SANTA ANA, Calif.,—Lyon Air Museum, a premier Southern California showcase for vintage military aircraft and automobiles, is scheduled to host dozens of rare Packard classic automobiles as part of “Cars & Cockpits Day,” scheduled for Sun., March 13, 2011, from 10 a.m. to noon at the facility, located on the west side of Orange County’s John Wayne Airport. (NOTE: Weather permitting.)

The classic Packard motor cars—many pre-WW II era—will be driven by members of the Packards International Car Club from across Southern California. Packard was an American luxury-type automobile built by the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit, Mich., and later by the Studebaker- Packard Corporation of South Bend, Ind. Packard automobiles were produced from the early 1900s through 1958.

“We’re eager to host this event because it enables visitors to view some of the rarest Packard marques and at the same time have an opportunity to experience the Museum,” said Mark Foster, president of Lyon Air Museum.

Scheduled to be on display will be the world’s only 1941 160 Packard Super 8 Rollson convertible limousine, once owned by the Rockefeller family.

The purpose of Packards International Motor Car Club is the preservation and promotion of all Packard automobiles and all material pertaining to them; to provide a point of exchange for information and material related to same; and to provide and promote events, tours, and exhibitions featuring Packard Motor Cars. The Southern California regional headquarters of the Packards International Car Club is housed at Custom Auto Service, 302 French Street, Santa Ana.

The 30,000-sq.ft. Lyon Air Museum opened in Dec. 2009. The facility represents the fulfillment of a dream of Maj. Gen. William Lyon, USAF (Ret), who held the position of Chief of the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1975 to 1979. Currently, Gen. Lyon is Chairman of the Board and CEO of William Lyon Homes, Inc., Newport Beach, Calif. His passion for aviation history and youth education is the driving force behind Lyon Air Museum. In establishing the Museum, Gen. Lyon sought to create a world-class facility that would be available to the local community and would offer educational exhibits designed to inspire young people. The Museum has on exhibit some of the world’s rarest operational aircraft and vehicles.

Region 18 Quarterly Meeting for California Democratic Party Delegates

The Region 18 Quarterly Meeting for California Democratic Party Delegates will take place on Saturday, March 12, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, at the Teamsters Local 952, located at 140 South Marks Way, in Orange.

Join Regional Director Steve Young for the quarterly regional meeting at the Teamsters Hall in Orange (right across the street from where the Democratic Party of Orange County Central Committee meetings are held). They will talk about the upcoming convention and answer questions for new delegates. Topics to be covered include: how to make the convention meaningful, how networking at the convention can improve the weekend, delegate responsibilities, and more.

40th Anniversary OC Human Relations Awards nominees announced

OC Human Relations is proud to announce the 40th Anniversary Human Relations Awards Honorees:

Lifetime Achievement Award: Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, for almost 100 years, the Sisters have demonstrated their compassion by serving the needs of the most vulnerable in our communities.

Civil Rights in History Award: Sandra Robbie, the writer/producer of the Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary Mendez vs. Westminster: For All the Children.

Community Leader Awards: Ralph Bauer, “The Father of Human Relations in Huntington Beach,” has dedicated his adult life to creating an environment where all have equal opportunities and are valued and treated with respect.

Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi has served for the past 30 years in Garden Grove as the Imam of the first and largest mosque in Orange County. He works to build understanding of the commonality that exists between all religions.

Felipe Heras is an advocate for families of children with disabilities. As a volunteer with the Orange County Children’s Therapeutic Art Center, Heras has become a role model and an outstanding leader.

For over 16 years Sundaram Rama has given underprivileged, at-risk youth a chance to complete their education and become productive adults through his service to refugee and immigrant communities.

Dr. Thomas Parham has worked for civil rights for over 26 years. Through 100 Black Men, the Oden Commission, Christ Our Redeemer AME Church and more he has left a legacy of social advocacy and community improvement.

Before retiring, Rabbi Allen Krause of Temple Beth El co-founded the South County Interfaith Clergy, held interfaith dialogues and lead an interfaith volunteer expedition to Mexico.

Distinguished School Awards: Los Amigos High School (GGUSD) for their campaign, “Educate to Empower,” which promotes the idea that education should encourage students to be “teachers” who can help educate their peers.

Newport Harbor High School (NMUSD) for its efforts to end the toxic language that fills so many high school campuses via their campaign “That’s W.H.A.C.K.” (Words Hurt And Can Kill).

Community-Policing Award: The Tustin Police Department’s “Project Alliance,” is a successful partnership between law enforcement, the City and community organizations to reduce crime and increase the livability of Tustin’s Alliance Avenue neighborhood.

