Public Encouraged to Attend Unveiling Reception for OC Crime Victims’ Memorial Finalist Designs on Wednesday

The public is invited to the unveiling reception for the five finalists for the design of the Orange County Crime Victims’ Memorial. The unveiling will show design documents in plan and elevation view and logo designs for the five finalists for the first time. The unveiling reception will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Old Orange County Courthouse, 211 W. Santa Ana Blvd., Santa Ana.

“I thank the designers from around the world for their interest in the Crime Victims’ Memorial,” Supervisor Todd Spitzer said. “This will be a chance for the public to view each proposed design up close, and I urge all Orange County residents to attend this important event. Continue reading→

SANTA ANA, CA (February 4, 2014) – The public is invited to a Bicycle Safety Forum at the City of Santa Ana’s Main Library on Saturday, February 22nd, 2014 from 3 to 5 p.m. The purpose of this forum is to provide the community with the opportunity to focus on the safety challenges that exist when you bike in Santa Ana. Participants of all ages are welcome, and are not limited to only bicyclists.

The community will have the opportunity to participate in a survey, and join different feedback focus stations to provide ideas and suggestions that will be used to help in the development of a bicycle safety program for the community. Continue reading→

AT&T Teams with Roadtrip Nation to Empower students AT-RIsk and connect them with a brighter future

Roadtrip Nation takes its inspirational program and iconic green RV to Lorin Griset Academy Tuesday to celebrate a $1.5 million contribution from AT&T, part of AT&T Aspire, their $350 million commitment to education. The contribution enables Roadtrip Nation to engage over 15K students nationally during the 2014-2015 school year.

As part of the curriculum, Roadtrip Nation sends students out on their own personal “Roadtrip” to interview local leaders who share their interests; President of AT&T California, Ken McNeely, will be among the local leaders profiled by the students at Tuesday’s assembly. Continue reading→

Vista del Rio helps to fulfill the need for affordable, supportive housing for adults who are developmentally and physically disabled

SANTA ANA, CA (February 21, 2014) – It is the beginning of a new era of affordable housing for the permanently disabled in Orange County. On Monday, February 24th, Vista del Rio, a supportive housing community designed for developmentally and physically disabled adults, will officially celebrate its grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony. This development is the result of a partnership forged between the City of Santa Ana, former Redevelopment Agency, Santa Ana Housing Authority and three affordable housing developers – A Community of Friends, Foundation for Affordable Housing, and AMCAL Multi-Housing, Inc.—as well as two service providers—Community Housing Resources, Inc. and the Regional Center of Orange County, to create affordable and supportive housing for residents in Orange County with permanent disabilities. One night only! Join our 50 Mile Ride for Rwanda fans on Monday Feb 24 at the exclusive OC premier of “Rising from Ashes”, an inspiring true story about the rise of the Rwandan National Cycling Team. The film will be presented at the historic West Coast Theater in old town Santa Ana (near the Civic Center). Doors open at 6:30pm and the screening starts at 7:00pm. After the film you’ll get to meet the filmmakers as well as Team Rwanda member Rafiki Uwimana (the one with the infectious smile and the boundless enthusiasm for life).

“Rising from Ashes” is a feature length documentary about two worlds colliding when cycling legend Jock Boyer moves to Rwanda to help a group of struggling genocide survivors pursue their dream of a national team. As they set out against impossible odds both Jock and the team find new purpose as they rise from the ashes of their past. El Centro Cultural de Mexico to host a Day Laborer Victory Party on Feb. 22

The victory of day laborers in Costa Mesa will be honored at El Centro Cultural de Mexico on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 5 to 9 pm. They are located at 313 N. Birch Street in Downtown Santa Ana.

The City of Costa Mesa passed a law prohibiting the solicitation of work (10-354) in Dec. of 2005. Day laborers continued to resist the ordinance by congregating at Corners of Resistance, and people from the Tonantzin Collective monitored police behavior at the corners. This policy was combined with an agreement to have immigration officers in the Costa Mesa Police Station. In Sept. of 2009, 12 day laborers were picked up by undercover Costa Mesa police disguised as employers. All 12 were arrested and booked for the “crime” of looking for work. All 12 of them were later turned over to ICE custody and deported since they were undocumented. Continue reading→

Author Grace Flores-Hughes to Speak and Sign Her Book “A Tale of Survival: Memoir of an Hispanic Woman” at Librería Martínez de Chapman University, Tuesday, February 18

Author Grace Flores-Hughes will appear in person to talk about and sign her book “A Tale of Survival: Memoir of an Hispanic Woman” at Librería Martínez de Chapman University on Tuesday, February 18 at 7 p.m. In the presentation and in her book, Flores-Hughes tells her own story — of a Mexican-American girl growing up in south Texas during the ‘50s and ‘60s and the challenges she faced on a daily basis just to survive.

Frida Cinema to open on Feb. 21 with a South East European Film Festival

Frida Cinema, Santa Ana’s own community arthouse cinema, dedicated to enriching, connecting, and educating communities through the art of cinema, is opening this month. Frida is located at 305 East Fourth St. in Downtown Santa Ana’s East End, which used to be referred to as Calle Cuatro.

The Frida Cinema has chosen to open their theater with one of the most celebrated Southern California foreign film festivals – the South East European Film Festival.
