Free Italy Family Festival at the Bowers Museum set for this Sunday

The Bowers Museum is hosting a “Celebrate Italy Festival: on Sunday, October 4, 2015, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. This is a free Community Event sponsored by The Nicholas Endowment and presented by the Bowers Italian Cultural Arts Council.

The CSUF Grand Central Art Center is hosting a video screening of Future Perfect: Time Capsules in Reagan Country (40 min, 2015), a film by Daniel Tucker, on Sep. 24, 2015, at 7 pm.

Developed during a 2014 residency at the CSUF Grand Central Art Center, this new video chronicles the story of 3 time capsules related to Ronald Reagan in southern California. Ten years after his death and 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and Ronald Reagan’s departure from the office of the President of the United States, this work grows out of an interest in the continued echoes of a speech delivered by Reagan following the end of his Governorship in California on August 19th, 1976 at the Republican National Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. In this speech Reagan talks of the difficulty he found in writing a letter for a time capsule to be sealed in Los Angeles and opened one hundred years in the future. Departing from this moment “Future Perfect” explores Reagan’s future-oriented science fiction imagination and rhetoric through visits to Reagan-inspired monuments and time capsules throughout California. Community: PUBLIC INVITED TO MONTHLY FLAG RAISING CEREMONY HONORING OUR VETERANS THIS THURSDAY

In honor of the remarkable contributions that veterans have made to our country, the American Legion Post 131 and students from Heroes Elementary will be hosting a monthly flag raising ceremony, tomorrow Thursday, September 17 at 7:45 am.

The ceremony will last approximately 15-20 minutes and will honor veterans each third Thursday of the month. The flag raising ceremony will take place in front of the Santa Ana Public Library, at the flag pole located near the corner of Ross and Civic Center Drive. Get a $5 Habit Burger Grill combo and help feed needy kids on 9/18 at the O.C. Register

On Sept. 18, 2015 a food truck operated by Irvine-based Habit Burger Grill will be offering a $5 meal special to benefit the nonprofit Share Our Strength. The Habit Truck will set up in the visitor parking lot of The Orange County Register from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. serving $5 combo meals that include a charburger with cheese, fries and a drink. Other entree options will include a gluten-free lettuce wrap and veggie burger, according to the O.C. Register.

Habit officials said 100 percent of all funds will go to Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign, a nationwide effort to wipe out childhood hunger in the United States by educating families on how to cook healthy, affordable meals at home. Continue reading→

Watch our goofy elected officials in today’s Fiestas Patrias parade in DTSA

I try not to miss the annual Fiestas Patrias parade in Downtown Santa Ana not because it is a great parade but rather because it always presents me with the opportunity to take goofy pictures of our local politicians.

A couple years ago I caught career politician Janet Nguyen (who at the time was a Supervisor and is now a State Senator) dangling her unsecured toddler while sitting on the back seat of a convertible car (see the picture above). If only I had been taking video! She was screaming “Viva Mexico” at the time. (I am sure her fellow Republicans would love to see that video today!). Continue reading→

Kermes fundraiser to help pay for a young woman’s funeral set for 9/12 at Centennial Park

Gennieve Marie Rankin, 25-years-old, passed away last Friday in a tragic car accident. She leaves behind her husband, Santiago “El Chago” Duran and a 4-year-old daughter and funeral bills that her family cannot contend with by themselves.

Her family is hosting a Kermes this Saturday, September 12, 2015, at Centennial Park in Santa Ana, located at 3000 W. Edinger Ave., starting at 10 a.m., to raise funds to help pay for her funeral.

Community Alert: BIG FIESTA IN DOWNTOWN SANTA ANA / FIESTA GRANDE EN EL CENTRO DE SANTA ANA

The 37th annual Fiestas Patrias event will take place on Saturday and Sunday September 12 and 13 in the City of Santa Ana’s historic downtown. The street fair is on 4th street between French and Sycamore and is filled with food booths, great cultural merchandise, arts and culture booths, and a large main stage showcasing over fifteen performances.

The headliner for the main stage on Saturday at 8 PM is Maribel Guardia and for Sunday at 7 PM is Fidel Rueda. Ms. Guardia is a singer, dancer and a well-known T.V and Film actors. Mr. Rueda increased his popularity with the release of the very popular disc entailed Paz en Este Amor, which landed his music on the Billboard charts in both the Regional Mexican Airplay and Hot Latin Tracks categories.
