is drinking on the job; woes in their romantic lives; and much more. When Rosie shares her teachers’ secrets with her new friend Dominique Nguyen, Dominique’s inability to keep a secret creates a complex blend of chaos and comedy.
Spy in the Teachers’ Lounge is the first novel by Santa Ana teacher and former journalist Béa Tomaselli Tiritilli. It was illustrated by Rialto artist Jessica O’Handley and recently released by ABM Publications of Orange. Continue reading

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A former office manager was convicted and sentenced today for embezzling money from a Catholic school’s fundraising program. Adela Maria Tapia, 40, Tustin, pleaded guilty to a court offer of two felony counts of grand theft by embezzlement, 13 felony counts of money laundering with sentencing enhancement allegations for aggravated white collar crime over $100,000, and property loss of over $200,000. Tapia was sentenced to four years and eight months in state prison stayed pending the completion of one year in jail and five years formal probation over an objection by the People, who argued for a state prison sentence without the possibility of probation. Tapia was also ordered to pay over $438,000 in restitution. Continue reading

The news that union organizers with the Orange County Labor Federation are working to deliberately misinform parents about the truth regarding California’s Parent Trigger law should come as no surprise. Those who support the concept of school choice and the supposedly “radical” idea that every California child deserves the best education we can give them have been fighting entrenched union interests since Governor Schwarzenegger signed the Open Enrollment Act into law.
The Open Enrollment Act was a cornerstone of President Obama’s ambitious “Race to the Top” education reform effort that swept the nation nearly eight years ago. The President’s goals for reforming our public education system, which former Senator Gloria Romero and I supported, was the implementation of educational policies like performance-based evaluations for teachers and principals, support for charter schools and turning low-performance schools into education powerhouses. On 12/12/15, the Santa Ana Police Department arrested Raul Martin, 59, of Santa Ana, for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl.
During the morning hours of 12/12/15, there was a gift / food give-a-way being held at Davis Elementary School, 1405 N. Spurgeon, Santa Ana. This give-a-way attracted a large crowd of families from the neighborhood. The parents of an 8-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy dropped their children off at Davis Elementary as they parked their vehicle. Continue reading

Legislation Modernizes and Protects Funding for Afterschool Programs that Benefit More Than 1 Million Children Each Year
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), the chair of the Senate Afterschool Caucus, today praised the final passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which included provisions to modernize afterschool programs nationwide and protects federal investments that help more than 1 million children attend these programs each year. The measure now goes to President Obama for his signature.

The Hope Alive Perfect Harmony Concert is set for November 15, 2015, at 6 pm, at the Bill Medley Auditorium, located at Santa Ana High School, at 520 W. Walnut St., in Santa Ana.
This event supports keeping music in the schools by raising funds for music education in Santa Ana. This benefit concert brings the diversity of our community together for an evening of music exploration around the globe as world-class musicians are paired with aspiring youth artists from diverse backgrounds.
Music students from Willard Intermediate, Santa High School, and the surrounding community will have the rare opportunity to perform on stage in a symphony led and directed by local conductors Ammy Beltran, Reggie Goodjoin, Lesa Terry, Joseph Kaye and Victor De Los Santos. This eclectic mix of conductors and music instructors with varying styles and backgrounds expose the youth artists to a variety of musical genres and cultures that they do not learn in their regular school music programs. SANTA ANA – Today, Career College of California has been designated a 2016 Military Friendly® School by Victory Media, the leader in successfully connecting the military and civilian worlds, and publisher of G.I. Jobs®, STEM Jobs SM and Military Spouse. The Military Friendly® Schools designation provides service members and their families with transparent, data driven ratings about post‐military education and career opportunities.
Institutions competed for the elite Military Friendly® School title by completing a survey of over 100 questions covering ten categories, including military support on campus, graduation and employment outcomes, and military spouse policies. Survey responses were scored against benchmarks across these key indicators of success. In addition, data was independently tested by EY (Ernst & Young) based upon the weightings and methodology established by Victory Media with guidance from an independent Advisory Board of higher education and recruiting professionals. Donations Will Assist Efforts to Provide College Students with Government and Leadership Experiences
(Santa Ana, CA) — At a regularly scheduled Board of Trustees meeting on October 26, the Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD) Foundation Board donated $10,000 to the Santa Ana College and Santiago Canyon College Associated Student Government organizations to help provide students on both campuses with important government and leadership opportunities.
“The Foundation is committed to our students and has repeatedly expressed its desire to ensure that they are the first to benefit financially from our upcoming education consulting endeavor across the globe,” said Rancho Santiago Community College District Foundation Board Member Arianna Barrios, who helped present the checks along with fellow Foundation Board member Nelida Yanez. “Since our first wave of project revenue is not anticipated to arrive until early next year, our partners at Chevron were gracious enough to assist us with this donation of funds. Jungwon Jin to Perform Mozart Piano Concerto
(Santa Ana, CA)— The Santa Ana College (SAC) Music Department is hosting “Jungwon Jin in Concert” on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Hall Theatre, 1530 W. 17th St., Santa Ana, CA, 92706. General admission is $15; staff and senior tickets are $12; students with ID tickets are $9.99; and tickets for children 5-14 are $5.00.
