Mayor Miguel Pulido will recognize Father Jerome T. Karcher and Larry Haynes from Mercy House for their outstanding service to the City of Santa Ana at Tuesday’s City Council Meeting

With its headquarters in Santa Ana, Mercy House provides housing and comprehensive supportive services for a variety of homeless populations which includes families, adult men and women, mothers and their children, persons living with HIV/AIDS, individuals overcoming substance addictions, and some who are physically and mentally disabled. This year, Mercy House served close to 5,000 homeless individuals in their emergency services programs and prevented or ended homelessness for over 800 individuals. Continue reading→

Toy drive for needy kids set for Dec. 20 at Jerome Park

A holiday toy drive in the barrio will be hosted by Unidos Para Ti and the OC Lowrider Alliance at Jerome Park on Sunday, Dec. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will include a free concert and a toy giveaway as well as a car show. If you are interested in entering your car there is a fee of $15 plus one unwrapped toy. You may enter a bike for $10 plus an unwrapped toy. Continue reading→

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, preparations are in place for Operation Warm Wishes’ “7th Annual Unity in the Community Thanksgiving Spectacular.” The free yearly event which runs from 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day at Peppertree Park at 230 W. Coffee with SAPD cops set for Nov. 18 at the MainPlace Mall

The SAPD is hosting a Coffee with A Cop event on Nov. 18, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the MainPlace Mall, located at 2800 N. Main St. I would imagine that this will be in the mall’s food court.

The Hope Alive Perfect Harmony Concert is set for November 15, 2015, at 6 pm, at the Bill Medley Auditorium, located at Santa Ana High School, at 520 W. Walnut St., in Santa Ana.

This event supports keeping music in the schools by raising funds for music education in Santa Ana. This benefit concert brings the diversity of our community together for an evening of music exploration around the globe as world-class musicians are paired with aspiring youth artists from diverse backgrounds.

Music students from Willard Intermediate, Santa High School, and the surrounding community will have the rare opportunity to perform on stage in a symphony led and directed by local conductors Ammy Beltran, Reggie Goodjoin, Lesa Terry, Joseph Kaye and Victor De Los Santos. This eclectic mix of conductors and music instructors with varying styles and backgrounds expose the youth artists to a variety of musical genres and cultures that they do not learn in their regular school music programs. Special OC Board of Supervisors meeting on proposed homeless shelter site set for 11/17

The Orange County Board of Supervisors are hosting a Special Meeting regarding the proposed Orange County homeless shelter at the Kraemer site in Anaheim on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at 11 a.m., to consider finalizing purchase of a site at 1000 N. Kraemer Place in Anaheim for use as multi-service facility to serve the homeless.

If you plan on attending this meeting plan to arrive by 9 a.m. Entrance to the Board Hearing Room will be restricted once all of the seats are filled. Anyone leaving the building after the meeting starts will not be allowed back in. Continue reading→

Second Annual Open Street Event – Ciclovia in Santa Ana: Celebrating the Day of the Dead

The City of Santa Ana is proud to host its second annual Ciclovia – an open streets event where the streets will be closed to cars and opened to bikers, walkers and runners. SOMOS or “Sunday On Main Open Streets” is scheduled for Sunday, November 8, 2015 from 9 am to 2 pm.

In celebration of Día de los Muertos, the event will feature decorations associated with this annual cultural festivity. The public is encouraged to come dressed in the spirit of the Day of the Dead celebration and decorate their bikes, skateboards or strollers! Share with the community that you honor the spirits and value alternative, safe and fun transportation by participating in this automobile-free event. Rally in support of the proposed Anaheim homeless shelter set for 11/17 in Santa Ana

A rally will be taking place in Santa Ana on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, at 9 a.m., at the Orange County Hall of Administration, located at Building 19 at the Santa Ana Civic Center, in support of the proposed homeless shelter at Kraemer Place, in Anaheim.

The residents that live in the areas surrounding the location of the proposed homeless shelter have thus far shown up in great numbers to voice their opposition to the location of the shelter at several forums held over the past few months. Continue reading→

El Centro Cultural de Mexico is hosting their annual Noche de Altares (Day of the Dead) event on Saturday, November 7 , from 1:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at 4th and Birch Streets, in Santa Ana.

Since 2002, El Centro Cultural de Mexico has been organizing Noche de Altares, or a Night of Altars, a community based Día de los Muertos celebration, where families, students, community organization and businesses come together to create an authentic cultural experience that reflects Mexican tradition and what makes up our communities today. Organized by volunteers, the purpose of the celebration is to honor the ancient traditions of the festival and bring community members together through art, culture, and compassion. Community Alert: City of Santa Ana to Host Economic Development Strategic Plan Forums

The City of Santa Ana will be hosting three community forums in November to garner feedback on a new Economic Development Strategic Plan. Local residents and businesses are invited to share their thoughts on the City’s plan for economic development and to learn about how economic development affects jobs, public safety, roads, business growth, educational opportunities and shopping choices.

The firm helping to create the Economic Development Plan, RSG, will be presenting data gathered on different metrics such as employment, education, real estate lease/sales rates, property turnover and business performance during the forums. RSG will field questions, ask questions and invite feedback. Additionally, there will be interactive stations at the events for input, and a survey that can be taken onsite or online. Jungwon Jin to Perform Mozart Piano Concerto

(Santa Ana, CA)— The Santa Ana College (SAC) Music Department is hosting “Jungwon Jin in Concert” on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Hall Theatre, 1530 W. 17th St., Santa Ana, CA, 92706. General admission is $15; staff and senior tickets are $12; students with ID tickets are $9.99; and tickets for children 5-14 are $5.00. VIP reserved tickets are $50.00 ($15 ticket and $35 donation to SAC Friends of Music). Tickets may be purchased online at sac.edu/music.

The concert will spotlight Dr. Jungwon Jin, SAC assistant professor of music and world-recognized pianist along with Bich-Van, Vietnamese-American singer-actress-songwriter; Bonita Nahoum Jaros, mezzo-soprano and SAC coordinator of institutional effectiveness and assessment; Dr. Elliott Jones, director of choral music at SAC, and the SAC Chamber Choir; Dr. Brian Kehlenbach, chair of the college’s music department, composer, classical recitalist and jazz pianist; and Melody Versoza, SAC vocal instructor.
