Bolivian Consul Marco Antonio Valverde Carrasco was at the Santa Ana City Council meeting last night to invite the public to join Bolivian stars Carla Ortiz and Bernardo Peña in person for a special OC Film Fiesta fundraiser screening of OLVIDADOS (FORGOTTEN), Bolivia’s official entry to the Oscars, this Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Frida Cinema, located at 305 E. 4th St. on Santa Ana’s historic Calle Cuatro. This special OC Premiere screening will be the film’s only showing in Orange County! This special screening will be preceded by a 6pm VIP reception and followed by a special Q&A by Bolivian star Carla Ortiz and Bernardo Peña.

Multi Ariel Award-winner Mexican filmmaker Carlos Bolado (Tlatelolco; Colosio: The Assassination) directs an international cast featuring Carla Ortiz (Los Andes No Creen en Dios), Damian Alcazar (El Infierno), Rafael Ferro (Guapas), Bernardo Peña (Cielito Lindo) and Tomás Fonzi (Botineras) in this important film about the CIA-backed Operation Condor, which resulted in the abduction, torture and execution of countless men and women in Latin America in the 1970s. OC Parks is pleased to present the annual Halloween Zoo-tacular at the OC Zoo located inside Irvine Regional Park on Saturday, October 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Families are invited to partake in a fun-filled spooky day of activities with the animals of the OC Zoo.

At Halloween Zoo-tacular, guests ages 12 and under will trick-or-treat through the zoo and take part in a spooky scavenger hunt. Kids of all ages can create Halloween and fall-themed crafts and enjoy games and a photo/selfie spot with fun props. The OC Zoo animals will participate in the fun and receive treat-filled pumpkins and special Halloween goodies throughout the day. Fairhaven’s annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) event, on Monday, November 2 at 6 p.m., keeps century-old tradition alive by combining ceremony and a celebration of life to commemorate lost loved ones.

Santa Ana College Hosts Soldiers to Scholars Wine Tasting on November 5

Fundraiser Provides Services for Student Veterans

(Santa Ana, CA)— Stacy Palencia isn’t your average community college student.

At 29, she’s older than many of her classmates and her life experience is quite different. While many of them were attending high school, she was serving in the U.S. Navy in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. While at sea, she helped supply munitions for airborne missions. After returning to the U.S., she served shore duty for two years in Nevada and returned home to Orange County in 2012 with a back injury.

Now, in her second year at Santa Ana College (SAC), Palencia has worked hard to transition from active military service to civilian life. But, fortunately, she hasn’t had to make that transition alone. She said, “The SAC Veterans Resource Center (VRC) has been very helpful. It offers me and other veterans a quiet place to study, computers and printers to use, a book and graphic calculator loan program, academic counselling, help with financial aid and much, much more.” Continue reading→

The City of Santa Ana will be holding its Third Annual Plaza Navideña event on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at the Downtown Plaza Calle Cuatro on the corner of Fourth and French Streets. The event will take place from 5:00pm-8:00pm and will feature the Santa Ana’s Best Tamale contest. All licensed restaurants located within the city are invited to compete!

To participate, download the application at http://santa-ana.org/parks/upcomingevents/default.asp. Fill out the application and email it to Patty Lopez at plopez@santa-ana.org or hand-deliver it to the Santa Ana Public Library, attention Patty Lopez. Applications will be accepted from Monday, October 12, 2015 through Tuesday, November 13, 2015. The tamale tasting will take place during the Plaza Navideña event on Saturday, December 12, 2015 where the Winner and Honorable Mentions will be selected.

Parent rally at the SAUSD School District HQ set for Oct. 13

A group of parents is staging a rally at the SAUSD School Board meeting on Oct. 13, 2015, at 5 pm, at 1601 East Chestnut Ave., in Santa Ana.

These parents appear to be blaming the teachers for the district’s woes. However some of their goals are laudatory. They are calling for more tutoring, after-school programs and sports.

The crux of the argument against the teachers appears to be the money generated by Prop. 30, which is referred to as the Local Control Funding Formula. The teachers want a raise but these parents are clamoring for the money to be spent “in the classroom.” Continue reading→

HERITAGE MUSEUM CREATES TWO DAYS OF LIVING HISTORY AT 2nd ANNUAL CIVIL WAR DAYS ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17 AND SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18, 10 A.M.

The Orange County Heritage Museum will host its 2nd Annual Civil War Days on Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 2015, 10 a.m. each day. Civil War Days is an event that will bring to life one of the most important and pivotal time periods of United States History.

Civil War Days will be fun for both young and old! Guests will be able to interact with Union and Confederate Troops encamped at the museum for the weekend. The troops will provide firing demonstrations for visitors, an artillery weapons display, and a civilian camp, and children’s crafts and activities. The Cottonwood String Band will provide entertainment while teaching Civil War dance lessons to guests. Stop and enjoy our Blacksmiths working the iron forges and take a walk through our 4 acres of natural area. The Wooden Floor’s 2014 Auditions

The Wooden Floor, an arts-based youth development nonprofit, is hoping for a large turnout of low-income, primarily Latino families, on Saturday, October 17, 2015, as it opens its doors for its Annual Auditions Day. In order to reach the students who need The Wooden Floor’s services the most, word is spread throughout the community about the opportunity to join The Wooden Floor.

A privately-funded nonprofit organization, The Wooden Floor uses a successful model of strategically-integrating intensive dance education with academic programs, college and career readiness programs, and family support services to help students change the way they think about themselves and aspire beyond the grip of the poverty cycle. Since 2005, 100 percent of The Wooden Floor’s graduates have finished high school on time and immediately enrolled in college-something done by only about 45 percent of their socioeconomic peers. Fitness and Safety Promoted at Walk-to-School Day – October 7, 2015

Join the Santa Ana Unified School District, the Orange County Health Care Agency, the Santa Ana School Police and Santa Ana Police Department as they participate in the Annual International Walk to School Day. Students, parents, and community members will take part in this global event to bring awareness to the importance of practicing safe walking, biking, and traffic skills. In addition, participants will review ways to maintain secure routes before, during and after school hours throughout the city of Santa Ana, while promoting physical activity.

Walk to School day will be held throughout the city of Santa Ana; however, a program acknowledging participation throughout the school district will be held at Romero Cruz Elementary School at 8:15 a.m. Students, parents, staff, and friends will walk from surrounding neighborhoods between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. which is a perfect opportunity to capture video, photographs and interviews.