Getting Familiar with Food

Lecture and film series explores our connections to food

IRVINE – A new health and wellness education series at the Great Park may give you something to think about the next time you pick up “food” at the grocery store. “Food for Thought,” a lecture and film series that focuses on our culture and the food we eat, begins with a lecture on March 10, featuring nationally-recognized food expert and author Mark Winne. He will speak about Reclaiming Our Connection to Food: Embracing Food Problems in a Day of New Solutions.

The lecture and film series are presented as part of the Great Park’s health and wellness initiative that includes the Farm & Food Lab, Garden Workshops, Farmers Market and other programs providing innovative and interactive learning and resources.

“At the Great Park, we want to explore health from a global, community, and personal level and encourage communities to support healthy lifestyles,” said Beth Krom, Chair, Orange County Great Park Board Corporation. “Good food and good health go hand in hand.”

The free lecture begins at 7:30, and Winne will sign copies of his book, Food Rebels, Guerrilla Gardeners, and Smart-Cookin’ Mamas. The “Food for Thought” film series will present three award-winning documentaries King Corn (April 21), Food, Inc. (May 19) and Dirt! (June 9).

Each night you can bring a picnic to enjoy on the lawn or buy dinner from a selection of gourmet food trucks beginning at 6:30 p.m. Seating will be provided for the lecture, and visitors should bring blankets or beach chairs to sit on the lawn for the outdoor movies and dress for cool evening weather. About the Great Park

The Orange County Great Park, with its 1,347-acre master plan, is the focal point of the redevelopment of the publicly-owned portion of the 4,700-acre former Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro. The Great Park is currently 27.5 acres and includes an iconic tethered helium balloon that rises 400 feet in the air, providing an aerial view of Park development. A $70 million development plan to expand the Park to more than 200 acres is currently underway. The plan will build out a core section of the Park for the most immediate and wide-ranging public benefit, including the initial components of the sports park, a 114-acre agricultural area, and an art and culture exhibition space. The Assistance League of Santa Ana is presenting the children of Santa Ana schools with an Art Celebration….all schools, public and private will participate and many Orange County arts leaders are contributing time and talent to this event.

The event will benefit the Assistance Leagues community programs.

Friday night there will be a Gala Gallery Opening starting at 7:00 with food, beverages and entertainment. Saturday is Family Day with an Art Gallery featuring student art from all across Santa Ana, mini-Art Lessons, food and beverages and an awards presentation.

SANTA ANA, Calif., February 25, 2011—Lyon Air Museum, a premier Southern California showcase for vintage military aircraft and automobiles, is scheduled to host dozens of rare BMW sports cars as part of “Cars & Cockpits Day,” scheduled for Sun., March 6, 2011, from 10 a.m. to noon at the facility, located at John Wayne Airport in Orange County. (NOTE: Weather permitting—rain would cause cancellation of the event.)

The classic BMW vehicles will be driven by owners from across Southern California, including Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Bernardino counties. One enthusiast is even flying in from Vancouver, British Columbia. Also participating will be rare cars from the collection of Santa Ana dealership Crevier BMW, as well as two new special BMW preview models. Crevier BMW is the nation’s top seller of BMWs by volume. Gourmet food trucks will also be stationed at the Museum ready to serve hot refreshments.

“This special event has a definite excitement factor because it presents Museum visitors with an exceptional opportunity to view some of the rarest BMW cars, like the early coupes,” said Mark Foster, president of Lyon Air Museum.

One such vehicle is a two-door, six-cylinder 1969 E9 2800CS model owned by Murray Fowler, 82, of Costa Mesa, Calif. The car (license plate “BLUMAX”) has the unique distinction of being the highest mileage BMW of its type in the world with 417,000 miles on the odometer.

“I bought BLUMAX from the original owner thirty-nine years ago and, except for the wheels, most of the parts are original,” said Fowler. “Technically, my E9 is un-restored while remaining in very fine show condition.”

According to Fowler, BLUMAX is the 16th E-9 from among a total of 3,721 built on order from Hoffman Motors for the North American market. The E9 platform was very successful in racing and helped to establish BMW’s status as a sport driver’s car.

BLUMAX was delivered to its original owner—a young U.S. Army officer from San Marino, Calif. stationed in Germany—at the Munich factory on October 1, 1969. Since Fowler took ownership, the coupe (which he also used as his primary business car in Orange County for a few years) has travelled across the U.S. Canada and Mexico numerous times. He estimates that he has driven more than 500,000 miles in the BLUMAX and similar autos. Fowler and BLUMAX are featured in a video produced by BMW (and available on YouTube) that is part of a series called “Unscripted” in which everyday owners talk about their life and passion with BMW vehicles.
